10.14 Control - Can't Get You Out of My Head

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the fourteenth day of the month is "Control."

***************

"Of things" is the motto of our house, so I'm the first to admit that there are some things I can control, but mostly I cannot control.

Last night as I was lying in bed, the lyrics to the song "One Toke Over the Line" by the one-hit wonder Brewer & Shipley and I just wanted my mind to be blank and not a series of hopes about the arrival of a train. Then I remember asking my father what a "toke" was and he instead started talking about the metaphor of the train and what the song was actually trying to convey and then all of a sudden I was eight again and wondering why no one would answer a simple question.

Of things.

***************

What's the song stuck in your head right now?

  1. You had a clever father to deflect like that.

    1. Oh, we have very different viewpoints on this, I think. I think he should have told me. This is just one example of why I don't deflect or lie to my nieces and nephews. If he won't answer this question, how could I approach with him difficult topics later on? I'm not saying he had to give me a whole long spiel, but an age-appropriate explanation about a cigarette that contains illegal drugs would have been fine.

And now you have more insight on why my relationship with my father was not great.

  2. So many songs are stuck in my head because we've been driving quite a bit this summer and listen to the same 20 songs on repeat. We picked good songs, so it's okay...but I'm ready for some fresh music come fall! Thankfully, the kids LOVE to sing along, so it makes car rides a breeze for us at this point.

  3. Well, now the song stuck in my head is Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue! That at least has positive associations. My husband and I listened to that song (it was popular at the time, I think?) the first time we ever traveled overseas together. It was SUCH a great trip we took -- we went to Zurich and Copenhagen and had a wonderful time. And traveling with someone is a fantastic way to see if you are compatible in so many ways!

I have also recently had the theme song to the teeny-sitcom "Jessie" stuck in my head because that's what my daughter is watching while my husband and I ignore her (to pack!!!). So that song has implications of both irritation and guilt.

By the way, I did not remember your "Of Things" mantra. It's fantastic. I love it. And I also love the glimpses you give us of your marriage. You and your husband seem to have such a strong, wonderful, in tune relationship. Makes me very happy.

    1. Of things. It's interesting being married to a political theorist because things like this become dinner conversation and somehow get integrated into our lives. I recommend this mantra when things are crazy in life, like they are for you right now!

  4. I am the exact opposite of your dad! I always tell the boys when songs are about drugs, if asked. And sometimes if not asked! Just yesterday my son was driving me somewhere because I am LIVING THE CHAUFFEURED LIFE and Mr Brownstone came on. He said "I am not up on my heroin vernacular so I'd never know this was about heroin if you hadn't told me." Which, really? Never? He's 19. I guess heroin isn't what it was in MY DAY. (I've never done heroin, but it seemed to be on trend back in the day, now I guess it's all something else. Fentanyl. Or meth? I mean I'm not up on it and my kids aren't on drugs so how would I know). Earlier this morning I had 24K Magic stuck in my head which happens more often than one might think, but yesterday I had Free Bird, which is a terrible song to get stuck in your head because it's limited on lyrics. I'm as free as a bird now and this bird you cannot change!

    1. I think you're doing it right! I had so many resentments because no one would ever answer my questions! I have no idea what drugs the kids are singing about now because I am out of touch (see my references to a Kylie Minogue song from 20 years ago and a one-hit wonder from 50 years ago), but I do imagine it's booze and meth, right?

  5. I had a migraine last night and all I wanted to do was clear my mind and try to find some peace and quiet, and the song No Sugar Tonight by The Guess Who was stuck in my head.

    1. Why do these songs persist so much? I hope you're on to a different song now!

  6. Terrible Disney songs. Always. I am also not a deflector-- more of a blurter, really.

  7. I love your Father's quick deflection! There are times I will get a children's song/nursery rhyme stuck in my head and it's maddening. I mean, my children are bonafide adults, why do the songs linger?

    1. Songs for children are purposeful earworms - that's why they're always getting stuck in our heads!

  8. I have no songs stuck in my head right now luckily. I absolutely loathe having a song stuck in my head but it happens often since my kids like to listen to the same things over and over again!

  9. Oh, man. Earworms. The. Worst. And so inexplicable! I had never read about your household's motto, and I love it. Thanks for sharing!
