Five for Friday, Edition #38

1) CBBC friends! Don't forget to send me your photo by tomorrow at noon central if you want to have it included in next week's post.

2) Hannah's super special boots still have not arrived and today it actually got above freezing, so who knows if she'll ever wear them. Speaking of Hannah, on Wednesday night, she was being a real Velcro dog. When I took a shower, she came into the bathroom (AGAINST THE RULES) and watched me shower. First off, that's a CHOICE, dog. Second of all, what is even happening. We came down yesterday morning to find her in the bathroom again, unable to get out.

This is a real mystery. The baby gate was closed and locked when I went to bed last night and when we came down this morning. How did she get in and how come she was unable to get out the same way? It's a super tall gate, so she can't jump it (she can climb the baby gate we have in our mudroom). She's a magician dog.

Turns out that I forgot to feed her dinner on Wednesday night (this is only the third time I've ever forgotten to feed her) and instead of taking to me to her bowl or something, she just Velcroed up next to us. Good to know, I guess.

3) Can we talk about the winning dog at Westminster?

Penny is a Doberman. She's gorgeous. She seems to have an absolutely amazing temperament and her unblinking stare at the judges was such a boss move that I watched the video of it over and over again.

But Penny has docked ears and a docked tail. Penny should NOT be the breed standard. Let's stop normalizing these painful procedures for dogs. I hate that a big stage like Westminster rewards this.

You can compare Penny to Cello, who won Best of Breed at Crufts in 2025. They're both absolutely stunning canines. But poor Penny can't communicate with her tail and ears.

4) This entire bullet point is simply photos of my girls.

5) Who's excited about the Olympics? Dr. BB sprung for the premium Peacock without commercials. $17 for a month and we can watch all the Olympics we want?! Yay!

I'm excited for all of it. What sport are you excited to watch?

  1. I will watch literally anything-- I love it all. Yesterday, I watched the same mixed doubles curling match twice and also watched women's hockey 1.5 times. SO MUCH REPLAYING, PEACOCK.

    1. It turns out that I do have a limit. I will not watch ice dancing, for instance. I just don't get it!

  2. I keep forgetting the Olympics are starting. Oops! But I love them! We get to stream them for free via CBC Gem, so after reading your post I went and got all logged in and put on Day Zero skating!
I love basically everything at the winter Olympics. I know it's not a popular opinion, but I think I enjoy them as much (if not more) than the summer Olympics. I think because I genuinely like everything. Some of the summer events are boring to me (indoor volleyball? Meh).
Also, I'm going to pick up a huge pile of books at the library so having the Olympics on means I have competing interests. Eeks!

    1. Oh, I like it way more than the summer Olympics. Swimming? Zzzz...it all happens under the water and all you see is splashing. Track? Zzzz...sure, they're going fast, but running is just running. Sports with balls? I don't get it. So it's basically field events and gymnastics for me!

  3. I probably won’t watch much as the O’s are outside of my usual life rhythm. (I always fuss over spelling rhythm and spellcheck isn’t much help.)

    1. I love them! It means we watch tv while eating, which is not something we usually do. We work the Olympics in to our day to day!

  4. Huh. You'll have to give us an update if you figure out how Hannah got past that baby gate. Animals are weird- for some reason Foxy LOVES bathrooms as well.
I always think I'm not interested in the winter events, but then I start watching and get absorbed in whatever is on. I do like summer olympics better, but I agree with Elisabeth- at least in the winter games we don't have to watch volleyball : )

    1. I think she was able to push the baby gate open, but it closed behind her and she can't push it the other way? I just don't know really know the logistics of the baby gate thing. We're both really puzzled. Only Hannah will ever know, I guess.

  5. Totally and completely agree about the docked tail and ears. STOP MUTILATING ANIMALS, PERIOD.
There should be a revision of the breed standards if this is part of it. It's shameful. I noted that the absolutely gorgeous Great Dane also had been mutilated.

I was so excited that my favourite dog breed of all time, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, was finally recognized and placed third in its class. YAY! Next year, Tollers!

I'm not excited about the Winter Olympics, tbh. I like the odd outfits in Curling, and I like the death-defying Skeleton, but otherwise, it's hit or miss viewing for us.

    1. The breed standards allow for docking and non-docking. WHY? Poor babies.

I really love the winter Olympics more than the summer, probably. Plus, during the summer I don't want to sit inside and watch tv, but mid-February, that sounds like an excellent idea.

  6. I became obsessed with snowboard cross when it debuted in Turin in 2006, and will be looking to watch as much of that as possible.

  7. I’m sure we’ll watch some of the Olympics, but I keep forgetting that it’s on and I don’t care. Once I start watching I really enjoy it though.

Poor Penny, WTEF. (E is for even) I hate that they mutilate dogs like that, it’s senseless and barbaric. We watched some agility the other night, and I got to see Bee the Australian shepherd, whom I LOVE and have seen compete before. I’ll bet I could find some Keeshonden from Westminster if I looked. They groom them a little differently than your run of the mill pet, and boy they are floofy!

Here’s Bee from a few years ago, if you want to see. https://jellyjules.com/next-door-neighbor/

    1. Bah, Bee is a shetland sheepdog, not an Australian shepherd. My in-laws used to have a mix and I get them confused. Her name was Nietzche and she was a very good girl.

    2. I love how Bee is so chatty. Don't tell her to calm down! I love freestyle so much, but agility is also really fun to watch.

  8. I'm excited for the Olympics. I'm super fascinated by Ski Mountaineering. I feel like if I did an Olympic sport, I would want to try that one. Except I can't ski.
Okay, I just went down a rabbit hole about docking since I wasn't aware it was a thing - ignorant me thought this is just how Dobermans were made. I would be so sad if someone took away my tail and my ear floppiness because they thought I would look better/show better that way.

    1. Oh, it's NOT how Dobermans just look. People want them to look tough, so they crop their ears. It's too bad because dogs communicate so much with their ears and tails! Poor babies.

  9. I am excited about the Olympics, not the least because I'll be just around the corner from Cortina D'Ampezzo to go skiing with my family in April! :)

Ah dang, poor Penny. She's beautiful. but I absolutely agree, dogs should not be docked. That's terrible. Why do they do this?

    1. Yay! What I'm learning from this Olympics are that the Dolomites are beautiful and I never want to ski there!

  11. Hmm, not sure if I watch much of the Olympics, but my dad already told me how busy he is going to be during that time. I probably watch some for the childhood nostalgia.

    1. It's really one of my top sport events!

  12. Yay Olympics! I am excited and will watch anything. That is a good call to spring for a peacock subscription. I should consider doing that! I am most excited about ice skating. One of the male skaters for the US lost both his parents in that plane crash in DC last year so I am really pulling for him. But I will watch basically anything.

    1. I will watch it all, too! It's so exciting and the winter events are so fun. I actually find ice dancing pretty boring compared to the other skating events - I just don't get it - but I'm hoping that all the athletes have great performances.

  13. Love the complementary gaze-to-the-left animal pics. Agree, they did Penny dirty and they should feel bad, and she is a queen. I don't care about any individual sport, I just don't have the area of the brain lit up for it, but I get caught up in the Olympic spirit and will watch anything (once I remember they are happening - Matt usually just keeps it on all day so I will be reminded). So cute that Dr. BB sprung for the good cable for this occasion.

    1. I love that my husband paid for the expensive app so we can watch without commercials. It has made such a difference!

  14. Aw, poor Penny. That's so unfortunate that her owners did that to her and I'm surprised in this day and age that the pet world doesn't outlaw that. Boo.

I'm excited for the Olympics, and will watch whatever - probably. We haven't had anything on yet. Coach and I watched the documentary about the 1980 gold medal USA hockey team last night when we could've been watching the opening ceremonies. At least it was Olympic adjacent?

How is Hannah getting in there? She is a magician.

    1. Yeah, I probably won't watch any team sports like curling or hockey or anything. I find them boring. Lol. That's why I think the winter Olympics are more fun than summer - more individual sports!

  15. I love watching downhill and freestyle skiing! It was heartbreaking to see Lindsey Vonn crash, and I'm glad Breezy Johnson went first so I could fully enjoy what a kick ass run she had.

Love the photos of your girls! They are so pretty. So is Penny. I did not know that about the tail and ear docking of Doberman pinschers!

Olympics! For some reason, I thought you didn’t like the Olympics. I have the ad-free Peacock and it is SO WORTH IT. I don’t know how much of the Olympics I can watch, but definitely tuning in for everything figure skating!
