5:30am - The alarm went off and I read some of the book on my Kindle. The book is The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman and boy do I have some hot takes about this book. Just wait for that rant-filled review.
6:28am - Morning walk with Hannah. When I turned around, I saw Hannah waiting not-so-patiently for me.
 |
They're building a structure with electricity to help folks hold parties in the park. That's what you see behind her. |
7:02 am - I had to shoo Hannah out of the kitchen because she was pestering poor Zelda.
7:03pm - Breakfast.
8:04am - Got to work. Mostly on time. Not bad for a Monday.
9:46am - One of my projects for the day was to get these postcards sent around to every one of my faculty advisors. I did so before remembering that I also needed to get one and display it.
10:47am - One of our faculty members has all sorts of lovely quotes and sayings on their door. There's that news story about a teacher having to remove a sign that said "Everyone is Welcome" and I hope that my faculty member can continue to be a loving presences for their students.
11:59am - Walking to the student union. It's a beautiful day, although it's a bit windy and chilly.
12:27pm - Doing yoga in the student union!
I forgot in the one o'clock hour because I was in a meeting with a university bigwig for most of it. Imagine me just staring at the computer screen and taking myself on and off mute to answer questions.
2:52pm - I'm at work. This is a hallway at work.
3:50pm - I lost the back to one of my earrings. I am contemplating the best way for me to get my earring back home without losing it.
4:51pm - I am home from work! The girls literally cannot be bothered to greet me.
5:15pm - Does it surprise anyone that Hannah and I are on an after-work walk?
6:12pm - I did a quick workout so I was a bit late feeding Hannah. She was not pleased.
7:46pm - Regular Monday date night at the grocery store. Two hilarious stories came from this.
1) A couple fighting over ice cream flavors. "We need mint chip and a fruit." "No one needs ice cream." Pedants around the store laughed.
2) Okay. I can't tell if this will be funny to you, dear reader, or not, but I laughed a lot. The person over the intercom kept interrupting Aerosmith's "What It Takes" to demand Devonte and Sue go to register three on the north end. This happened two or three times. All of a sudden someone gets on the intercom and says "Devonte's on break."
Already this has become shorthand in our house. I asked my husband to get something from the basement and he said "Devonte's on break." He asked if I could make sure to put a card in the mail and I said "Devonte's on break." We like to imagine Devonte always refers to himself in the third person. You know what? I don't think this is coming off nearly as funny as it is. Oh, well. I wrote it all out and I'm not deleting it.
8:48-8:55pm - On a walk with Hannah after we got home and put the groceries away. All of these photos are boring or bad, so I'm just leaving this here.

"Hannah, cuddle up next to me so it looks like you aren't scared of me." "No, bitch." |
9:27pm - Filling in my line of the day journal before taking a shower and going to bed. Can I get into bed before 10? Let's hope so.

What's the best thing you did yesterday?
I will stand by for the book rant.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing that I did yesterday was to drive Doggo to our neighborhood park for a walk. For whatever reason she has been cutting her walks short at home, but if I take her somewhere, she's all about it. We drove to the park, I let her pick the route, and we ran into a couple of dogs/owners that we don't usually see, so we got to chat and catch up.
I think that "Devonte's on break" is hilarious.
Isn't it funny how dogs get bored with their own neighborhoods? Hannah definitely doesn't like it as much when we do a loop we've already done in the last few days, but gets excited when she's somewhere unusual. I guess there are just so many unique smells!
DeleteI read The Bookish Life of Nina Hill in February 2020 and have no memory at all about it. This was before I a) rated books, b) wrote little blurbs about books on my blog and IG. I remember nothing. I obviously didn't hate it or love it.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was just a pretty regular day for me, I don't know if there was a high or a low!
Yesterday was a regular day, too, but Devonte really did make it for me!
DeleteHa ha... I think it loses a little something by not being there, but I can totally see the humor in "Devonte's on break." And... Hannah. I love her "I'm not pleased" look.
ReplyDeleteNot loving your mention of the story about the teacher who had to take down "Everyone is Welcome". I mean seriously- what kind of world are we living in. So mean.
I'm also looking forward to the book rant!
I guess it's not too much of a rant, but I just feel like Abbi Waxman is an extrovert writing about things she doesn't know anything about!
DeleteDEVONTE'S ON BREAK
ReplyDeleteIf I ever meet Devonte when I'm at the store in the future, I'm going to ask him for his autograph.
DeleteI have that same 5-year diary! I started in in 2009. Still going.
ReplyDeleteOnce my husband was on a bus and the driver skipped a stop. A woman said loudly, "Damn, bus driver!" This was years ago and we still say "Damn, bus driver!" to each other frequently.
This is my second one! I love it so much and it's part of my bedtime routine - medications, teeth brushing, journal, shower.
DeleteI love these family inside jokes so much!
I think you are hilarious and I loved everything about this post! I worked at a grocery store when I was in college, and there were some hilarious capers over the intercoms! I remember a lady got on there and said, "Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Hmmm. I forgot what I was going to say." Everyone in the store was howling with laughter. I still laugh about that!
ReplyDeleteIs that adorable elephant wearing headphones your Kindle cover?
I worked at a grocery store in college, too! I don't ever remember ANY fun and games over the intercom. Obviously we took ourselves too seriously.
DeleteIt is an elephant wearing headphones. It spoke to me because it's adorable!
I enjoyed the Devonte story from the grocery store. I like those little slice of life stories that then get used as an inside joke in a relationship. Our phrase is "I'm ready to be done" which comes from a times when we were hiking in LA and took a wrong turn so had to back track and I was just so done with that hike. So now that phrase gets used all of the time to communicate a certain level of "doneness".
ReplyDeleteThe best thing I did yesterday was go outside after dinner with the boys since it was 60F. I texted our neighbors to see if they wanted to swing by with their almost-3 year old. They were on a walk so stopped by on their way home. It's really nice to have neighborhood friends. Adding a kid to the mix actually makes things better and their little boy just adores my boys since they are older than him.
It is SO NICE that we're trending towards spring. I truly am enjoying that. It hasn't really been warm enough here on a day when it's not crazy windy to eat outside, but I'm hoping to start taking my lunch outside on work days when it's nice out. That will happen soon, right?
DeleteI sure hope so!! Fingers crossed!!
DeleteDevonte is on break is funny; especially now that it's an inside joke for you, your husband and now, all of us!
ReplyDeleteNow we're all going to say Devonte's on break when we don't want to do something!
DeleteYesterday? Open-ended questions leave me blank. So I try to figure out what I did. One ‘not best’ thing was trying to go for a walk in the howling wind. We cut it pretty short, I tell you.
ReplyDeleteThe wind has been insane here, too! Every loose limb and stick in the state has come down!
DeleteI laughed out loud at "Devonte's on break". Thank you for that! My big question is: Is that barn-like building the Student Union building? Also, in that night-time photo it looks like you live near Hogwarts. That's all I've got.
ReplyDeleteThat barn-like building is a model of a one room schoolhouse that we have on campus. It's very tiny. You seem curious about the buildings in my life, so I'm going to do a post on that! There are a lot of very picturesque churches in my neighborhood (I live in the historic district), so it does sometimes feel very magical around here.
DeleteOoh, I cannot WAIT for your review of The Bookish Life of Nina Hill. I did not enjoy that book and I feel like such an anomaly! I think we might have similar opinions.
ReplyDelete"Devonte's on break" is hilarious to ME and I love that it became an inside joke for you and your husband.
Hmm... the best thing I did yesterday was sleeping in! I had Monday off work and was shocked when I woke up at 10am. I haven't slept that late in so long!
I feel like Abbi Waxman and I needed to have a talk before she created Nina.
DeleteSleeping in! We slept in until 8 on Sunday and it was Ah-mazing!
" The girls literally cannot be bothered to greet me" HAHAHAHAHA.
ReplyDeleteThis is my life. I walk in the door and my kids either give me side-eye or ignore me.
Yes, Hannah couldn't even bothered to GET UP. Zelda just lurked in the kitchen and stared at me. I see videos of dogs coming to the door and wagging their tails and asking for pets and Hannah barely lifts her head! What did I do to hurt her? LOL.
DeleteI also like the Devonte story! I think that those little stories are the funny ones. We have a lot of inside phrases that we use with our family that probably nobody else gets and when you explain them they seem kind of silly. Like we used to play a game with the dictionary where we just get the book out and one person finds a word and the others have to make up defeminations. Anyway one of the words was wah-wah, and my cousin's fake definition was the "sound that a harelip goat makes" and for some reason, of all the definitions, that one won. So now we sometimes use that word in random sentences.
ReplyDeleteBut, when would "sound that a harelip goat makes" come up in conversation? I NEED TO KNOW.
DeleteHa ha, loved that Devonte story and that he took his break! Also the early morning horizon photo. Hannah is a lucky dog to get all those nice walks.
ReplyDeleteShe is a tortured dog if you ask her! Ha! Getting a dog has been so beneficial to me in terms of getting out and about in our neighborhood.
DeleteI love "Devonte's on Break!" I think it's going into rotation now :). My nap when I got home was the best thing about yesterday!
ReplyDeleteI laughed a lot at Devonte taking a break, but more so when that break caught on to a fun avoidance trick in your own home.
ReplyDeleteBest thing I did yesterday: modeled outfits and in particular WHICH SHOES yesterday. It was the best thing not because I am a super model but because I invited the girls to take the pics/share in the laughs of what works and the faces I make when I am not quite ready for the picture.
Oh, what a fun bonding experience. I'm sure they had very strong opinions about what the best outfits were.
DeleteYesterday I made some raisin cookies using a very old recipe that my mother used to use. It was fun to taste something I remembered from my past.
ReplyDeleteALLY! RAISINS DO NOT BELONG IN COOKIES. I cannot believe you are one of those people on the raisin dark side.
DeleteI loved this post -- a day in the life, and it sounds like a good and productive day. Hannah and Zelda are both lovely! And so is your walking area. I laughed about Devonte -- don't you love expressions like that, ones that just "stick"? You may be saying that a long while! My yesterday? It was sunny and Michigan-March-warm!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's been pretty warm here. But today it's rainy and stormy and I am full on Grump about Spring lady. My feet want to be dry!!!!
DeleteI laughed out loud (quietly because I'm in the library on lunch break) about 'Devonte's on break'. I love your Kindle cover, bracing for the review. The best thing I did ... Monday? was make the appointment to get my winter tires switched earlier in the year than I've ever managed.
ReplyDeleteI was talking to a guy in my office today and he was talking about how he was going to switch out his winter tires over spring break (next week). Is it weird that I've never owned winter tires?
DeleteI'm sure I said this last month, but I'm saying it again this month: I love this idea and need to do it myself!
ReplyDeleteBest thing I did yesterday? After driving home, I poured myself a glass of wine while listening to a jazz record and watching the rain fall.
I'm going to be on the lookout for Devonte now, of course.
If you see Devonte (of course, since this was over the store intercom, I have no idea if that's how he spells it), you need to tell him that he's famous!!
DeleteWhat kind of wine do you have for breakfast with your vitamins? I love the Devonte story, that's awesome.
ReplyDeleteCrap, I have a line a day journal that my daughter gave me for my birthday, and I keep forgetting to write in it. Mostly it's about what exercises I did in the morning. BORING. I need a more exciting life. But it's really small and there's not a lot of room for more, so whatever.
Best thing I did yesterday...hmmm. At this point I'm behind in my blog reading, so it's Friday, and the best thing I did on Thursday was hear that my cousin was able to catch the cat that needed to be caught. There's a lot of detail to that story, I'll have to write it up on my blog, but rest assured that there is a happy ending and the cat is safe and cozy.
I obviously like to start each day with a nice Cab. (And/or cranberry juice.)
DeleteMy line a day journal is excruciatingly boring. Work today! Exercise class after work! Made granola. It's really cold. Oh, well. Occasionally there are very funny things in there, including the Devonte story.
Is that your Kindle cover? CUUUTE!
ReplyDeleteIs that a little moon earring? I only have one piercing and I have a star! :)
It's is my Kindle cover!
DeleteYes! I have a moon in one side and a sun in the other.
