5.23 Atmosphere - A Good Old-Fashioned Catch Up

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Every day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined topic chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the twenty-third day of the month is "Atmosphere."

****************

There has been plenty of complaining about the time change and I am here for all of the whining because I too am still sort of out of whack because of it. But what I don't really mind so much is that the sunrise has been quite beautiful on my morning walk with Hannah for the last week or so. And there's nothing I like more than how my dog's shadow looks like a wolf in the morning. If I just saw her shadow, I would think she was really a vicious creature.

I also really enjoyed that on Monday evening when I was walking back from yoga, it wasn't dark. I didn't even have my big winter coat on. I mean, I'm still wearing my heated vest daily, of course, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Just yesterday afternoon I wore just the vest on my weekly trip to drop off books/pick up holds at the library - no coat. Yes, that's right. It gets into the 40s in Wisconsin and suddenly we're just not wearing coats anymore.

Speaking of the library, I mentioned in my last library post that I had a physical copy of a book on hold for months and I needed to ask the librarian about it and so when I was checking out my holds, I asked. So, it turns out that our system has ONE copy (located in Waukesha, so I'm outing you, Waukesha Public Library), but that book was "in repair" and had been for quite some time. So then she dug deeper and realized that that Waukesha had ordered another copy but it was "in process" and she kept using quote marks with her fingers and then the library director of my branch came over and asked me how long I'd had it on hold and I said "at least since December" (because that's when I first wrote about it on my blog, but I'm sure it was before then) and he said they'd order it for me. So we'll see if/when that happens.

What do you like about the time change? Let's reframe it as something that benefits us!

  1. So I love to complain about the time change and I am still NOT a fan but...last night we dropped the kids off at their evening activity and went grocery shopping and doing various other errands and it was light when we came out of most of the stores and that was...lovely!
And I'm finally waking up at the right time, so I'm feeling much less crusty about the time change than I was a week ago...!

    1. Yes! It is nice that I don't feel like the day should be over at 6pm because it's pitch black. That does make this time of year a lot better.

  2. Yes, although I always complain about turning the clocks ahead (I don't mind turning them back) i have to admit that I've been appreciating a couple things. First, my morning runs have been cooler! Since 6:30 is old 5:30, I'm our there an hour earlier. I don't like running in the dark though, and if I lived up north I doubt I would like running an hour earlier.
The other thing is, I don't like to drive in the dark (I can do it, i'm just slightly uncomfortable.) So there have been a few times lately where I was out driving at 6 or 7 pm and I was really happy it was light out. So as always, we just have to take the good with the bad.
I love the photo with Hannah's ferocious shadow! Actually the first thing I thought was "they had a sunny day!"

    1. Yes, I think the sunny days are over for a while. The extended forecast includes days and days of rain, wintry mix, and clouds. *sigh* I enjoyed it while we had it!

  3. Oh, I'm here for the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the change, too. My sleep has been terribly disrupted. But I will say that as a person who cannot drive confidently at night, this frees me up for more evening driving. I can go out and meet with friends for dinner or a drink and not feel so worried.
And I know that pretty soon, it will be porch and patio time!

    1. Patio time is coming! We just have to get through the rainy spring first.

  4. I don't mind the time change. I have enough issues with sleeping (at times) that I can't tell if the change affects me. If I want a summer sunrise photo, I have to get out pretty early anyway, so I am just as glad it isn't another hour earlier.

    1. I don't envy you your sleep issues, but I do sort of envy you that the time change doesn't really impact your day-to-day!

  5. I need to hear more about this heated vest! I am all about no coat once it's over 30 and not windy and I am not talking much outside. Ha!

I hope they order the book.

I used to really struggle with more light in the evenings (I like the cozy dark winters) when the change first happens in the late winter but now I am more used to it and that is what I like about the time change too!

    1. I have an Ororo heated vest and I LOVE it. I wear it every day, inside and under my coat when I go outdoors in the winter. It is also really useful for spring and fall. I feel like a heated vest should be a wardrobe staple for people who run cold and live in cold weather climates!

  6. Same as you-- the suuuuuuuuun . It has been great to begin my day and head into evening with light.

    1. I do love that it is lighter outside during more of my waking hours, I must admit. Maybe it's worth the week/week and a half of messed up sleep twice a year?

  7. I'm glad you wrote this. I don't like changing the time, whether it be to DST or away from it in the fall. That being grumbled I'll admit that there is a certain beauty to seeing how pretty the trees look bathed in light for longer at night.

    1. Yes, I was complaining about it SO much that I decided I had to reframe it. I do like a lot about it and I should pay more attention to the good than the bad.

  8. I don't mind the time change. Sure, the week of my body notices the hour's loss. But my mind notices the extra light every day. It's a delicate balance.😊

    1. Yes, it IS a delicate balance and I was just focusing on the negatives instead of thinking of all the positives that I really do get out of it.

  9. I like the time change. Sure I miss the light in the mornings but it will be back in a few weeks and it's nice that we're not walking the dog in total darkness after dinner. Adjusting to the time change is a different story.

    1. It sounds like most of us are on this page. I am enjoying the longer evenings - it makes it seem like the day isn't over as soon as the work day is over.

  10. I've gotten used to the time change... although the first couple of days were so rocky. I'm enjoying longer evenings and time outside after dinner.

    1. I think my sleep has adjusted now so I'm much less likely to be whiny about DST, but I still kind of wonder if there's another, better way to do it?!

  11. Strangely, I always feel like the time change doesn't affect me much because I can usually sleep in and make up for the lost hour, but I still always feel off for a couple of days. The human body is strange. I do enjoy the earlier sunrise in the morning though... it means I can go running earlier during the week.

    1. Oh, interesting that you don't feel like the time change impacts you. It definitely throws me out of sync for a couple of weeks!

  12. I love the "spring forward" time change! Getting extra light in the evening is EVERYTHING to me. I do feel like my sleep has been affected greatly by the change, but it's worth it to me.

    1. Yes, the light in the evening is making life more manageable for me, too. I don't feel like the day is over at 4pm!

  13. I loathe the time change but I actually like springing forward more than falling back because falling back = an extra hour of parenting, not an extra hour of sleep. Plus I like more daylight in the evening. That way we can go for family walks after dinner, or theoretically we could if the it wasn't still winter-like here!

I love that your library is ordering a book for you!

    1. I DO like the extra light in the evenings. It is delightful. I just wish I wasn't so slow to get motivated in the extra dark of the morning.

  14. I go to bed so early that I'm not a super-fan of DST...and I get up so early that I do miss the morning light (until it - eventually- returns). That said I was driving Friday later than I usually am and was quite glad that the time had changed.. it was only dark-dark for the last ~hour. Whew.
