Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the twelfth day of the month is "Complaint."

Because of all the melting that is going on around here, the rivers in our town are overflowing their banks and there is flooding. That means two things of interest.
1) Two of my favorite walking paths are not options for me and Hannah the Dog. The riverwalk is flooded and the nearby park where I let her run around off leash is flooded on the walking paths and the field where I take her is just a mud pit.
2) The road that connects a county highway to our street and makes my husband's commute a lot shorter is flooded. There is also construction that has closed the state highway from our town to the neighboring town, so that is also closed to my husband as a commute option. So basically his commute is almost twice as long as it usually is because of this. (I felt deja vu when I was typing this and that's because I wrote about this EXACT THING five years ago - complete with badly done maps I made in Paint.)
Also, because Hannah and I need new walking options, late last week I took her on a walk across Main Street, which I rarely do because it feels like A Big Deal to cross Main, even though it is not objectively any busier or more troublesome than crossing our own street, which I do roughly four times a day with Hannah. ANYWAY. We crossed Main and there were lots of new smells and exciting things to look at, including this creepy rabbit sculpture thing in someone's yard. (I don't like rabbits. I really don't like rabbits when they would be the size of my dog if they somehow magically came to life. I don't know how many poorly trained magicians are just wandering around my town, do I?)
How many rabbit sculptures do you pass by every day? How's your commute these days?
Now I am thinking about what it will be like here i a few weeks. We had quite a bit of snow in the last half of winter.
ReplyDeleteYes, this is early for flooding. *sigh* I think it's just going to be an ongoing issue for the next couple of months.
DeleteWe have a few rabbit sculptures around town, which I enjoy because my sweet dog HATES rabbits. Luckily she doesn't react to the sculptures. There is also a very realistic looking dog sculpture near the sidewalk. It's not on a dog walking route, but I've always wondered if she would have a reaction to it. I know it's scared me quite a few times.
ReplyDeleteHannah did not react to this sculpture, so I guess that's good? Hannah does NOT like the dalmatian statue near our fire station, so it's possible your puppers might react badly to a realistic looking dog sculpture!
DeleteRabbits have always seemed so sinister to me! One of my friends has 2 giant ones as pets and they're bigger than my dog, which is so unsettling... Sorry about the flooding! Exploring new paths can be fun, but your poor husband with his doubled commute, oof.

DeleteThe character Raj on The Big Bang Theory said, "Big or small, I don't like rabbits. They always look like they're about to say something, but they never do." I'm a fan of rabbits, but not yard art. And there is so much road construction in our little town right now that everywhere I go takes me significantly longer due to several detours and one-lane roads. I understand the frustration.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry to hear that you are also in road construction season. I don't want to complain too much because we're lucky that we have so many options and it will be great when the construction is finished, but it is a LOT of extra time.
DeleteWe have a lot of snowmelt too, but no flooding yet... (just a matter of time!). A doubled commute sounds awful! Also, I'm sorry rabbits aren't your thing... Bad experience, creepy "Harvey" exposure? How do you get through Easter?!
ReplyDeleteEaster is very challenging. My father-in-law's wife has a giant stuffed bunny that she likes to take photos of the grandkids with and that thing is terrifying. I do not care for it.

ReplyDeleteI will admit I rarely come across rabbit statues. I work from home so my commute can be as short as walking to the dining room table; at max, it's a trek downstairs to our office. But...we walk the kids to school, so I call that my "commute." Lately, it has been snowy, but it's nice to walk through freshly fallen snow, especially in the woods (part of our walk can be done in a gorgeous forest).
We have had some gorgeous snow in the last few days, so I totally get how a walk through the freshly fallen snow is spectacular this time of year!

ReplyDeleteI guess the good thing about all this flooding is that it's caused by snow melting, which is a sign of spring? I would not be happy if I were your husband though! My commute is really easy- I live about ten minutes from work. We haven't had rain for ages here- summer is our wet season and we get some flooding then.
I guess I thought rabbits were cute until I ran into some mean bunnies. Now I just think they look like they're ready to bite.
DeleteYes, the snow melted and then we got more snow, so it's going to happen again. Flooding is just a spring staple in a river town, I guess!
That rabbit sculpture is... something. I do think there are some rabbit sculptures in my neighborhood, although none so anthropomorphized (nor as colorful) as the one you found. They are more run of the mill stone rabbits pretending to be real rabbits in people's gardens, I think. I will surely pay more attention from now on.

ReplyDeleteI'm dreading when all of the snow melts here, I think we're going to have some serious flooding. We don't have any snow where we are, but the Sierras are getting an AMAZING amount, and now we have warm rain coming, which is likely to melt it too fast. Not good.
I sing that song A LOT. Anya and I have a lot of similar character traits and she's not wrong about anything she says in that song!!

I don't get rabbit statues. Seems weird. We have plenty of real ones running around!
DeleteWhen you lived in the Twin Cities, did you see the massive bronze bunny along Minnehaha Creek by Portland Ave? It's such a landmark for us. We drive by it on the way to gymastics so I always point it out to the boys when we drive by. It will be decorated for the seasons, like santa hats in December, Easter decorations, etc.
ReplyDeleteI imagine we'll have flooding conditions here as well. We had pretty awful droughts the last 2 summers but now the creeks are full and much of our snow hasn't melted - and we are getting more tomorrow. Looks like we might break the record for seasonal snowfall. That's what Phil is cheering for at this point. He figures we might as well set a record.
Oh, wow! I never did see that rabbit statue. How absolutely TERRIFYING. I would not have been pleased if I had known it was so close to me!
DeleteI had a friend suggest that I should get a pet *rabbit* as I'm allergic to cats. Um, no. No no no no. Thank you. (Also, I haaate when "temporary" issues change my typical routes... yes, I am a creature of habit...)
