Five for Friday, Edition #36: 2026 Has Not Been Awesome

I hit publish on my whole "2026 is all about fun" post and it was like I had challenged a very wrathful god. So what I'm going to do here is start with lighthearted bad stuff, pair it with something I'm grateful for, and that will warm you up for what's going to happen at the end of the post. That way, if you don't want to be depressed as fuck (and who wants to on a Friday?), you can bail early.

*******************

Thing #1: I have been saying the word neologism wrong all my life.

Grateful thing #1: I recently learned how to say neologism correctly. Just kidding, I still say it incorrectly, but note that I know it's wrong.

*******************

Thing #2: Our town recently switched garbage providers. So there was a thing where for a time we had bins for the old place and the new place and they told us to leave our old bins on the curb after the last pickup, which I assumed meant they'd be picked up soon after the last pickup. Well, our last pickup for recycling was December 18 and it was well into the new year before the bin was picked up.

Now, maybe I could have let this go, but here's the deal. We can't leave our bins on the curb because the curb is sloped. That means we have to put it in the street. For more than three weeks DURING WINTER everyone had these stupid bins out on the street and plows were knocking them over and they were being blown from one end of the street to the next. I got increasingly shrill about this.

Grateful thing #2: The bins have been removed.

For weeks!!! Also, the city was supposed to pick up leaves. In November. Ahem.

*******************

Thing #3: During lunch at work, I can only do two of the following things: yoga, eat, go for a walk. That's it. It's hard for me to figure out how to best allocate my time. Since I have to eat or the consequences may include passing out, it really means I choose between doing yoga/stretching or going for a walk. Oh, well. It's on me that I created yearly goals that are in conflict with one another.

Grateful thing #3: I have flexibility to do those three things during lunch.

*******************

Thing #4: I'm worried about Hannah. She's refusing to jump into the car, she has a wart/mole/bump thing that is growing quickly, and tonight I pet her on her hind and she whimpered and tucked tail. I am going to call the vet to see if I can get her an appointment next week.

Grateful thing #4: We can afford treatment for her if it's something bad.

*******************

Thing #5: Humphrey's person's cancer came back. He's starting chemo again. He had to have a discussion about where Humphrey will go if...well, you know what if.

Grateful thing #5: We can wrap Humphrey's person in care and compassion and help him through this. We can walk the dog, shovel the sidewalk, teach his classes, and make him food. So much gratitude that we have the resources and health to do this.

*******************

What are you grateful for today?

  1. I'm so sorry about Humphrey's person. That's really heartbreaking.
Also - I hope Hannah is okay. Please keep me posted.
Our recycle provider is changing and hallelujah because it has been very ANGRY MAKING for me in this city that they don't recycle glass. Well, they do, but you have to drop it off at a depot and it's extremely inconvenient. So you just KNOW most people are burying jars and such in their garbage because it is such a pain to recycle. But! Our new provider does curbside pickup for glass and not a moment too soon (I got super-spoiled in Calgary because they had a really good recycle/ compost program and they took all manner of kitchen waste, and garbage pickup was only every two weeks but blue and green bins were weekly, and it felt so much better than here).

    1. I would love, love, love a townwide compost for kitchen waste. We have a compost for yard waste, which has its drawbacks, but having green bins for kitchen waste would be great.

  2. Our snow has been cleared and the snowbanks too. Yay!

Does your town have regulation garbage bins? They all seem to be the same?

    1. Yes, they are regulation bins provided by the sanitation company so that they are compatible with their trucks. So we had bins from Place #1 (one size) and Place #2 (another size) for weeks. It was frustrating. But our long town-wide nightmare is now over.

  3. F*** CANCER. Seriously. Is it possible to hate a disease? if so, I hate it with every freaking fiber of my being. I hope Humphrey's person feels the love and support and that he is also getting the medical care that he needs.
RE: #1, I disagree completely. I suspect we say it the same way.
RE: #2, town, get it together. Sheesh.
RE: #4, sending positive vibes and oh, goodness, Hannah, you have to be okay. (Insert sad face emoji here)

    1. I can't really think about Humphrey's person without getting very upset right now. It feels like it's all cancer all the time for me right now and I'm over it.

  5. Well shit, Engie. Things 4 and 5 straight up suck. I'm sorry. Sending love to you, Hannah, and Dr. BB and healing vibes to Humphrey's person.

I don't think I have ever said "neologism" out loud, but I was certainly surprised by the correct pronunciation. This reminds me that I have listened to two books recently where the narrator pronounced "skeletal" as "skeh-LEE-tull" and I find that delightful.

I'm grateful for yesterday's snow day and doubly grateful that today is not a snow day.

    1. The guy who hosts the true crime podcast Casefile says skeh-LEE-tull and it makes me giggle. Is it an Australian/Kiwi thing? I don't really know.

We should have had a snow day today, but instead we have a registration event and I can't wait to hear about all the no shows!

  6. Oh, that last one is a very bad and sad thing! Well- fingers crossed. He beat cancer once and will hopefully do it again. Chemo is not fun though.
Ugh on the Hannah worries. Hopefully this is something minor that can be taken care of easily. But... yuck. Pet illnesses are no fun.
I don't think I've ever said "neologism" out loud, and I have to admit I actually had to look up the definitely. So, I learned a lot today!

    1. Oh, neologism is a great word. Maybe we say it too much in our house. And, obviously, we say it incorrectly.

  7. Oh goodness, 4 and 5 are scary shit! I am sending all good thoughts that Hannah’s situation will be OK and not terribly expensive, and that Humphrey’s person can kick fucking cancer to the curb again. Bah on the leaves and garbage bins, ANNOYING. I have never heard of the word neologism.

    I’m with Anne, FUCK CANCER.

    1. Fuck cancer, indeed. I'm over it, to be honest.

  8. I'm dreadfully sorry about Humphrey's person. I feel like cancer shouldn't be able to lurk around and keep coming back. I've had that situation with people I care about, and it's like getting hit by a train. I'm so, so sorry.

The whole garbage pickup thing, I HEAR YOU. Our city's service is irritating beyond limits. Every year we cut down our huge ornamental grasses once they've dried. We bundle them up AS WE ARE TOLD TO and pile them neatly on the curb lawn. EVERY YEAR THEY LINGER THERE FOR MONTHS because the branch pickup people say it's not their job and the trash people say it's not their job. Every year, I get more and more stubborn and do not call because I am going for The Record as to How Long They Will Linger On My Curb Lawn. So far, the answer is THREE MONTHS.

Hang in there, my friend. For the first 15 years or more of my teaching career, I had 20 minutes for lunch. Actually, 15 because they wanted us at our doors for hallway regulation for the 5 minute pass time between classes. I never even bothered to eat. How could I? I'm so glad this is not your situation.

Fingers crossed for dear Hannah. Perhaps it is just a nasty cyst that needs to be drained and all will be well.

  9. I'm so sorry, friend. And what a hard way to start the new year. I'm not sure what to say about cancer as it all sucks and is horrible and really hard. I'm glad Humphrey's person has you in their corner.
Our garbage is a pretty good system. I wish it were weekly, but it's bi-weekly which can get a bit dicey. We have compost pickup (it's mandatory), paper, cardboard, and plastics all have to get separated out into see-through bags and then we can have one black garbage bag. I don't love all the sorting, but I'm happy to do some tiny part for environmental management.
    Poor Hannah :(
I wish I had a magic wand to make all these hard things go away and it legitimately makes me sad that I do not :( Hugs from afar.

Codex: Sorry about your friend and your dog. Hope it turns out okay. Like how you sectioned it into positive goals and solutions. I do something similar.

I go for a walk. eat lunch. Exercise at home. Left a reply on previous.

  11. I am grateful that the sun is shining, and that once the work day is done, I have a three-day weekend. I will try to focus on those things, and not so much on certain other less-cheering thoughts.

I was totally not saying neologism correctly either. Well, it just means we learned it by reading it and not hearing it, and that's not a bad thing.
