2025 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge Results

I have been plugging away at the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge all year. Here are the results. It was not as successful as it has been in previous years, but at least I read some interesting books.

Results from previous years:

1. A book about a POC experience joy and not trauma

What You Are Looking For Is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama (translated by Alison Watts) - Cozy slightly magical book about a librarian who knows just how to help people with their biggest challenges. It read like a series of interconnected short stories. It was a bit too self-help-y for me, but it was a gentle, kind read. 4/5 stars

2. A book you want to read based on the last sentence

The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer - Sort of a problematic book, but it's very readable. 3/5 stars

3. A book about space tourism

Floating Hotel by Grace Curtis - Not exactly what I suspected. It was a fun cozy book and then suddenly there was a dead body? 3/5 stars

4. A book with two or more books on the cover or "book" in the title

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman - I stand by my review. #ninaisaterribleperson 2/5 stars

5. A book with a snake on the cover or in the title

The Last Magician (The Last Magician #1) by Lisa Maxwell - So much promise. The most meh of books. 3/5 stars

6. A book that fills your favorite prompts from the 2015 PSRC - 2015 was before my time, so I had to look these up!

I think I'll probably do a book with more than 500 pages:

Here Be Dragons (Welsh Princes #1) by Sharon Kay Penman - Historical soap operas are my catnip. 4.5/5 stars

7. A book about a cult

The Girls by Emma Cline - DNF in January

I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman  - Beautiful little book. 4.5/5 stars

8. A book under 250 pages

Dear Fahrenheit 541 by Annie Spence - I enjoyed spending time with Annie as she talked to her books. 4/5 stars

The City in Glass by Nghi Vo - DNF May

9. A book that features a character going through menopause

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg - DNF July

How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley - DNF

The New Moon's Arms by Nalo Hopkinson - DNF May

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans - Basically a perfect book if you ask me. 5/5 stars

10. A book you got for free

The Bee Sting by Paul Murphy (recommended by Maya, J, and Nance) - Slow start, but then I was really invested. J gave me an audiobook copy, so I got it for free! 4/5 stars

11. A book mentioned in another book

Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters - Mentioned in How to Read a Book. It was worth a read! 4/5 stars

12. A book about a road trip

Planes, Trains, and All the Feels by Livy Hart - Unremarkable romance, but this couple is never going to make it. 3/5 stars

13. A book rated less than three stars on Goodreads

14. A book about a nontraditional education

Truly, Devious (Truly Devious #1) by Maureen Johnson - This was legitimately a terrible book. 2/5 stars

The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams - DNF January

15. A book that an AI chatbot recommends based on your favorite book

When I asked ChatGPT to recommend books based on my love of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, it recommended:

The Chosen by Chaim Potok - Nothing happened in this book. 3/5 stars

16. A book set in or around a body of water

The Most by Jessica Anthony - Marriage in peril and the wife won't get out of the pool. The ending ruined what could have been a promising novel. 3/5 stars

The Wedding People by Alison Espach - DNF

17. A book about a running club

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami - Oddly enough, I could have used less talk about running or being thin. 3/5 stars

18. A book containing magical creatures that aren't dragons

I read Alberich's Tale in the Valdemar saga - lots of Companions in that series.

Exile's Valor - 3.5/5 stars

19. A highly anticipated read of 2025

Sunrise on the Reaping (Hunger Games #0.5) by Suzanne Collins - Nice bit of fan service if you're interested in Haymitch's story. 4/5 stars

Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green - Super interesting topic. I wish another author had written it. 3/5 stars

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry - I did not care for the subplot of the old lady recounting her life, but the romance was pretty fun. 3.5/5 stars

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid - DNF September

20. A book that fills a 2024 prompts you'd like to do over (or try again)

I'd like to do a book by a blind or visually impaired author over again - I didn't get a great book last time

Feed by Mira Grant - The main character has issues with her eyes because of the zombie virus. Also, I loved this book. Bloggers! Zombies! 5/5 stars

21. A book where the main character is a politician - Well, you can't say I didn't try with this one.

Infomocracy (The Centenal Cycle #1) by Malka Ann Older - DNF July

Never by Ken Follett - DNF in April

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin - DNF November

22. A book about soccer

The Long Game (Green Oak #1) by Elena Armas - Slow burn romance. Fine if you like that sort of thing. 3/5 stars

23. A book that is considered healing fiction

How to Read a Book by Monica Wood - I really liked this one. 5/5 stars

24. A book with a happily single woman protagonist

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo - Too many POVs for me. 3/5 stars

25. A book where the main characters is an immigrant or refugee

Real Americans by Rachel Khong - Long, but good. I did not find it memorable, though, because as I went to write this blurb a couple of months later, I couldn't remember much about this book. 4/5 stars

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng - For Pete's sake, this book was a snooze. 2.5/5 stars

The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri - DNF May

26. A book when an adult character changes careers

Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer - Girl stumbles into a job with the bad guy. Fine read. 3/5 stars

27. A book set at a luxury resort

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie - The writing is subpar, the characterizations nonexistent, and the ending was exasperating. 2/5 stars

28. A book that features an unlikely friendship

News of the World by Paulette Jiles - A perfect book for this prompt. I loved Captain and Johanna together. I actually bought this book for my 16-year-old nephew as a present for Christmas. 4/5 stars

29. A book about a food truck

The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen  - I read this. It's not about a food truck. The Truth About Forever is the one that features a food truck. Grr. 3/5 stars

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen - This one isn't about a food truck, either! The main character works for a catering company and there's a catering truck, but it's not really the same thing. It's better than the other Dessen book, though. 4/5 stars

30. A book that reminds you of your childhood

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White - This audiobook is read by E.B. White himself and is sheer perfection. What a fantastic book. 5/5 stars

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (on hold at library) - Still a lovely story of self-discovery and found family. 4/5 stars

31. A book where music plays an integral part of the storyline

A Visit from the Goon Squad (Goon Squad #1) by Jennifer Egan - DNF July

August Lane by Regina Black - If you like your romances with a bit of a deeper message, this might be for you. It was not for me. 3/5 stars

32. A book about an overlooked woman in history

Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait?: Alice Paul, Woodrow Wilson, and the Fight for the Right to Vote by Tina Cassidy - YES!! This book. Maybe I wouldn't want to be friends with Alice Paul, but I was so happy to read all about her fight for women's suffrage. I liked how it was framed with Paul and Wilson as big players. This made me feel better about our current political landscape. 5/5 stars

33. A book featuring an activity on your bucket list - My bucket list item is to eventually have more than half my wardrobe be clothing I have made with my own two hands, so I looked at books with seamstresses in them. I just didn't get around to reading any of them.

34. A book written by an author who is neurodivergent

Mislaid in Parts Half-Known (Wayward Children #9) by Seanan McGuire (also could be for a book under 250 pages) - Not the best in the series, but I read it! 3/5 stars

35. A book centering LGBTQ+ characters that isn't about coming out

Space Opera (Space Opera #1) by Catherynne M. Valente - On my reading spreadsheet (borrowed from Stephany), I put a no in column labeled LGBTQ+. I mean, I guess maybe? The thing is that both of the main male characters were in relationships with women. Maybe they were bi? Who knows? I'm counting it.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea (Cerulean Sea #2) by TJ Klune - This fits the prompt much more directly. 3/5 stars

36. A book with silver on the cover or in the title

The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls - I wanted more. 3/5 stars

37 & 38. Two books with the same title

This just didn't happen this year.

39. A classic you've never read

Moby-Dick by Herman Melville - I DID IT!!! 4/5 stars

40. A book about chosen family

Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews - So much fun! 4/5 stars

41. A book by the oldest author in your TBR pile

I don't even know how I would go about finding this out. A bunch of authors I read are dead - does that count?

42. A book with a left-handed character

Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah - Hmm...is there a left-handed character here? I don't know. I read it, though. I think I missed the point of this book. 2/5 stars

43.  A book where nature is the antagonist

The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff - Servant girl runs into the woods during the "starving time" in the Jamestown colony. Despair and loneliness follow. 3.5/5 stars

44. A book that features a married couple who don't live together

Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northrup - This is an interesting slave narrative, but I sort of wanted it to be more? 3.5/5 stars

45. A book with a title that starts with the letter Y

Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks - The writing was great, but maybe I'll never really be ready for a book about the plague. 3/5 stars

46. A book that includes a nonverbal character

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (reread for me) - I think Just Listen handles these themes better, but both books have their place in YA books about rape. 3.5/5 stars

47. A book you have always avoided reading

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell - Easily my most favorite book I read in 2025. 5/5 stars

48.  A dystopian book with a happy ending

I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself by Marisa Crane - Look, was this really a happy ending? I don't know about that. 3/5 stars

49. A book that features a character with chronic pain

False Witness by Karin Slaughter - This was a good thriller, fast-paced. But I think it was a bit too much for the likes of me. 4/5 stars

50. A book of interconnected short stories

Blackout by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon - I listened to this one and it got me really pumped up for summer. 4.5/5 stars

Completed prompts: 44/50
Average star rating: 3.53/5 stars

One thing I really like about this challenge is that I do read outside of my normal tendency. Look at me reading contemporary fiction, poetry, and mystery! Sure, much of it is romance and fantasy/sci-fi, but I like that I branch out a bit, too.

Did you do a reading challenge this year? How did it go? If not, would you ever take on something like this?

November 2025 Accountability Buddy

In light of last month's breakdown, I really cut myself slack this month. My stats for this year are not going to be great, but at least I'm still out there doing something most of the time.

****************

Saturday, November 1
More dealing with my mother's belongings. What a hassle.

Sunday, November 2
Drove most of the day, so this was  day off.

Monday, November 3
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Tuesday, November 4
45-minute body blast class at the community center after work

Wednesday, November 5
30-minute gentle yoga after dinner - I almost always work out before dinner, but I was wiped today. But my stats are terrible this year, so I decided that if the most I could was yoga, that was going to have to do for the day.

Thursday, November 6
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Friday, November 7 - Sunday, November 9
Days off

Monday, November 10
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Tuesday, November 11
45-minute fitness class at the community center - This was a bad idea. We did these relays in teams and the faster you did the activities, the less time your teammates were in a wall sit. Well, this meant that low-impact options were not really an option, you know? My leg was pounding at the halfway mark and I'm pretty sure tomorrow I'm going to be in big trouble.

Wednesday, November 12
Day off

Thursday, November 13
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Friday, November 14
Day off

Saturday, November 15
Hour of yardwork. We bent, we weeded, we used the machete. We bagged, we raked. We took half a dozen trips to the compost pile.

Sunday, November 16
I know this doesn't seem like a workout, but I cleaned out both our cars. This was SO HARD and SO PHYSICAL. Vacuuming, cramming your body into tight spaces, and reaching to get into crevices of windows. I was exhausted.

Monday, November 17
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Tuesday, November 18
45-minute fitness class at the community center - It was cold and rainy and I may have hummed a few bars of this. I did NOT want to go after my miserable time last week, but I went and it was fun and I was in a much better mood afterwards than I was walking in. I would still like some bonus life points for showing up on a day like that.

Wednesday, November 19
15-minute stretch class at lunchtime*
25-minute walking workout
5-minute arm workout with dumbbells

Thursday, November 20
15-minute chair stretch class with my first year seminar - I led this chair stretch it was hysterical how many groans were coming from these 18- and 19-year olds, particularly during the seated twist and figure four.
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Friday, November 21
Day off

Saturday, November 22

Sunday, November 23
40-minute functional full body strength training
10-minute full body yoga stretch

Monday, November 24
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Tuesday, November 25
45-minute fitness class at the community center

Wednesday, November 26
60-minute restorative yoga - May not be for everyone. Easy poses held for 6-8 minutes. Definitely not great if you're in your head about something!
10-minute energy boost yoga stretch - I needed something to get me back up after that other practice.

Thursday, November 27
30-minute total body circuit workout
15-minute post workout stretch

Friday, November 28
Yard work! So much yard work! We're supposed to get a winter storm, so this was our last chance to deal with leaves and the like.

Saturday, November 29
40-minutes of shoveling!

Sunday, November 30
30-minutes of shoveling!
30-minute tabata HIIT
25-minute yoga for flexibility- I needed this after all the shoveling!

15-minute daily yoga stretch - What an interesting video. The instructor says nothing and transitions between poses are indicated by a bell. I kind of liked it.

Monday, October 20
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime - The person who runs this wasn't there and no one else was, either, but the room was reserved, so I just did it by myself.

Monday, October 27
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime. - Just me and one other person. It is confirmed that the yoga lady is on vacation.

Tuesday, October 28
45-minute body blast at the community center after work - I've been on hiatus dealing with my leg, but my leg is never going to get better, so I'm back at it.

If your friends agree to do a foot selfie, take them up on it.

Wednesday, October 29
Day off

Thursday, October 30
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

That's too much yoga, but I'm going to take it. My stats for this year are decimated. Oh, well. I'll keep on keeping on, even though the perfectionist in me wants to say fuck it and stop working out this year because I'll never meet my goals.

September 2025 Books

9/1: Floating Hotel by Grace Curtis (library ebook, 2024)- You're reading a cozy science fiction book about how a hotel operating in deep space might operate and suddenly you're in a spy thriller with a dead body? I was unprepared for the whiplash. 3/5 stars

9/2: Beneath the Scars (Masters of the Shadowlands #12) by Cherise Sinclair (ebook I own, 2018) - I couldn't figure out the password to the wifi at my father-in-law's house and this was literally the only book I had downloaded on my Kindle (note to self: put some other books on there). I like Sinclair and I like this erotica series. I think the main characters in this book are both zzzzzz, but you do get some of the other characters from Shadowlands and that's fun. 3.5/5 stars

9/5: Sunrise on the Reaping (Hunger Games #0.5) by Suzanne Collins (library, 2025)  - A lovely bit of fan service. 4/5 stars

9/14: Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles Book 1) by Ilona Andrews (library ebook, 2013) - Did you know Ilona Andrews is a husband/wife team and she's from the Soviet Union and he's from Florida? That's not relevant, but I want to know how it works. ANYWAY. Good book. Magic and a dog. I liked it. 4/5 stars

9/17: How To Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Understanding Literature, From The Great Gatsby to The Hate U Give (library, 2003, this third edition is 2024) - Very helpful guide for doing a close reading of literature. 4.5/5 stars

9/19: The Correspondent by Virginia Evans (library, 2025) - I ate up this epistolary novel. LOVED IT. Grumpy old woman writes letters. What could be more perfect than that? 5/5 stars

9/25: Let's Make a Scene (Theo & Cynthie #2) by Laura Wood (library, 2025) - Lovely romance novel. 4/5 stars

9/25: Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher (library, 2025) - T. Kingfisher never lets me down. 4/5 stars

9/27: I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak (library ebook, 2002) - I read this book in 2017 and wrote the following: I finished this book weeks ago, but I had to sit on it to think about it. I think, as a good friend of mine would say, this author takes himself a little too seriously. I loved The Book Thief and will definitely read more Zusak, but the ending of this book was a ham-fisted and unnecessary attempt at a sermon. No need to get preachy on us, Zusak, we understand that you are the omnipotent author.

But the characters were divine. The scene at the beginning with the bank robbery was hilarious. I just wish the last 15 pages were different.

I think I stand by this review. The beginning was great, the end was preachy. I gave it 4/5 stars back then, but it's 3/5 for me now.

9/30: Mislaid in Parts Half-Known (Wayward Children #9) by Seanan McGuire (library audiobook, 2024) - I think I've come to the end with this series. It's up and down and the best books are really good, but nothing is coming close to those first two books. The worldbuilding is cool (even here we get scary birds and dinosaurs), but it's not enough to make up for shallowness of this book.  3/5 stars

Total books: 10 books
Average star rating: 3.8/5 stars

DNF:

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Consider these paragraphs from the first page of this book:

Her job today is one of her favorite parts of being an astronaut. She is CAPCOM on the Orion Flight team for STS-LR9, the third flight of the shuttle Navigator.

The role of CAPCOM - the only person in Mission Control who speaks directly to the crew on the shuttle - is one of many that astronauts fill when they aren't on a mission.

This is something Joan often has to explain to people at the rare party she agrees to go to. That astronauts train to go up into space,  yes. But they also help design the tools and experiments, test out food, prep the shuttle, educate students on what NASA can do, advocate for space travel in Washington, talk to the press, and more. It's an exhausting list. (page 3)

Is it unfair to say that this is somehow all telling and now showing (wouldn't it be better to just drop us into a cocktail party where she's explaining this? or just drop her into a scene where she's doing her work as CAPCOM?) and yet also not explaining well? I don't know. I read until page 29 when I just realized that this book was going to annoy the fuck out of me.

****************

Have you DNFed a very popular book recently? I feel like between this and Margo's Got Money Troubles, I am soon to be expelled from the reading world.

August 2025 Accountability Buddy

I have debated what to do with the first part of the month. I'm honestly just going to pretend that the first ten days aren't there. In times of stress, working out is the first thing to go in my world. I absolutely replace it with sleep.

*****************

Monday, August 11
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime

Tuesday, August 12

August 2025 Books

Let's all just remember that August started off terribly and is ending terribly, too. Things have to look better in September.

8/10: Girl in the Mirror by Mary Alice Munroe (library ebook, 1998) - Do you ever read something hoping it will somehow get better in the next chapter? This one never did. I read this book because I thought it fulfilled a Pop Sugar challenge prompt, but I JUST REALIZED IT WAS BY A DIFFERENT AUTHOR. I'm a failure. 2.5/5 stars

8/17: Feed (Newsflesh #1) by Mira Grant - Blogging plus a zombie apocalypse? I'm in. 5/5 stars

8/17: Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng - Well, at least I can say I read it. 2.5/5 stars

8/18: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie - Look, this may be sacrilege, but the writing is subpar, the characterizations nonexistent, and the ending just pissed me off. 2/5 stars

8/25: Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters - Good stuff. I like the premise and the execution was fun. 4/5 stars

Total: 5 books
Average star rating: 3.2/5 stars - Thank goodness for Feed, right?

*****************

Did Not Finish:

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam - I read about half this book and nothing had happened yet. Honestly. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Ghosts of the Tsunami by Richard Lloyd Parry - I tried to listen to this as an audiobook and it failed to grab my attention. Maybe I'll try it later in print. DNF at 8%.

A Marriage at Sea by Sophie Elmhirst - Tried this as an audiobook and I just couldn't do it. The narrator's voice was not my favorite. DNF at 8%, but I will get this as a physical book and read it later.

What's the last book you DNFed? Why did you stop reading it?

July 2025 Books

7/2: Kate & Frida: A Novel of Friendship, Food, and Books by Kim Fay (library, 2025) - Cozy book. I mean, one of the characters is in the middle of a war zone for some of the book and I'm still calling it a cozy book. 4.5/5 stars

7/6: Bonded in Death (In Death #60) by JD Robb (library ebook, 2025) - Why am I still reading these books? This was sort of boring and I'm over Robb trying to mine the pasts of Roarke and Summerset. The 4.62/5 stars on Goodreads is wildly out of pocket. When will I stop reading these less than mediocre books? 2/5 stars

7/12: Heartwood by Amity Gaige (library, 2025) - Character driven mystery about a hiker lost in the woods. Unputdownable. 4.5/5 stars

7/17: All Fours by Miranda July (library, 2024) - National Book Award Finalist or not, this was not a book for the likes of me. 2.5/5 stars

7/17: The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean (library ebook, 2024) - Delightful book I started and finished on a plane. I doubt I'll remember this book in six months, but I enjoyed my time with it.  4/5 stars

7/19: The Chosen (Reuven Malther #1) by Chaim Potok (library ebook, 1966) - Coming of age book about two Jewish boys in Williamsburg in the 1940s, complete with lots of daddy issues. I'm sure that this book has its lovers, but nothing happened in this book outside of a very long youth baseball scene. If you are into character-driven novels, this might be for you, but it was not for me. (I will say that the Nazi stuff, treatment of Jewish people, religious differences, etc. does hit a particular chord in 2025.) 3/5 stars

7/22: An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser (library ebook, 1925) - Weird book. Is it a coming of age story? A story about toxic masculinity? True crime? Who knows? 3/5 stars

7/27: The Compound by Aisling Rawle (library, 2025) - Reality show book in a dystopian future. It's catnip for me, people. 4/5 stars

7/29: Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks (library, 2001) - The writing was great. The way Brooks weaves historical details in is amazing. But I did not want to read this book about a plague. 3/5 stars

Total: 9 books
Average star rating: 3.39/5 stars

DNF:

A Visit from the Goon Squad (Goon Squad #1) by Jennifer Egan - The first scene was all about a woman getting drunk, shoplifting, and making poor choices. I don't need that in my life. This reminds me why I stopped reading it when it was first published.

Infomocracy (The Centenal Cycle #1) by Malka Ann Older - I do not care for spy books AND I don't think I'm smart enough for this book.

The Good House by Ann Leary - According to Libby, I listened to 69% of the audiobook! I have absolutely no memories of this at all. I'm pretty sure it was during one of my interminable and endless drives to and from Michigan. Maybe someday I'll come back to it.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg - I really hate being preached at. DNF at 7% and have no regrets.

June 2025 Accountability Buddy

Sunday, June 1
Day off

Monday, June 2
30-minute Werq (dance) class after work - I hadn't worked out since Thursday and I had done very little movement over the weekend outside of some light stretching before bed. I was *shocked Pikachu face* at how much better my bad leg felt during this workout. There are some moves that I just automatically modify because I know my leg can't handle it, but here I was doing them. I wonder if I'm actually not giving my leg enough rest. It's an interesting question. I have a doctor's appointment next week to discuss if my leg is what it is and I need to suck it up or if there's something that can be done.

Sunday, June 22
Day off

Monday, June 23
30-minute yoga in the student union during lunchtime
30-minute Werq (dance) class after work

June 2025 Book List

What an excellent reading month for me. Woot woot! Four five-star books!

6/4: The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley (library, 2024) - IRL book club choice. I loved it. 5/5 stars

6/8: How To Read a Book by Monica Wood (library, 2024) - What a sweet book. Maybe too saccharine for some readers, but I liked it. 5/5 stars

6/13: The Favorites by Layne Fargo (library, 2025) - Yes! I'm all in. A sports book that's really a soap opera. 5/5 stars

6/17: Night Film by Marisha Plessl (library, 2013) - So engrossing. 5/5 stars

6/22: What Feasts at Night (Sworn Soldier #2) by T. Kingfisher (library, 2024) - Kingfisher really is a gem in the modern fantasy landscape. 4/5 stars

6/22: Seraphina (Seraphina #1) by Rachel Hartman (library ebook, 2012) - Dragons and humans have had a truce for many years, but that peace is in peril now. Seraphina understands both sides since she is the daughter of a human man and dragon woman. I thought this was a fun premise, but the execution was a bit sluggish. 3/5 stars

6/22: Dungeon Crawler Carl (Dungeon Crawler Carl #1) by Matt Dinniman (audiobook I purchased narrated by Jeff Hays, 2020) - This was our book club book. I will write more after book club meets, but that won't be until August, so I mostly liked this although it took me a bit to get into it. 4/5 stars

6/28: The Most by Jessica Anthony (library, 2024) - Disaffected housewife in the 1950s. Where else have I seen this before? 3/5 stars

Total: 8 books (I mean, two of those were novellas, but that's how it goes, right)
Average star rating: 4.25/5 stars

DNF

Too Like the Lightning (Terra Ignota #1) - I'm 30% through this book and I have no idea what's going on. Sometimes you just have to give up. I'm not smart enough for this book.

****************

Have you ever read four five-star books in a row? Do you think they're really great books or that I'm just an easy grader?

From the workout class at the community center. We went up and down the stairs over and over again. I know for a fact that there was a board meeting happening at the same time and I have to admit I was giggling as we pounded up the stairs like elephants for 35 minutes.
