Snapshot of My Day, Edition #14, 7/10/2025

I got the idea for this type of "snapshot" post from Stephany Writes who got it from To Love and To Learn. I'm a straight-up copycat of the format.

It's been more than a year since I did one of these! Stephany recently did one and it inspired me.

Time I woke up: 5:30am with the alarm.

First thing I did upon waking: I read some of The Chosen by Chaim Potok (look, maybe this is a  brilliant book, but it started with an interminably long scene of a youth baseball game, so it has my hackles up). I then went downstairs, brushed the cat for my usual forty-five seconds, and took the dog for a walk.

Today's weather: Perfect summer day. It was in the 60s when I walked the dog this morning and the highs got into the low 80s. I could not have asked for anything more.

She is gorgeous, right? Even if she will never look at the camera.

An out-of-the-ordinary thing that happened today: The parking lot where I normally park at work is closed for repair work, so I had to park on the street.

Last thing I read (not on the Internet): That book from this morning.

Last thing I read (on the Internet): This article about a new study that shows dietary education in the United States is abysmal, but I guess we already knew that.

Last text I received: Wednesday was the last time I received a text. LOL. It was from my doctor's office reminding me to check in before my appointment on Friday morning.

Last text I sent: Lol. Do we need more eggs? - I sent this to Dr. BB on Wednesday when he said that he boiled five eggs for Hannah and only two of them survived the process.

Last website I visited: Chewy. I had to adjust the date of the next autoship of Zelda's food.

Deluxe lunch today. We had leftover soup and my delicious green bean salad. I'll be over here waxing poetic about soup and salad as an awesome lunch options, thanks.

Last show I watched: I watched series 19, episode 10 (the grand final!) of Taskmaster last night with Dr. BB. I'm sad that there won't be new TM shows for me to watch until the fall. (If you still haven't watched Taskmaster, I feel like I am not doing my job here.)

Last podcast I listened to: Look, it was the "Can't Stop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers episode of 60 Songs That Explain the '90s: The 2000s. New fact: Flea was not born with the name Flea. His birth name is Michael Peter Balzary. I mean, can you imagine either calling Flea Michael OR choosing to go by the name Flea. (Also, I have to admit that I do not have the fondness for Nirvana or Hole that Rob has. I find the elegiac nature of the first part of this episode to be off-putting. Kurt Cobain may have been a tortured artist and his death was sad, but I was a teen in the '90s and it certainly didn't ruin my year, you know?) (Is it okay to put to parentheses together? Oh, well. Also, I do not know this RHCP song, but I enjoyed the episode anyway.)

Last thing I said: Katie's birthday is Sunday. The card won't get there on time, but we'll send one anyway.

Last thing I ate: Some curried chickpeas and rice for dinner.

Queen. I wish I could sleep as much as she does.

What I was doing an hour ago: Eating dinner.

What I will be doing an hour from now: Taking a shower, hopefully.

Current whereabouts of the other members of the household: Dr. BB is reading on the couch, Hannah's in her bed in the room with him, and Zelda is sitting on the floor next to me under a dining room chair.

One thing I crossed off my to-do list today: I emailed back a faculty member about a question they asked earlier in the week after doing some research. (If anyone cares, my boss is willing to override the last fifteen credit residency requirement, as long as the student meets all the other residency requirements. However, the registrar's office will not allow a student to apply for graduation or release their official transcripts with a financial hold. You're welcome for this delightfully particular and niche information.)

Can you spy the kitty?

Do students at your school have to spend their final semester on campus- is that the residency requirement? And at most schools, a financial hold is a road block for most things, unfortunately.
My last text was Here! To let me eldest know we pulled into the hotel to meet her. Family reunion time!
    Such lovely pets!

    1. The residency rules at our school are:
      1) Must have taken at least 30 credits here
      2) Complete at least 25% of their major (and minor if they have one) here
      3) Must take the last 15 credits here

Generally any one of them can be waived, but not more than one. They don't have to live on campus which is probably what you think of when you think of "residency," but this is more policy on where they've taken credits.

    1. Thanks! The dining room is one of my favorite rooms in the house. It makes it appear as if someone who has an eye for home decorating has been here.

  3. Oooh I have that 60s songs episode downloaded, and I'm planning to listen sometime this weekend!
Last text I sent or received? How about the one I just thought of sending which is "Rex barfed in his crate." That's what I woke up to this morning, so right now I can hear the washing machine going. What the what, Rex. Ah well, I know you can relate to dog-related grossness. Non-dog related text I received was from my son, who came for dinner last night, and simply says "sounds good." Last text I sent was to my friend Sandi who asked how my day was going.

    1. Yep, you're talking to friends who know all about dog-related grossness and early morning laundry. We see you! Feel better Rex!

    2. Oh, no! I hate to hear that Rex isn't feeling well. Poor guy. I hope he just ate a weird plant or something.

You will obviously love that 60 Songs ep because Rob is amazing. Or at least, I think Rob is amazing. (HI ROB!)

  4. Keep me posted on The Chosen. Nom on the curried chickpeas, and note to self that I want some soon.

My most recent text was from Hubs. He gave me the deets that I need to know about a contractor coming to the house, and I replied "cool".

    1. See, that would get a thumbs up emoji from me, which is probably the text message I send/receive the most. No words needed.

  5. Yes, Hannah is gorgeous! So is Zelda, obviously. Last I sent was to my daughter last night (yes, we do text each other even though we're in the same house) telling her I wanted to clean out the guinea pig cage. My life is exciting!

    1. Zelda and Hannah thank you for their compliments. I tell them they're pretty every day, but it's not for them to hear it from other people occasionally.

  6. Maybe it's how you take your selfies, but are you like, super tall?? The last text I got was an emoji of a chick and a sunflower.

    1. Well, I have not traditionally thought of myself as tall, but among the bloggers I've met, I sometimes do feel like a giant. I am almost 5' 7". It's slightly taller than average, but not tall enough to garner me the ability to reach the top shelf in our kitchen cupboards.

  7. I've never tried anything like this. It seems above my pay grade! Love Hannah and her attitude. Kitty is under table in the shadows?

    1. This is super easy! Not above your pay grade. You just have to remember to take a few photos during the day. Yes, Zelda is under the chair closest to the camera - I think she's hiding from the dog.

  8. To be fair youth baseball games ARE interminable...

    1. And that scene was interminable, so at least the author got that right.

  9. Zelda and Hannah are both gorgeous. Love seeing them on your blog. You are also gorgeous and that dress is so cute!

Have you ever given boiled eggs to Zelda? I was talking to a gal at PetCo about cat food, she has three cats and she was touting the magic of eggs for cats. I haven't tried it yet, though.

Baseball is bad enough to watch, I don't know that I could read about it.

    1. Zelda is extremely food motivated. If we give her people food, she will then beg for it FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. So we have not given her eggs because that it is a dog treat. I bet it does amazing things for her coat, though.

I read the baseball scene, friend. It felt like 100 pages, but I'm sure it was more like 10. I'll have to look at that when I write up the book (if I ever finish the book).

  11. I love this! Gorgeous dress, gorgeous dog and cat, gorgeous green bean salad! My last text was to my husband: My watch beeped at me and told me it was time to stand up!
(I just got a refurbished Apple Watch so I can track all the sleeping stats with my BiPAP machine.)

    1. One of the reasons I don't have a smart watch is because I think I would get unhealthily obsessed with stats. I hope you have good results with the BiPAP machine!

  12. I have NOT even heard of the Taskmaster show. Translation: I guess you are NOT doing your job.

The last text I sent was HOPE YOU SEE THIS.

I washed the teams’ basketball uniforms at our hotel in Louisville last night. A few girls took their time getting me their stuff and we had a team dinner- grilling out at the hotel. I was enjoying my social time and failed to put stuff in the dryer until almost 11. I texted a mom letting her know her daughter’s uniform was outside her door.

  13. Hi, I love your dresses, they always make me feel like I should try harder to wear them. The last text I received was from my oldest: "I’m on my way to lollapalooza🎉" . To which I only let myself reply "Love you!🥰" It is a fingernail biting Saturday :-).

    1. If dresses aren't your jam, that's fine. I just can't stand how constricted I feel with pants! I admire the effortless look of capris and a lovely top, but it's too much for me. I hope Lollapalooza went well!

  14. I so deeply enjoyed this series of Taskmaster (the cast chemistry, the tasks, the whole thing) and I feel such a loss not having it to look forward to at the end of the week. The last text I received was from my Mr and it was just a whole bunch of swears because I had told him our daughter hadn’t pushed the Britta back into the fridge when she closed the door and now all of the side shelves were submerged (an ongoing drama in our house).

    1. I don't know if I thought this was as strong a cast as some others I've seen, but it is a stand out in recent seasons. I might start watching Australia and see how that goes. I've never been a NZ fan because Jeremy Well is anti-charisma.

This Brita drama sounds intense. I would be so unhappy if there was water everywhere in the fridge!

  15. Okay, I tried to watch Taskmaster on the plane back from our trip. I really really tried, completely for your sake. I sat on the plane looking at my options and saw Taskmaster and thought, "ooooh! Engie!" But there was so much chatter in the first five minutes that I had to turn it off.... it was like being the not cool person at a party of cool people and not knowing anything they were talking about. Maybe I should have fast forwarded through that bit, but it's really hard to do that on an airplane screen. (I watched Derry Girls instead, which I found hilarious and delightful.)
The last text I sent was a picture of the dog we are dog sitting. My 5 year old has surrounded the dog bed with Barbies and crayons so that Max won't get bored.

    1. Huh. I feel like if you start at series 2, episode 1 and it's not for you after 15-20 minutes, then it's not a show for you. But at least you gave it a shot! Derry Girls is delightful, but I don't think it holds a candle next to TM.

I sent the fam a picture of a monarch butterfly :)

    1. The church behind us has a monarch garden, but I've never seen a monarch there. My husband recently saw one there when he was walking Hannah and we were both excited for the church people who maintain the garden. Meanwhile, our yard has lots of milkweed through sheer neglect and we saw at least a couple every day.

  17. I enjoyed The Chosen, and I'm pretty sure there are no more baseball scenes. We have an Australian Taskmaster (there's been three seasons) and my girls love it so we usually watch with them. Maybe you should see if you check it out if you're missing Taskmaster before your new season begins.

Last text I received was this morning from G, sending me a link to a 5K training plan. Last text I sent was Friday and was a reply to a mum requesting information about our mainly music program.

  18. Do you listen to every episode of the 60 Songs podcast? I skip maybe 25% if the song just doesn't appeal to me, but Rob is so damn entertaining, I bet I'd enjoy those anyway. Even his tangents are fun. I may go back and listen to the ones I skipped at some point.

Last text was from my daughter last night, sharing how her 4th of July went and asking about mine.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, I have to admit that I don't listen to most of Rob's interviews about songs because either he's a terrible interviewer or his guests are boring or dull (I can't really tell), so the episodes end for me after he stops reading his scripted stuff. I do listen to all of them, though, even when I don't know the song, which is actually a fair number of them. I feel like there have been very few unlistenable episodes or episodes in which I really didn't know what was going on because I was so removed from the song. But, yeah, I do listen to every one of them.

      Delete
    2. Ahh, gotcha! It would be easier to catch up on them all if I did that, I suppose, but mostly I like his interviews. Some guests are obviously more entertaining than others.

  19. Zelda is beautiful--a true Sleeping Beauty. If you slept as much as she does, you'd be narcoleptic, and under a doctor's care.

Listen, youth baseball is interminable and horrid. I used to fill my water bottle with beer and sit behind the outfield just to survive it. I was so glad when my kids asked me if they could stop playing because they really didn't enjoy it. Ecstatic, really.

The last text I sent was to my DIL to tell her what all she and Jared left behind at the lakehouse.

    1. The scene was SO LONG and SO BORING and I don't care about adult baseball and then to add youth baseball into the mix...that was not the best way to start the book, you know?

You're a nice host to let people know what was left behind!

  20. I found Zelda!

Every time someone that's not you mentions Taskmaster, I think of you! I really need to watch some episodes already.

The last text I received was from my brother who responded "Whoo hoo" when I told him there are only 7 Sundays to go before football season. (I know, I know.)
