Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the seventh day of the month is "Contact."

When I did my AMA posts for NaBloPoMo (Part I and Part II), Elisabeth asked if the people I send snail mail to ever mail me back. The answer is generally no, but the thing is that when my nieces and nephews go on a trip, their parents usually make them mail me us a postcard and I we adore it when I we get unexpected delights like this in the mail. (I try to be fair to Dr. BB here, but everybody, right down to the six-year-old boy, knows that I am responsible for making sure they get cards/gifts/postcards and that he's riding on my snail mail coattails. That being said, this postcard was addressed to both of us, so I will include him. Grudgingly.)
They write their own messages now! I melt into a puddle right on my floor.
What's the last fun thing you got in the mail?
Awww that's so cute! My MIL sent a (very nice) anniversary card, which I appreciated, but she addresses everything to Mr and Mrs Myhusbandsfirstname Myhusbandslastname WHICH I HATE. Not only because I did not change my name when I got married, but also we've been married for 21 years and I hate being addressed as Mrs My Husband. But the card was nice.
ReplyDeleteI really hate Mr and Mrs Myhusbandsfirstname Myhusbandslastname, too! I do sort of laugh, though, because my husband is technically a "Dr," so when they address it to "Mr," it's funny because both of our names are wrong. I have written several posts about this very thing and it drives me crazy!!! Especially because the largest offender is MY OWN MOTHER who refuses to believe I didn't change THE NAME SHE GAVE ME. But I have to get over this, I guess, and accept that not everyone is as aware of this pet peeve as the two of us are.
DeleteI can’t answer your question because I don’t remember anything fun offhand. Our mail consists mostly of bills and flyers.
ReplyDeleteOf course! Most of us have boring mail most of the time. That's why this is such an interesting thing to think about!
DeleteOMG I love love love that! I just got two Easter cards yesterday - one to me and Steven, and one from Dexter (my sister's cat) to my cats. So sweet.
ReplyDeleteI am BIG on sending snail mail and packages and love that it's one of your yearly goals!
Cats sending cats mail! I love it and want Zelda to have a feline friend to send mail to!
DeleteI just got an unexpected gift in the mail from my dear friend in MD. She made me a cute cross-stitch piece and framed it for me. Just because.
ReplyDeleteAnother friend is a world traveler, and he sends me terrifically odd postcards from all over the world. The one from Croatia simply says in big block letters on an orange background COULD LOOK AT YOU FOR HOURS. I have it on my bedroom mirror, and everytime I see it, it makes me chuckle.
I love sending postcards from all over, too! It's hard to find good ones these days, so I admire your friend's fortitude in tracking down interesting ones.
DeleteI got a thank-you card from a friend for something I sent her, which was unexpected and very nice. I love getting letters from kids! The careful printing and the interesting spellings just make me so happy.
ReplyDeleteI love getting the stuff from kids, too. Our fridge is just filled with thank you notes and postcards from the niblings. It's just crazy because they were BABIES and NOW THEY CAN WRITE and spell my name!
DeleteMy cute story about that is that my oldest stepson sent my parents a letter after Christmas thanking them for their gift (a bar of chocolate with a $50 bill hidden in the wrapper). Not only did it thrill them to bits but it thrilled us because we had no idea that he'd done it.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a lovely tribute to your parenting that he just did it without any prompting. That's a GREAT story and I can see why you would be proud of him.
DeleteThis is so cute! I love it when kids write letters. I cannot for the life of me think of anything fun I've gotten in the mail recently... unless you count a book which I ordered for myself. Books are always fun.
ReplyDeleteI love a good package, even if it's something I've ordered myself. Getting a book in the mail IS a treat.
DeleteI think the last fun things I got were belated birthday cards a couple of weeks ago... I love that you get cute postcards with nibling scribbles!!
ReplyDeleteIt seriously does make my heart melt. I mean, they were thinking about us on their vacation. What a lovely thing.
DeleteGosh, this gave me total nostalgia! When I was a kid we traveled around the U.S. quite a lot on long road trips, and my mom would always send my grandma a postcard from each place. I distinctly remember going to hotel lobbies with my mom to find the "mailbox" to mail them out and sitting in the breakfast area tables while she wrote a message on it. This was of course pre iphone times. My mom used to also go find PAY PHONES if we were at a campground, to call her mom sometimes with some sort of calling card I think! So funny to think back on. Now if I travel and I'm not with my mom, I can send literal play by plays with photos, facebook posts, etc. I love the idea of still sending postcards. My parents have an older lady friend/neighbor who is single and used to travel extensively in her younger years, and she loves to live vicariously through our family travels now. My mom always sends her email updates, or photos, or even copies of my travel blog posts sometimes, and she always writes back how much she loves to receive them and "travel the world" with us. She always likes to hear what my boys are up to in regular life, too. I should have them send her a physical postcard from our next trip- she'd probably get a real kick out of that!
ReplyDeleteSending postcards is a bit old-fashioned. I send them anyway, even though most of the time I'm already home by the time folks get their postcards. I think there's something different about the tactile experience of holding a postcard in your hand instead of getting text or emailed photos. I always bring stamps and my address list on vacation.
DeleteThis is so cute!!!! My daughter collects postcards and it has been so sweet how some friends have sent her postcards on various travel adventures.
ReplyDeleteLast "fun" thing I received in the mail was likely my Secret Santa gift from Nicole. The last "wow" thing was a rebate cheque for upgrading the windows in our house. The rest of the mail is mostly bills or flyers. #Boring
Oh, no! If the last "fun" thing you got was a Secret Santa gift, you need more fun mail. Duly noted. (Adds "send Elisabeth a postcard" to my April to-do list.)
DeleteOh, I can't even remember the last fun thing I got in the mail. I assume we're not counting packages from Amazon. A refund check from our dental insurance? Sigh. Of course, I don't send cards to people like you do, so I probably don't deserve any amazing mail. I love the postcard you got- especially I like how they were apparently trying out cursive on the word "san?" Too cute.
ReplyDeleteAlso adds "send Jenny a postcard" to the April to-do list! You all need more fun mail in your lives!! You do "deserve" amazing mail just for being an awesome person.
DeleteYES! It's cursive on the "San"! So CUTE!
"Snail Mail Coattails" HA!! Thanks for the giggle. I love that you send so much snail mail and that your family and friends really appreciate your effort. I remember sending lots of postcards back in the day and receiving them. I've saved all of them that were sent to me; they're special.
ReplyDeleteOMG, this is adorable! I love that they send you postcards! I think the last fun thing I got in the mail was a postcard from Kim! She sent me a postcard while she was in California, and it was such a delight to find it in my mailbox!
ReplyDeleteThis is so very adorable. I love little kid handwriting. And they are sooo economical with writing. Ha. We always get thank yous for Christmas and birthday gifts and they are very brief/to the point - which I don't mind because writing is pretty tough for many kids! But what a delight to get a postcard in the mail.
ReplyDeleteYou and my parents are so similar with this! They love sending postcards. The most recent trip, they had the postcards ready to go then couldn't find the post box (they were in Italy). So instead of a mailed postcard (it already had an Italian stamp, so couldn't be sent when they got home), I got a picture of the front and back. :)
ReplyDeleteFun mail comes from my second parents, who send me random cards and make me smile. And my dad, who will randomly order me things and send them to me without letting me know they're coming. A challenge when you live in an apartment and don't check the package room regularly!
