6.1 Hat - On a Hot Tin Roof

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the first day of the month is "Hat."

******************

I literally just complained about the snow, but it was in the sixties yesterday with thunderstorms and there's snow forecast for today, so I'm just going to quietly cower in fear over the weather over here and not talk about it again until May. If you notice that my photos go from snowy to whatever grey nonsense Hannah is posing in above this, just pretend spring in the Midwest makes sense.

Moving on.

I always thought the expression was "hat on a hot tin roof," and it wasn't until verrrrrrry recently that I learned it's actually "cat on a hot tin roof." I guess the latter does make more sense, but when you hear things as a child, they do stick with you, don't they?

Can you believe Easter is next week? It's early this year, but not crazy early. Sometimes Easter is in March. It just seems like it showed up this year, unannounced. Hey, NGS, get those cards in the mail and get prepared. Easter is coming! Why didn't you prepare better?

I like Easter. In our non-religious family, it wasn't anything special, other than my parents hid Easter baskets for us and we got to go look for them. I have fond memories of this. My husband's Catholic family, though, they do Easter right and I always have a good time at Easter brunch, so I am excited for that.

Happy April, everyone! What are you looking forward to this month?

  1. Yes, Easter is a week from tomorrow! As I've mentioned, it's not my favorite holiday, but I always hide Easter baskets for the kids (well, now just my daughter) and I also hide eggs around the house filled with jellybeans. I try!
Ha ha... hat on a hot tin roof. That really make no sense, but as you said, the things we hear as kids (or think we hear) really do stick with us.

    1. I mean, hey, finding Easter baskets was all we did when I was a kid and it was enough for me! I think your kids will definitely look fondly on their Easter mornings!

  2. Hannah looks irritated with you in this photo, yet so adorable. And patient.

At our house the Easter Bunny always hid the eggs we coloured. When we were little, our baskets were filled with the chocolates from my uncle's chocolate shop, all solid molds in the shape of bunnies, crosses, and chicks. We'd each get a 12-inch solid chocolate bunny, right in the center of the basket, and that would last well into early summer; we'd have to lay it on a cutting board and use an ice pick to break off chunks.

Still chuckling about a hat on a hot tin roof. Imagine how toasty that would feel when you put it on! Not a bad thing at all.

    1. I was doing a mini-training session with Hannah on that walk and all she wanted was the treats in my hand, so the look she's giving me is one of absolute desperation. Why was I making her stand there when all she wanted was a sweet potato?

I don't know why I thought it was hat on a hot tin roof. Like it was helping to keep the roof warm? Brains are weird.

  3. We're on a long weekend spring break trip...the forecast was perfect when we left and it's gorgeous at this very second...with an all day high winds warning and they're saying we'll lose power. Oh well, we came to have an adventure and one way or another we'll get one!

    1. I hope you never lost power! I guess it's an adventure and will always be memorable!

  4. Spring weather is BONKERS right now. I cannot stand thunderstorms, and if this is just life now, I need to move somewhere that doesn't have thunderstorms. I will take snow any day over thunder and wind. Yuck yuck yuck.

Passover AND Easter this week! So wild! I am not prepared for either and... am not sure if I will be when they arrive. We were invited to a Seder with friends, so that's fun and takes a ton of the pressure off me to keep my kid's religious/cultural background relevant and front and center. I do feel like maybe I need to start reading some Easter/Passover stories to her at bedtime, though, just to keep things fresh.

  5. "Just pretend spring in the Midwest makes sense." If you insist... We were supposed to get 90 mph winds last night, but they just stopped in Rockford. We are extremely grateful.
My birthday is this month, so there's that. I am also looking forward to seeing green grass. I think I mentioned that in my last comment to you. It's the little things..🤣

    1. I hate the whiplash in temperatures. It's so exhausting to know how to dress and it irritates my bad leg!

  7. It snowed here several times in the last few days, and now it's raining. I forget how much I dislike the transition from winter to spring. I complain about winter, but the cold and the white do make things look...pretty. And now it is just MUD for the next few months.

    1. Yes. I actually think spring is my least favorite season because it's grey, rainy, and muddy. I mean, sure, life grows and whatever, but it's really far down on the list. I won't need to bundle up as much, but now I have to check to see if I need an umbrella and/or rainboots all the time!

  8. Easter is my least favorite holiday!!! I just can't ever get really into it. I probably commented this last year, so sorry if I'm repeating myself, but I blame it on the fact that when I worked in the hospital for over 10 years, I ended up having to work Easter Sunday every year for at least 5 years in a row (when the boys were little). It's not a "legal holiday" at the hospital, so it's not in the rotation mix for nurses where we at least were guaranteed every other year off. And it just happened to fall on my weekend to work (I always worked every other weekend) for many years, ironically. Anyway, we never developed any big traditions surrounding it as a result, or I should say, it was stressful to me trying to fit the "traditions" in around me having to work (i.e. hiding easter baskets... when are the kids supposed to open the easter bunny baskets, if mom leaves for work at 6:30 am and doesn't get home until after 8:00 p.m??) Also, no one in my family likes ham, and my husband didn't grow up with any of the traditional American Easter traditions, of course, being Mexican, so he could care less too about most of it... which always put more pressure on me to feel like I had to "carry the Easter traditions".... ANYWAY, just not a big fan to this day. Haha. (Though we did the normal brunch stuff when I was a kid and I liked that, but it's been a long time now.) I tried last year to do an Easter dinner, church, dress up clothes, the whole thing, and everyone seemed kind of meh about it and I just felt kind of tired and sad by the end of the day, so I'm seriously considering scratching everything this year and like, going to a movie next Sunday with the family or something. haha.

    1. You do not need to defend your lack of Easter spirit to me! It's a completely secular holiday to me, so I'm not really one of its biggest defenders. One of the reasons I like it is that it's on a Sunday, so there's no expectation that we'll spend the night and it's a really short celebration. I mean, I'm giving it favored holiday status because you don't spend a lot of time with family for it! If you want to do something for Easter, rock on, but if you'd prefer to just go to the movies and order Chinese, that's great, too!

  9. Easter just makes me feel sad, for reasons I haven't quite explored. Maybe it's because it was such a big part of my life as a child, especially growing up in the church, and now it's just any old day but there is also so much happening on IG on that day. We don't really do anything as a family at Easter anymore.

In April, I'm excited for the Taylor Swift concert and puppy-sitting my fur-siblings while my mom and stepdad are away on vacation! YAY!

    1. What happens on Instagram on Easter? I feel like I'm really missing out on a cultural movement because I'm busy doing dumb family things!

I'm so excited for you to go to the Taylor Swift concert! I can't wait to hear about the spectacle of it all!

  10. There are so many phrases that I've screwed up in my life, it's incredible how I've made it this far. :)
I thought it was Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. No? Hit Tin? See, I'm always confused.
Hannah looks none too pleased. Is it because she's by the Slow sign? Or because Mom keeps jinxing the weather? 😜

  11. I'm looking forward to Easter holidays with the family at my parents, but before we go we'll go to the Good Friday service ... first one at our new church. Hopefully you'l start to get some good weather soon.

  12. Easter. Meh. I'm glad it's a good holiday for you, though, and that that has occurred through your husband's family. I had similar experiences to Kae - worked, never managed to get home, etc. For me now, since I don't do anything religious, it's really just another weekend. I love - LOVE - reading about others' love for holidays, though. Knowing that people like celebrating special days - and that they are celebrating them - makes me happy. :)

    1. Also! Hat on a hot tin roof - LOL. I am the queen of misheard/misstated phrases. There is a whole site with merchandise about incorrect song lyrics. I've done nearly all of them. And, for me, it spilled over into pronunciation of long words I'd only read (early reader). Adolescence is the classic, and my parents will not. let. it. die. :)
