Happy Valentine's Day

From when we went to the lights at the zoo in December.

I've heard some rumblings of discontent in the Interwebs that some of you don't like Valentine's Day. What?! Is there anything more low-stakes than this holiday? Snail mail, which is really my favorite part, candy, and wearing red. Easy peasy. If you don't want to buy a card, be like us and make your own! I will let it slide if you don't own any red clothing, but surely you have something, right? If not, I have some red heart-shaped stickers for you.

(Also, I need people to stop saying it's a "Hallmark holiday." This is not Mother's Day or Father's Day or Grandparent's Day or other national holidays made up for the sole purpose of giving Hallmark more business - which, as you know, I don't mind as a concept - but this is a feast day that goes back centuries.)

Even if you're not in a romantic relationship, there's still delicious candy! And who can say no to that?

I have a series of very boring, kind of stressful appointment today and then I'm going to go home, walk the dog, and take a very long nap.

Do you have any Valentine's Day traditions?

  1. I do not have any Valentine's Day traditions! Tonight I am going to go hang with my friend K and her daughters, which I do once a week anyway, and we are probably going to eat breakfast for dinner and will serve strawberries as our Galentines day treat! Other than that, it is business as usual, aka a myriad of soccer and lacrosse practices, and maybe an episode of Lessons in Chemistry if we have time (which we probably won't).

  2. No Valentine's traditions- I think it's tricky to have traditions for a holiday that could fall on any day of the week, and where most likely people will be going to work/school. BUT! I just so happens that my husband isn't working tonight so we're going out for a "romantic" Valentine's Day dinner- to the food court at the mall, ha ha. Well, we like the falafel place there and don't want to spend a lot of money.
I'm not wearing red, but I'm wearing my tank top that says "Love who you are" which I feel is the perfect V-day sentiment!

    1. Your tshirt is perfect!
I'm wearing red and planning on making my husband a card tonight. That's the extent of my tradition!

  3. I like elementary-school-style Valentine days: candy for all! Cards for all! I had a "Pal-entine's Day" celebration in class yesterday for my college students because they could use the boost. Will you and Dr. BB make valentines for each other? I hope you get some rest and some delight today! XOXO

    1. We will 100% make cards for each other tonight. I've been trying to think of a clever design all week.

  4. I'm having a Galentine's party on the weekend, which I am very excited about. Maybe I'll make cookies today? We shall see how the day goes.

  5. I don't mind the day, and we mark it in some way, but not a big way. I will wear something red, but that is not unusual.

    1. Ha! You do wear red regularly. You're always prepared for Valentine's Day!

  6. I'm with maya--I like the Elementary School Valentine's Day. When I was teaching, I used to buy those packs of valentines and hand them out to my students--a different set for each period. The kids got a big kick out of it. Rick and I don't even acknowledge the day, usually. Sometimes, I'll make him a heart-shaped meatloaf or something silly, but more often than not, he or I will say, "Oh, yeah. Happy Valentine's Day." For us, we focus on our anniversary, and days like this are for the amateurs. LOL

  7. I'm at school today and I FORGOT to wear red, what am I even DOING with my life. We ordered dinner from a nice cafe place that does online food for tonight and we're going to watch a subtitled movie so we'll feel all sophisticated. I sometimes send my kids chocolate, but I didn't this year, but I got heart cookies to make for when Eve comes home for the week on Saturday.

    1. Surely there's a child at your school who has a sheet of heart stickers who would share one with you?! You can't be complete red-less on Valentine's Day!!

  8. We are all decked out in hearts, had heart-shaped breakfast foods, gave candy, etc. LOVE IT. I bought a heart skirt from Target, and it is a delight.

    1. Ooooohhhh...I should find myself a scarf with hearts on it for Valentine's Day! I'm putting that down on as to-do list so I can be prepared next year!

  9. I am in the same boat as Nance. I was all for it when the kids were little, but we didn't exactly go all out. I remember once we were at an Irish dancing competition our of state that happened to be on Valentine's Day. Mini was little and she was all upset that we weren't at home to celebrate. I was like WELL THIS ISN'T CHRISTMAS. I remembered to wear red. Coach and I don't celebrate. We do more couple related things for our anniversary than we do for Valentine's Day.

    1. I guess our celebration is small, but there. I'd be disappointed if we didn't even acknowledge it, to be honest. There is a long stretch of time without "real" holidays between New Year's and Easter and I like to celebrate Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day to break up the monotony.

  10. Yay for naps.
Fun fact (er, well, gross fact?), I saw St. Valentine's actual skull last year in Rome. Talk about romantic, eh?

    1. That's actually really interesting. How do they know it's his actual skull? Off to do some digging!

  11. My only "tradition" is shopping the half-off candy on the 15th! Before I moved down here, I usually celebrated in some way with some of my good friends who were also single, which was great fun even though the word "galentines" makes me cringe. We had some good times though! Especially the chocolate brunch buffet at a fancy hotel in Boston one year.

    1. Ha! We are literally still eating candy from Christmas, so I don't know if I'll be hitting up the half-off candy, but if I happen to be in a Walgreen's who knows what I'll end up bringing home.

  12. I would have celebrated valentines day with a meal out if my MIL is not around. Kids usually do something at school but it was national presidential election day so no school. This year is not eventful and it's fine. I love the festivity around it more than the actual day.

    1. Well, no school seems like a celebration to me!

  13. I think my Valentine's day tradition is cajoling my kids to write the names in their Valentine's Day cards for their classmates. Though I was *very* pleased this year that my Husband took it upon himself to order the Valentine's for the kids.
I did wear a red sweater and volunteer at my first grader's Valentine's day party. The four year old's school does "Friendship Day", but who are we kidding?

    1. Way to pawn off the Valentine's Day card work on your husband! I don't envy parents the additional work of these types of "special days" at school. It's a lot easier for me!

  14. I enjoy Valentine's day very much. I love getting a card from T and the kids, chocolates, and maybe a small gift. The kids do little cards and write names of their peers. It's cute! yesterday I bought a dozen roses, unfastened the twine and the kids gifted a rose to each staff member at their after care and preschool. I like making people feel special, it makes me feel good.

  15. I hope your appointments weren't too bad or stressful!
We don't do a lot for V day, but usually a card. The coach surprised me with flowers, candy and a card this time though....kinda over the top, but I'm not complaining!

  16. I'm not huge on Valentine's Day since it seems very couple-centric, so I'm grateful that my best friend and her husband don't do anything for the holiday, so I get to have her all to myself. She came over for pizza and a cheesy rom-com, and it was the perfect night!

  17. I have only ever really went crazy on Valentines Day and that was the year I was living in the US. It just isnt such a big deal here in Germany. And the husband only ever did one thing on valentines day. He proposed. Because I never in a million years would have guessed it would happen that day. And now he say he can not top it so he won't even try. Ha.
