10.15 Volume - All the Thoughts

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the fifteenth day of the month is "Volume."

*****************

As of the last time the stats were updated, my county is in a "severe drought." But yesterday it rained all day, mostly a steady drip, but sometimes quite a lot coming down. I'm hoping this goes towards alleviating some of the dryness. I'm not sure exactly what the total rainfall was yesterday, but I heard some people talking about 4-6 inches. It was steady, too, not just a downpour that never sinks in.

Sunday it rained a teeny tiny bit, but by the time I walked Hannah yesterday morning the mosquitoes were out in full force. Because it's been so very dry this summer, I hadn't worried much about mosquitoes, but now they're everywhere. I will have to start paying more attention to being covered up when I go outside or have on bug spray.

My birthday is later this week and we're going back and forth on plans. We're usually not impulsive, but after I suggested a trip to Milwaukee to go to the beach and an art museum, Dr. BB suggested that we drop Hannah off with some friends for a day and go to Minneapolis or Chicago. We're still weighing our options. On one hand, we probably shouldn't spend a lot of money, but on the other hand, we haven't really done anything just the two of us since before the pandemic.

No matter what we end up doing, I will eat a cupcake. That's the really important thing.

Zelda's version of a rainy day looks like this.

Do you usually have big plans for your birthday?

  1. Happy early birthday!!!! Both of your ideas sound fun -- especially if you haven't had a getaway, just the two of you, in a long time. Also hooray for cupcakes! Do you have a specific kind of cupcake you will seek out?

We've been getting a bunch of rain lately. I usually like the rain but it makes it feel too fall-ish and I'm not ready for fall yet. This summer has gone by too fast!

    1. The local coffee shop has three regular, consistent flavors (and a flavor of the month). The three flavors are mocha, red velvet, and carrot cake. I will take a cupcake in any of the regular flavors, but mocha is my favorite. I will probably ask Dr. BB to stop at that coffee shop on our way out of town to get a fancy coffee drink (decaf, sad) and a cupcake!

  2. YES YES YES take the day trip! I can make arguments for all three of those places - assuming that the weather is good, it's prime beach time. There's always fun stuff to do in CHI. I haven't been to Minneapolis since the 90s so to me that sounds like the best option - I think you used to live there so it might be less exciting to you. But any and all of those places sound like fun.

    Happy Birthday!

    1. I think we are going to do Minneapolis! Because we have lived there, we know it will be a good time!

  3. Oh, happy birthday! I love birthdays - mine especially - and I always think that the birthday person should get super special treatment all day. Who am I kidding, all week. So I hope you have a lovely birthday, whatever you plan to do.

    1. Ha! We (I) call the seven days before and after a birthday the "birthday fortnight" and the birthday person must be celebrated hard!

  4. NGS! Happy early birthday! I'm so excited for you to take a road trip and go where ever you want and eat cupcakes. (I realize I made that plural, but you deserve all the cupcakes!) Hannah will be fine for the day.

    1. Hannah LOVES the dogsitter, so I know she'll have a good time. We're going to leave her with the sitter for a long weekend soon, too, so this will be a nice ease-in for her.

  5. Also: How did you manage to walk Hannah yesterday? If your rain was anything like ours, it was unrelenting. I was afraid Max would burst.

    1. It was only sprinkling on our morning walk, so that was fine. In the afternoon, there was about an hour break when the sun came out, so I got her out then! In the evening, she just went under the giant pine tree and glared at me because it was clearly my fault she was getting rained on. She did okay!

  6. How exciting, it's your birthday week! I'll be interested to hear about your trip, no matter which option you choose (they're all good.)
We've had a decently rainy summer (it's our rainy season so afternoon thunderstorms are common.) It's the only thing that gives us a break from the heat, so we love it. Very rare for it to rain all day here though.

    1. It's rare for us to get rain like that, too! We really needed it, though, so it was good news for us!

  7. Happy Birthday Week! I don't really do much for my birthday, but I still appreciate the day. I think it would be fun to have a big party some year. And eating a special dessert ranks high on my list (my husband usually makes me a Cherry Cheesecake - my fav; this year we were visiting my sister in South Carolina and her wedding anniversary is the same day as my birthday. We were in Charleston and celebrated with family time and a delicious PB cheesecake).

    1. Yes, we usually don't do anything, either, so this is going to be fun. It will also be nice to see if our "the pandemic is really over" mindset can translate to travel, even if it is just a short day trip!

  8. Happy Birthday Week! We don't really go anywhere far for my birthday because it's the end of April, which means it is during the school year. Boo hiss. But I like your possible ideas. And a cupcake is always a good idea, no matter what the occasion.

    1. My husband's birthday is right at the end of his semester, so sometimes we can celebrate and sometimes he's in the middle of grading and it's Not. Fun. I'm sorry you can't ever do your birthday up big!

  9. Happy birthday! Definitely must have a cupcake, along with other fun. Enjoy!

  10. Oh, I do hope you have a happy birthday! And I think planning something nice for it is in order, no matter what. Rick and I rarely do anything but go to our favourite restaurant for a really nice dinner and drinks, but that's all we actually want to do. Oh, and I pick up his favourite pie or cake, and he does the same for me, and we sing for each other before the candle is blown out and all.

I'm sure the two of you do the candle thing, don't you?

    1. We do the candle thing if it's a cupcake. If it's anything else (like a pie or cake), we do not because it's gross and spit goes onto the thing you're sharing with other people. LOL. I thought FOR SURE COVID would get everyone else on board and stop blowing out candles on cakes, but at my niece and nephew's last birthday party, they did it! I was very icked out.

  11. 4-6 inches?! Whoa! We got 2 yesterday and it partially filled our pond back up!

Happy early birthday! I am excited to hear what you choose to do. Mine is usually low key with family in Iowa or by myself here. I want to do something big for 40 though!

    1. It rained ALL DAY and for some of the time, it was a hard rain. It was enough to move the needle from severe drought to moderate drought, so I'll take it!

  12. Happy Birthday!
I don't really celebrate my birthday - it's a few days after Christmas and by then, I'm all festive'd out. A birthday seems like a good time to do something celebratory and indulgent, like a big city trip. Rain is lovely after much dryness, but I hope it doesn't rain on your birthday trip!

    1. It did not rain on our trip! It was super windy, but we couldn't have asked for better weather if you ask me!

  13. We've had some apocalyptic rain recently - a lot of major streets were flooded for a few hours during the last bout.
Happy pre-birthday! You should definitely do something fun and out of your routine so the day feels special, and go to town on that cupcake.

  16. Happy birthday! Maybe it's today? Tomorrow? Anyhoo, I hope you guys do something fun and not just your regular day stuff. You should be celebrated!

I don't usually do anything big for my birthdays (aside from Forty and Fifty) But this year I was hoping to check off a bucket list item of swimming with Manatees. Turns out I'm watching Lolo's dog that week, so it won't happen on my actual birthday, but maybe soon.

I hope your cupcake is the best one ever.

  17. When is your birthday? If it's tomorrow, you share a bday with my husband! I am glad you have some fun, special plans for your birthday! It's nice to do something extra special for your birthday. We are belatedly celebrating Phil's bday on Sunday at a pool party at his college friend's house so it will be an extra festive birthday. Our bday celebrations have been extremely lamed/understated since having kids and esp during the pandemic. We both during 40 in 2021. I had a 2 month old on my 40th so it wasn't the time for a huge party or celebration. But he really knocked it out of the park by getting me a signed photograph of John Dickerson who is a media person that I have a dad crush on meaning he's kind of old and very dad looking but I find him attractive. Plus he's really smart.

  18. I hope you have a wonderful birthday - regardless the rest of your plans, I think a birthday cupcake is a must :)

  19. Oh, happy belated birthday. I'm the exact opposite - my birthday is, well, a day. I never want gifts, or anyone to pay attention to me. I wouldn't turn down a cupcake - I just wouldn't want any kind of celebration - large or small - to happen simultaneously. ;) (I hope you enjoyed your cupcake!!!)
