9.24 Family - In the Mail

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Every day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined topic chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the twenty-fourth day of the month is "Family."

*******************

Dr. BB and I spent a day in Chicago a couple of weekends ago. He needed to pick up an instrument he was having some work done at a specialty shop there and I went to check off my "leave the five-block radius of your house for something other than the grocery store" goal.  While we were there, we went to a fancy stationery shop that sells fancy pens that sell for thousands of dollars. As one does when you find yourself in that sort of neighborhood.

My husband bought fancy paper and some ink for his fancy pens* and does anyone want to know what I bought?

Postcards! Of course. I sent them to my mom, sister, uncle, and a couple of college friends. I also sent some of my infamous women in art postcards to a couple of people I'd been thinking about.

*My husband loves writing utensils, especially fountain pens. Like, he really loves them. One of the most valuable items that we have in our entire house is a fountain pen he splurged on early in grad school. Turns out that this pen is a limited edition of some sort and now is conservatively worth more than ten times what he paid for it. *shrug* It's his daily pen, though, so I guess we're not selling it for that sweet money.

When's the last time you got a postcard in the mail?

  1. I am close close to losing the ability to write. I am not a good ‘typist’ either. There isn’t much hope for me. 🥸

    1. Thank goodness for great audio to text in these modern times!

  2. Fun! I always get a little overwhelmed with the idea of going to Chicago, mostly just because all the busy traffic on the way down makes me a little anxious. It's fun to go there now and then to get that "big city feel" that we just don't really have here.

    1. I actually don't mind the crowded highways, but the surface streets in Chicago stress me out! My husband drove, though, so that was nice.

  3. 1. I just wanted to say how impressed I am that you are so diligent with this daily posting project. I love the posts, but it must be so challenging to write them EVERY DAY. Especially because sometimes you are writing MULTIPLE POSTS each day, and a lot of the "extra" posts (budget, book club) must take a very long time to put together!

    2. I love that your husband is a writing utensil aficionado! That's so fun! I love it when people have a special passion like that.

    3. Yay for fancy stationery shops!!!

    1. 1. I am exhausted and am excited that the end of this daily blogging project is pretty near.
      2. My husband's love for fountain pens is an interesting personality quirk. I think it's fun because he knows SO MUCH about pens!
      3. It was really cool. If I had an unlimited budget, I would have spent a fortune in there.

  4. I would enjoy browsing in this Stationary Store. I do love a good ink pen, but can't seem to hold onto them. Bravo to your husband for that.
It's been a few years since I've received a postcard.

    1. Ha! I'm like you - I can't keep track of writing implements. He bought me a really nice pencil once and I immediately lost it.

  5. We got a postcard - for ourselves! - a few months ago. We went it when we were in Italy, but it took MONTHS to arrive, so we assumed it was lost. And then what a happy surprise when it showed up much faster than expected.

The timing on mail is weird. We once sent two postcards from Europe to people who live about 20 minutes away from each other. One person received it in THREE days, and it took the other person weeks to get their postcard.

    1. The timing of mail is definitely weird, especially international mail. I used to do Postcrossings, where you'd send postcards to people around the world and sometimes postcards would get there in a week and sometimes it would be months! Crazy!

  6. I love this post; it really resonates with me because my family is all about thank you notes and post cards and Real Mail. I always send post cards to people when I travel and I have a great collection of ones that I have received from friends and family! It is so easy to do, especially when you are traveling in the US, and it is so fun to receive one! It is a little expensive if you are abroad (I think the stamp alone is generally over $1) but again, it is so fun to receive it, so it is a perfect gift (plus the kids love looking at the stamps and the fun pictures).

    1. Fortunately I don't send much international mail, but it can get pricey when I do. The price of postage stamps does keep increasing, but postcard stamps are still only 51 cents, so that seems doable.

  7. I love the postcards you picked out! I send them often and got a few in the mail last month.

Pens sound like a really cool collectible! I'd love to learn more about what qualities he looks for in a nice pen!

  9. Dr. BB sounds like one of the more interesting people one could meet. Fountain pens? Reading along with ATGIB? Engie, you clearly hit the jackpot in the spouse (and pet!) category. :) (Also I am driving in to Chicago in a couple of weeks. Help.)
