2026 Goals

Let's do it!!! I feel like I've really prioritized health and communication in the past few years, so this year I'm going to prioritize fun and leaving the house

I typed "Goals" in my photos and this popped up. There's no grey in her muzzle here. 1/14/21

1) At least one trip with Dr. BB and Hannah - I'd like to some sort of camping trip (maybe a state or national park?). I mean, camping in a cabin, not a tent.

2) At least two trips with friends - Bestest Friend and I already have something fun set up for this month, so this seems very doable.

3) At least two trips to Michigan to visit my high school friends - I'd like to fit in a trip over the summer and a trip for Homecoming in the fall.

4) Go to a fitness class I've never gone to before - I have a couple in mind already.

5) Make homemade ice cream - Years ago, Dr. BB bought me an ice cream maker attachment for my KitchenAid and I've literally never used it.

6) Do one creative thing a week - I have a lot of sewing projects, maybe I could try some blackout poetry a la Tobia, or do something fun from Keep Going by Austin Kleon, which is a fun little book Maya gifted me.

7) Become a regular reader of at least five new blogs in 2026

8) Leave an average of five blog comments on other blogs every day

9) Complete NaBloPoMo this year (I have a special project in mind!)

10) Send at least five postcards every month - also, I'm going to continue to track my snail mail

11) Present at a conference for work - I sent in a proposal in November for a conference on campus in February. Fingers crossed it's accepted.

12) Track how many people come to yoga this semester - The lady who organized yoga at the student union retired last week. I'm so excited for her and all her retirement plans, but that means it's now on me to carry the mantle. I want to track and see how many people go and decide if I want to grow the program or just keep on keeping on. I'd also like to see if I need to buy any more equipment for it.

13) Update my resume - I'll leave it to you to figure out why I might be doing this. I love my job, I really do, but higher education is absolutely under attack right now.

14) Have an ePortfolio example - This is silly, but I teach a course where the students must complete an ePortfolio and I used to have a non-academic example to show them, but it has somehow disappeared. I need to make it come back. This should be fairly straightforward and hopefully will be done in January.

15) Use a new journal to track goals, plan out the year, and take time to notice things I'm grateful for - I have been using habit trackers in a folder to track my goals this year and it worked, but it was more after-the-fact than forward thinking. I want to use this fancy new journal I bought to not only track goals, but be intentional about how and when I'm completing my goals. I want to check in with the journal at least once a day, like I do now with my habit trackers, but also use it once a month with Dr. BB to plan our months and once a week by myself to plan for the week.

16) Take a good photo every week and print them out once a quarter - I want to add these photos to the journal.

17) Take photo of five places at least once a month - The five places are the tree out front, the pond in our neighborhood, the water tower, the log cabin on campus, and maybe the artisan well (this fifth place is still sort of a maybe). I'd like to take those photos roughly around the 15th every month, but I'm going to give myself a lot of grace in that.

18) Pay myself and charity first - My savings has been dismal for YEARS. On every paycheck, I'm going to take money out and put it in various savings places and make at least a $25 donation before I spend other money

19) Reread - I am always tempted by new books, but I buy books I love. I want to reread some of those beloved books this year. Let it be the year of the reread! Last year I reread seven books, so let's say reread twelve this year - one a month, on average.

20) Do a buddy read - I'm always so jealous of other people doing buddy reads. I want to do a buddy read!

21) Gratitude practice - Write down something I'm grateful for every day in my fancy new journal.

Rollover goals

22) Be consistent in working out (at least 80% of days of 30 days of intentional movement) - Look, I have a plan. Will it work? Who knows? But I have a plan.

23) Spend 750 hours outside - Last year I made a 1000 hours goal and it was TOO MUCH. I only made 561.5 hours. I lowered it to 750 this year, but to get those extra hours this year that I didn't get last year, I'm going to start trying to eat lunch outside at least once or twice a week during nice weather and (this is key) read outside if it's daylight and the weather is nice. Also, Hannah and I need to start doing training outside when it's nice out. Surely all of this can add up to another couple hundred hours over the course of a year.

24) Get on the same page as my husband about home repairs, investments, and a will - I 've talked with him about this and we both know we have to do it.

25) Do two more iterations of CBBC on my blog - I think we can do this, can't we, friends?

26) Date night with Dr. BB every month - We talked about this. I think we're both on board!

I've got a couple of Just January goals and I may reserve the right to add some monthly goals here and there.
1) No baked goods or candy.
2) Do this video to improve posture at least twelve times this month.
3) Train Hannah at least twelve times this month.

Motto of the year
Be compassionate

Last year, people around me were so kind and loving. My IRL friends, my blog friends, and my co-workers were so supportive. I want to make sure that I give that support back to the world. My first instinct isn't always compassion, but I want to make compassion be the result of my actions.

  1. You are very goal-oriented and very thorough about it. I, on the other hand, am but a mere and lowly human being.

    1. Oh, I'm all too human. That is why I need the goals!

  2. OMG Engie, I am HERE for this post. These are goals I can really get behind. I love prioritizing fun and also compassion. This is such a great variety of things, from homemade ice cream (you will LOVE it and will never go back, I have an ice cream maker and it's amazing) to vacations, I love this list. And compassion is a life-changing way to look at things. xoxoxo

    2. I'm excited to have most fun goals this year. Homemade ice cream is obviously the first goal I thought of this year.

  3. I love it! I love the emphasis on fun. I do think of you as a compassionate person, but I think you're kind of hard on yourself sometimes. Prioritizing fun is a way to show compassion for yourself.
That books sounds good! I'm going to see if I can get it from my library. And, Birchie and I had fun doing our buddy read of Gone With the Wind this year, so I definitely recommend it.

    1. YES! I have questions about your buddy read. How often did you check in? Did you have a timeline for a buddy read? Debrief together?

  4. Yes to fun and leaving the house as your primary goals!!!

I'm going to check out that posture video since, ahem, that's an area that needs improvement in my life.

Having your resume up to date is always a good move. Even for people who aren't planning to change jobs, you might need it to get a promotion. I'd also encourage everyone reading this to interview for a new job once a year whether you want to change or not==>that keeps the skill fresh and it's never bad to see what else is out there.

I'd be down for a buddy read! I mean, CBBC is the ultimate buddy read. I'm usually pretty spur of the moment in what I read, but let's think about it and trade titles.

    1. The posture video is HARD. The last two exercises, in particular, are impossible for me. She said it got better for her after consistently doing it for two weeks, so I'm giving it a month. I've done the video three times and so far only see a tiny bit of improvement on one of the other exercises, but I'm going to give it my all.

I teach our Careers class and do a lot of mock interviews and feedback on resumes and cover letters, so I actually do feel pretty good about my skills in that arena. But my resume hasn't been updated in 2.5 years and I tell my students to add to theirs after every semester, so I need to get to it!

I'll put you down as interested in a buddy read! I'm not sure how many I'm going to do this year.

  5. I love your focus on fun! Also, I'm glad you're doing CBBC again because I want to join this time around. You and I have a couple of shared goals: monthly dates, camping trips, and friend trips. Hope it's a great year!

    1. CBBC is on the list, but it's something I'd do anyway, so it's sort of just something to give me at least one green check at the end of the year!

  6. THE YEAR OF THE REREAD!! I love this. I also love the picture project with the 5 places. I am always so impressed by your consistency and tracking, but I also love the JOY of so many of these goals. I am so here for a year of fun, too.

    1. I know the rereads will all be 4 or 5 stars and I'm hoping that my average star rating can move up from 3.5 - 3.6. Wouldn't that be great?

  7. I love re-reading and might have to borrow this. We're going to be travelling a lot and I need light, comfortable reading. I haven't been doing much re-reading lately, but it's calling my name!

Also. Wowzers. These are some big goals. I feel like I am underselling myself but, Meh, that's okay. Will there be a year I feel quite as rigid as I used to? Part of me is so glad I'm not as tightly wound and motivated to push myself... and then I wonder if it's a bad thing? I DON'T KNOW ENGIE. And while I'm here for ALL THE GOAL POSTS (seriously love them), I will admit I feel like I'm... kinda a bump on a log in some senses. I have zero movement goals and I hate exercise. Can I punt this for another year? Why am I so lazy?? Have you finished writing that Adulting Manual yet???

    1. Rereading is the absolute best!

I hate exercise, too, friend. I really do. I just tell myself I can do anything for 30 minutes and just do it. That's how I get through dentist appointments, too.

I haven't even started the Adulting Manual yet. LOL. Maybe it needs a section on procrastination?

    1. Me, neither. I'm like a fun suck. Where fun goes to die. But this year I'm going to say yes to things and try to be compassionate and give everyone the benefit of the doubt and be FUN. I mean, it's a GOAL, right?

  9. Conspicuously absent from this list is the Goal of posting a Moby-Dick meme regularly. I am sad.

  10. I love reading others lists of goals! They are as unique as the individuals writing them. I like that you are focusing on fun and getting out of the house. That's tough to do in the winter when it's easier to just stay put. I hadn't touched my resume in 8+ years and updated it last year. It's good to have an updated resume on hand - just in case! One never knows what is coming down the path.

And ice cream! yay! That is a fun goal! I would love to be your taste tester. I love ice cream, especially homemade. My mom has an ice cream machine and makes so much ice cream throughout the year. We used to only have it on Christmas Eve and it was made by one of those old fashioned spinning ones. I have a lot of memories of helping to get snow to pack around the ice cream machine (you can also use ice but there was so much snow usually so we just used snow). It was a messier endeavor, though, so I know my mom much prefers the indoor fancy machine she has.

    1. I think updating your resume is also a good reflection of skill development and responsibilities. There's a lot of evidence that this builds confidence in the workforce/education. So while I'm updating my resume for other reasons, it's also just a useful skill to make sure you know your own value!

I feel like we made ice cream in the snow as a class project once in elementary school. We each got maybe half a spoonful from the result. Ha!

  11. So I’ve done the 1000 hours outside with my kids the past three years now and completed approx 1200 and 1100 hours the last two years respectively. If I can offer a pro-tip for meeting the goal, whether it’s 500 or 750 or 1000 or whatever hours, it’s set a daily average goal per month. I saw a chart that showed for cold climates to get to 1000 hours how many hours per day on average to do outside and it REALLY helped mentally in winter. For example, “only” having 35 hours outside in February wasn’t a failure, it was actually being ahead, as according to the plan we only needed to be outside an average of an hour a day in February to stay on track for 1000. (For 1000 hours I believe it goes average 1 h/day in January and February, 2 in March and April, 3 in May, 4 in June and July, 3 in August and September, 2 in October and November, and 1 in December, but that’s just going off the top of my head without actually checking if that math is mathing. The Jan/Feb/Mar/Dec daily hours are definitely right, it’s the warmer months I’m not as sure about.)

    1. This is a very good strategy. I had sort of divided up per day and realized 1000 hours was roughly 2.5 hours a day and that number, it turns out, is not possible for me since I work/commute for 9.5 hours a day! But now I have the numbers from last year, so I can use that to be a guide to develop monthly goals.

  12. Homemade ice cream and more fun sound like excellent goals. I enjoy hearing about your goals for the year. I want to try some date nights at new to us restaurants in our town. It’s nice that you will be visiting Michigan for a fun reason this year.

    1. It must be fun to live someplace where there are new restaurants! I think we've only had a handful of new places open around here since we moved. But, it's also nice that our small businesses are very stable.

  15. Your compassion is what drew me to you initially, Engie... (IDK details, but it was about you and Dr. BB rolling your eyes at standardized testing).

Do you think there'll be time for blog friends on your Michigan trips? Asking for a (blog) friend :)!

    1. Ha ha! In grad school before we were dating, we applied to work at a company that scored standardized testing. We went around the room to norm our scores for an essay and it was pretty obvious what was happening - it was people saying 2, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2 - and Dr. BB would say 5 or 6. LOL. The prompt was to describe your dream house and the "real" high score essays were all about their dream Aspen chalets with ski slope access. There was this essay that I still think about, though, where the kid wrote about how he wanted his dream home to be safe, free from drugs or violence, and to have a mom and dad. It was heartbreaking and honestly not badly written (I remember specific details twenty years later!), but because it didn't literally *describe* the house, it was apparently supposed to be a low score. Anyway, during this norming exercise, we were consistently the people who normed incorrectly. I don't know if it's compassion so much as being annoyed by people in power making arbitrary rules.

Yes!! I'll definitely make sure we can get together!!

  16. I also want to prioritize rereading this year! And I will buddy read with you any time, dragon books or whatever. Other than my daughter i think I've only ever done accidental buddy reads.
You are totally goals in terms of setting, uh, goals. I'm going to go through everyone's and figure out which ones to copy.
