Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a predetermined theme randomly chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the fifth day of the month is "Drawing." I am such a bad artist that I've started taking photos of town landmarks and putting them through an app that creates pencil drawings.

Our city has a logo that looks like this:
This logo is a bit mystifying to me. I can't tell if the leftmost icon is supposed to represent the original military fort the city is name after or it represents a water tower that people in town are proud of. The water tower lives behind the Lutheran church (you know the church - the one with the bells) and if you see a bit of parking lot in the photos, that parking is lot is the church parking lot. Below you will find two views of the tower (taken from the east and the northwest, maybe? I don't really understand cardinal directions, so it's possible I've misled you entirely).
Clear skies! Sun! The interminable rain has stopped! Woot woot! What's the closest landmark registered on the National Register of Historic Places to your house? (Honestly, it's probably equidistant from my house to the water tower and the half a million dollar house down the street for me.)
I live in Canada, so we would have different designations, but I live close to a lot of cool stuff! I'm 10 minutes from a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Grand Pre), an hour from Sambro Island Lighthouse (oldest lighthouse in North America), and about an hour from one of the first European settlements in North America (Port Royal; I grew up a 2 minute drive from the site of the original colony). But no cool water towers, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteThere are two Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in my state that are UNESCO Heritage Sites. I should really make a point of visiting them! But it's far more than ten minutes away! What an awesome perk of where you live.
DeleteYes, you definitely need to check out this water tower and the views! I'm not sure what the closest landmark is to me, but I'm sure we have at least a few... Maybe I should look into it.
ReplyDeleteI bet Cleveland has some great sites! Maybe a fun summer project to visit all of them!
DeleteWell you just sent me down a rabbit hole! So I looked on the NPS website and winnowed down the list and there are actually 60 places in Oakland on the National Historic Register! And several more in Berkeley and other surrounding towns nearby. However, I think that the closest thing to me is a Senior Center, which I run by all the time and is a very cool old building but I never knew it was a historic landmark! It's this: https://edenhousing.org/properties/the-altenheim/ Pretty cool, and thanks for inspiring me! I looked through the photos and I never realized it was so interesting.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it CRAZY when something you see every day has more history behind it than you would have ever imagined?! I love that story about the senior center and I love even more that it's used!!
DeleteHow unique! I’ve never seen a tower like that one.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. They're sort of ubiquitous around here!
DeleteWell, the nearest one to me is something called a "walking dredge," so I think your water tower is more fun! It's certainly pretty to look at.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! I had to look up what a walking dredge was and it really doesn't sound that exciting. LOL. Maybe there's something else nearby?
DeleteI was going to say that I had no idea what the closest NHR is to me, but I saw Kyria's answer and googled it. There are three historic houses in my town.
ReplyDeleteI'd be all over that water tower tour!
Apparently they are offered the first Saturday in June, July, and August, so I'm going to add it to my July calendar!
DeleteHmm, i don't know if there's anything "historic" near my part of Florida- but there are probably places down in Miami. You should definitely do the tour of the water tower! That sounds cool.
ReplyDeleteI added the water tower tour to my calendar for June!
DeleteYes, you should certainly do a tour of the water tower. I think we often don't do some of these things where we live but we might do them when we travel. In Australia we have the National Trust. The closest property to us is Rippon Lea Estate, a 19th century mansion. It is 2.6km away. Other sites closest to us are the Grand Union Tramway Junction (5.7km) and Luna Park (4.1km). We also have the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens (12km). But we are a big city, so have lots of nationally significant historical sites.
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed by all of your with UNESCO World Heritage sites just around the corner! What a lovely thing to have nearby.
DeleteOf course, I had to go too and check it out and there are 79 listings in Sacramento, the closest probably a house near the park that I frequent for walks and runs (less than a mile away). Funnily, it turns out to be a house that I have commented on a lot for its "ugliness" (mainly due to the fact that it looks 'uninhabited". The front lawn is bare, all street-facing windows are covered with bamboo shades and I've never seen a car parked in the drive way or a person enter or leave the house.
ReplyDeleteI had to go check, too, and I think the closest historical place by us is a bridge over Minnehaha Creek that is technically in Edina but not far from us.
ReplyDeleteWell, hm. Apparently it's Hoyt Park, which looks lovely and (shocker) which I've never visited. Since it's 1.6 miles from me, I'm thinking I might need to venture there this summer. The things you learn! (Also, I'm betting that the logo is really for the original fort, but the water tower is super-cool, too...)
