CBBC Fall 2025: The Vote Is In!

The vote was super close.

Forms response chart. Question title: Rank the following choices from your first (most preferred choice) to third (least preferred choice). . Number of responses: .

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan won by TWO POINTS over I Who Have Never Known Men. So that's what we're going to be reading. Thank you to everyone who voted - it was fun watching all the votes come in!

This one isn't in the public domain, so place your library holds now. Mine came in in less than twenty-four hours, so I'm hoping that your library is as fast and efficient as mine was.

Here's the schedule as I see it. I'm going to give everyone a couple of weeks to find the book and then we'll start on our usual Monday schedule.

October 13: Part I - Feathers From A Thousand Li Away

October 20: Part II - The Twenty-Six Malignant Gates

October 27: Part III - American Translation

November 3: Part IV - Queen Mother of the Western Skies

November 10: Wrap up!

This gives you between 70-90 pages a week to read, which is a little more than I might normally do for CBBC, but the book is divided into four parts, so who am I to fight destiny?

Thanks once again to all who voted! Who's in for this round of CBBC?

    1. So many repeat readers. I had no idea this was such a popular book.

  3. The winner is in for a race that had no losers! I am so in. I'm going to read Men soon as well, because I want to see what all the fuss is about.

    1. It's such a good book. I'm not usually into character driven stories, but that one sucked me right in.

Not my typical read, so it'll be good for me to step outside my comfort zone. I think I'll also request Men- it sounds so different.

    1. Yay! I don't usually read a lot of books like this, either, so I'm excited.

  5. Oooh I haven't read this for a while so I'm excited. I will be missing the first two weeks of CBBC though!

  6. Okay I'm in, although I didn't vote for this one. I've never read it though, so it will be good!

    1. It wouldn't have been my first pick, either, Jenny, but I did put it out there, so I guess it's all my fault if we don't like it.

  7. I think I voted for this (LOL--you can tell it was high stakes for me!). I've never read it, so I'm really in. Thanks for leading the way again.

    1. Well, CBBC is probably the highest of the stakes! *rolls eyes* I haven't read it, either. I am excited to start!

  8. I'm pretty sure I haven't read this one (it seems familiar, but I worked in bookstores for years, way back when, so that doesn't always mean I read something), so I'll give it a try!

  9. Get ready to have your hearts broken people! I loved this book and am all in. Also really liked the movie, maybe I’ll watch that at the conclusion of CBBC.

    1. Just put on hold at my library, though I may own this…I know I USED to own it, now to search around and see.

    2. That sounds dire. I don't want my heart broken!

    3. Maybe I’m remembering wrong, but I don’t think so. I read this back in the 90s, and there’s one scene that breaks my heart just to think about. Really good though! And it’s still popular enough that most of the copies in my library system are currently checked out. Which is great!

Thanks for organizing and tallying the votes!
I feel like I voted for this one, even though I've already read it years and years ago. I'm super interested to see how it holds up because it was published at a time when there just wasn't a lot of other Asian American literature, so I'm wondering if it will still resonate. Or if I liked it because it was like, "oooh! Asian people!"

    2. So far there has been very little organization. Things will start to get real when I read and have to actually put together the posts, though.

I know what you mean about Asian American literature. It felt like for a loooong time there was nothing. I'll be interested in your take on it - it will be a very different lens than the one I have.

  11. I am under Julia and also in the same boat lol - I know I owned it at some point, but finding it may be a chore. Yay! I will read I Who Have Not Known Men at some point, but I didn't really want that point to be now.

    1. I don't know if I Who Have Never Known Men will be your jam, Allison, but I'd love for you to give it a try. I liked it so much and I think it would be a great book to have a discussion about.

  12. I've never read this book, or any of the options for this CBBC edition, but GUESS WHAT BOOK CAME IN FOR ME TODAY. Sorry for the yelling, but timing is so tricky with holds and you know I hate buying books. The instant you added this to the list of possibilities, I put it on hold (I was already on hold for the Men book, but am very far down the list so also knew I'd need to buy that one). Anyhoo, I checked my e-mail this morning and had a message The Joy Luck Club book was in and I thought: well, even if this doesn't win, I'll probably give it a go. And then I logged on and found out this was the book selection. It feels like this was destined to be, Engie!
Thanks for all your hard work pulling it together. I'm excited :)

  16. I read this years ago, but I think I'll do a reread. I had a copy, but I had to give away lots of my books when we moved. Our library doesn't have a physical book, but it does have the e-book so I'm in.

  17. Yeah....
Buhhhh .... my library doesn't have it. Shoot. Only the audiobook which I have requested but I'd preference to read. We'll see if I manage to snatch a copy somewhere. I am excited though.

  18. Oh what fun.. I would love to participate but already drowning in books at the moment. I read Joy Luck club when it first came out and it is one of my favourites too, very relateable personally... le sigh. Maybe next time around :). So cool that you do this!
