I spent most of the afternoon hauling my mother's stuff out of a barn and organizing it. Lots of moving around, bending, and wanting to murder my already dead parent. I'm counting this.

That's too much yoga, but I'm going to take it. My stats for this year are decimated. Oh, well. I'll keep on keeping on, even though the perfectionist in me wants to say fuck it and stop working out this year because I'll never meet my goals.

Were your workouts successful in October? What exercise is your favorite?

Engie, I feel like you could use a cheerleader so I am going to point out all the good I see. You worked out so many times even when you felt unmotivated! You did a ton of yoga, which is so good for your body AND brain -- and perhaps was exactly what you needed. I don't think there's such a thing as "too much yoga," is there? No, there is not! You were also walking Hannah every day, which is not reflected here, and which is also cardiovascular, bone-strengthening exercise. You did GREAT!
ReplyDeleteMy sweet friend. You lost a parent this year. You have been traveling back and forth dealing with illness and death and post-death tasks that are heavier than ANY weights you could lift in the gym, and you are DOING IT. I of course think you should continue to exercise (yoga is exercise! walking Hannah is exercise!) but I definitely think you should also say fuck it to the goals you made many months ago, in a time before you lost your mom, in a time before you had any idea what this year would demand from you, physically and mentally and emotionally. Maybe new goals are in order, like being kind to yourself, and continuing to do movement that feels good, and continuing to take days off when you need to. You are going through an incredibly difficult stage. If your exercise goals help push you to move when you otherwise might not, great. But if they are making you feel bad when you are already having a tough time -- those goals are no longer serving you.
Sending you all the love.
Love the foot selfie! I have recently become a HUGE FAN of standing abs. I am REALLY liking the Apple FItness Plus strength workouts (as much as I can like any strength workout). I am sorry I flaked on our walk plans-- this month is A LOT for me as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat Suzanne said! Goals are here to serve you, you do not serve the goals. The problem with being a numbers person, speaking from experience, is that it can jump from data to judgement when you don't meet the numbers. The end goal is to feel good and be healthy, which doesn't look the same everyday and in every season.
ReplyDelete"There's no such thing as too much yoga." - me
ReplyDeleteMy friend Swistle always said "drops in the bucket are still drops IN the bucket" and I think about that all the time. Some workouts are better than no workouts. I am also a believer in fluid goals. Your whole 2025 has been so challenging and yet you keep on keeping on. I get it, I do. You want to meet your goals! Of course you do! But again, Engie Making Goals is not the same Engie of Today. So you didn't KNOW that things would go off the rails so much. How could you? So I am here to say that you are doing so well, you are doing the things, you are getting up in the morning and moving your body and going to work and taking care of your pets and your house and YOU ARE DOING IT. Just do what you can, fuck the arbitrary numbers (easier said than done, I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW)
Um, you also walk ALL THE TIME, Engie. I do nothing but walk right now. Nothing. No yoga, no strength. You're doing great on the exercise front, really and truly.
ReplyDeleteI suspect it feels like one aspect of life you can control right now when lots of other things feel very much out of control? But maybe it would be useful to just...take a break? Or pick something to "fail" at. Some thing that does not HAVE to happen that you typically WANT to happen but for the sake of your mental health needs to temporarily be taken off your list?
Just some random thoughts that may be of zero use.
Engie. You are doing GREAT. I know it's not the goal you set for yourself, but you couldn't foresee all that was going to happen this year. The fact that you're still working out consistently shows a lot of dedication. And- you're not in a contest. You're not going to "lose" the fitness competition. Your body is thanking you for every single thing you do- walking, strength, yoga. Keep at it, the best you can.
ReplyDeleteI like that "backchain" workout! I'm thinking of doing it this week- I just have to make sure I have the appropriate band.
Is there an update on your foot? I know you were seeing a doctor.
