The voting was so close that there were moments when all three were tied and a good chunk of time when two books were tied for the lead. I had to actually make sure I had all three books in my possession because I was worried you'd all vote on one that I didn't have.
It was a real nail biter.
In the end, Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata (translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori) pulled out the victory by ONE POINT.
Here's the schedule as I see it. I'm going to give everyone a couple of weeks to find the book and then we'll start on our usual Monday schedule. It's a short book, so I think we'll be able to do in a couple of weeks. (I am SO SORRY, friends, but this book has NO CHAPTERS. I'm using page numbers and some language cues.)
Monday, 10/19 - Pages 1-81 (there's a break separated by * * * between two paragraphs - the first paragraph ends in "fix me" and the second paragraph begins with "Somehow I felt")
Monday, 10/26 - Page 81- end
Monday, 11/2 - Wrap-up
****************
This gives you about 80 pages a week to read, which seems doable since the book is tiny.
Thanks once again to all who voted! Who's in for this round of CBBC?

I'm in!
ReplyDeleteYay! I hope you like this book.
DeleteI'm in! I especially love that it's short, not gonna lie!
ReplyDeleteI will admit I loathe when books have no chapters (or really, really, really long chapters), but I feel like since it's short, it will feel more doable!
I'm hoping the big break with the "* * *" means it's a thematic change or something. Maybe I should have reread it before I chose that breaking point, but time wasn't in my favor.
DeleteI didnt expect this one! Off to the library website to put in a hold.
ReplyDeleteIt made a surprise comeback after an early surge by The Vegetarian.
DeleteI won't be here for the discussion BUT I have this book on my Kobo, so I'll be reading along with you. I also got The Vegetarian out at the library just in case you chose it, and I'd already read I Who Have Never Known Men, so my bases were covered. Have a fun book club!
ReplyDeleteYou had them all! I had to some legwork to get them all in my house.
DeleteI thought about this last night, and wondered if I missed the announcement. Looking forward to it. Thanks for organizing.
ReplyDeleteNope, I'm just slow getting things out.
DeleteI'm in!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait!
DeleteI am in! I just placed a hold on Libby and am first in line for an estimated two week wait. *Dulcie*
ReplyDeleteOh, that would be PERFECT timing. May the Libby gods be with you.
DeleteI'm the friend that Elisabeth mentioned in your post about the voting selections - the blogger friend that did not care for the book. So I will sit this one out. I know you loved it, though, so I'm glad you'll be leading the discussion about about you loved. I feel like you hadn't loved the last several books we've discussed!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm so glad it was a book I know I'll love chatting about. It has really stuck with me, so I'm glad I'll get a chance to talk about it.
DeleteI think I'm in! Libby says there is a three week wait, but I am hoping that it goes quicker than that.
ReplyDelete(This is Suzanne.)
Let's all hope the Libby gods cooperate for you and Dulcie!
DeleteOoh! I voted for this one! I'm rushing off to the library website to put a hold on it right now. I'm excited!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm glad you're excited. I read the first few pages and I'm already taken with it all over again.
DeleteI'm in! My library had a million years long waiting list, so I got a Kindle copy.
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm glad you're going to join along.
DeleteI just read a sample, and this one is not for me. Enjoy, everyone, and I'll catch you on the next one.
ReplyDeleteI'll miss you, Nance! Your explanations were the only reason The Age of Innocence started making sense. (I was thinking recently Archer was almost like Orpheus at the end - led into the underworld where he could see his love - but didn't turn around so he could keep his memories untarnished by reality. Going in would have meant he would face reality.)
DeleteAre you sure? It's probably not my type of book either, but I'm trying it. (As long as it's not like Sky Daddy, I will muddle through.)
Oh, wow! I just read the first few pages and I was immediately drawn in again. I think Keiko is such a fascinating character.
Deletembmom11--Thank you for such a kind remark. And thank you also for your Archer As Orpheus interpretation. Yes, I'm sure; I just felt bored by the writing and the subject. I can be difficult to please, I guess.
DeleteThis is exciting!! I'm glad you didn't have to do a recount over a hanging chad or anything like that. 🤣
ReplyDeletePart of the reason I waited so long is that I was hoping someone would come in and break the tie at the top. And then someone did!!
DeleteI’m so glad that we are going to read a book you like for a change, it’s been a little rough lately. I’ll try to get a copy this week…not going to happen from the library, so I guess I’ll buy it if I get a chance!
ReplyDeleteI actually bought The Vegetarian, so I'm going to read that one, too!
DeleteI picked up a copy at the bookstore today! My daughter saw it and said she listened to it and it’s really good (albeit weird). Yay!
DeleteAh dang, I was hoping I had a headstart and it was book number 1 - which, btw, also had no chapters! So weird! I am hoping I’ll get the chosen book soon - currently on the waiting list at my library.
ReplyDeleteMaybe these super short books just don't see the need for chapters.
DeleteI owned this book but swapped it. We'll see if I get it in the library again. Otherwise I just need to work my brain on what was going on so I can join the discussions. Excited. Even though the timing is a bit hard for me. We'll see. Thanks for organizing again.
ReplyDeleteYou know what? I'm the one who plans these things and it's not good timing for me, either. I really should make a note next year that the ideal timing for me is the end of September/beginning of October!
