5.1 Hat - Dream Getaway

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the first day of the month is "Hat."

******************

What's your dream winter getaway? I always dream about being on a beach on a deck chair, wearing a sunhat, reading a murder mystery novel, with the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. In this dream, I am alone and there is no one else on the beach with me. I also don't have to worry about sunscreen, itchy sand, or the threat of high tide taking my prized beach spot.

I have been attempting to recreate some of this dream this winter. The warmth of the greenhouses at the botanical gardens I visited, reading a book under a blanket alone in my house, sometimes playing ocean noises on a white noise machine.

  1. Heat would be involved for sure. I live cold 9 months of the year. Sunscreen is my nemesis. I hate putting it on and hate the sensation of wearing it, so I appreciate in this dream world there is no need for sunscreen (or high tides).

    1. I mean, if you're going to dream, dream big and pretend you don't have to worry about sunburn.

  2. We used to like to go north (not very far in our case) to a cottage in the woods and go snowshoeing.

    1. Yes, we've been snowshoeing a time or two. I guess I just don't like the actual driving to someplace snowy part of that experience. But I do like being outside in the winter with fresh snow.

  3. I love a good tropical beach vacation in the winter. It's been a while - since 2019! - but that is my favourite thing. I love a warm sunny locale, preferably with palm trees.

    1. Yes, I prefer to keep it a dream, though. Actually GOING places isn't as much fun for me. Ha!

  4. Dream winter getaway is to a ski resort where I can ski and eat delicious food and drink delicious wine and lounge by a crackling fire with your same mystery novel when the ski day is done. The weather would ideally be perfect: snow every night, but not more than an inch or two. Sunny and right around 30 degrees. I also would not need sunblock and there would be no lines on the lifts and the ski hills would be empty.

    1. Oh, yes. Other people can ski while I read my book by the fireplace. That sounds divine.

  5. I like your winter dream and want the same one. I'll just go to a different empty beach so we don't bother each other.

    1. Well, you can be on the other side of my beach if you like. But we won't talk to each other, okay?

  6. The beach is awesome! We used to take a long weekend every winter but then COVID and now all of my husband's PTO time goes to Boy Scouts so whomp whomp. Once he's done with Scouts he's going to make up all of that lost beach time to me.

I could of course take vacations on my own but I really don't want to be away from the fam and all of the expense and hassle of travel doesn't really feel worth it when it's just me. You already know my compromise==>I make day trips on weekends and try to go away somewhere that I can drive to once a month when the rest of the fam is at Boy Scout camp.

    1. Yes, your day trip idea is so wonderful. I might make a list of things to do within a few hours of my house to start doing some excursions this summer.

  7. Our trip to Mexico was basically my ideal getaway - warm weather, sunshine, good food, a steady flow of margaritas, and nowhere to go/nowhere to be. My pre-kid self probably would have wanted more adventure out of a vacation but post-kid Lisa is happy to just soak up some vitamin D and read a good book!

  8. DEFINITELY tropical. Although I will say, we did Disney in the winter a few years ago, and it was pretty ideal.

    1. Disney is NEVER going to be ideal for me, but I can see how kids would like it and that could make it fun.

  9. A few years ago I went to Los Angeles in February and loved it. I've been to Hawaii 3 times, but never in the depths of winter. That does seem like the perfect time to go, however, especially if you live somewhere where winter means more than it does in sunny California. I like how perfect your dream is.

    1. Yes, I bet it doesn't have the same resonance for people who live in warm-weather climates. For those of us who are still looking at two and half months of cold, this time of year seems endless!

  10. One local thing I liked to do, when I lived in Massachusetts, was to go to a greenhouse in the winter; the warm, humid air and the flowers were just like magic when it was so cold out and the air was so painfully dry.

    1. Yes! Going to the botanical gardens a couple of weeks ago was absolutely divine. I was warm! Sweating, even! Bring June soon!

  11. That sounds like it could possibly be a reality. Aside from the empty beach. I hope you get it sooner than later; you must be tired of winter!
The photo of the Botanical Gardens looks just like the Butterfly Conservatory in Key West. (I'd hoped that was where you were!)

    1. Eh. I like the dream better than the reality of traveling. I'm a homebody through and through.

That photo was taken at the Botanical Gardens in Madison. It was so nice to go there in the middle of winter and I might make it an annual tradition!

  12. At one time I would have said my dream getaway was a tropical beach. But now that I live in a tropical climate, I want to go on a trip to the Southwest. I would hike or run on trails all day, and then relax in a cozy hotel with that same murder mystery at night. But if someone gave me a beach getaway vacation for free, I would take it!

    1. We did a weekend getaway in Duluth, Minnesota one fall. We rode our bikes all day and collapsed into our little cabin with its hot tub at night. It was really delightful, so I can definitely see the appeal of your vacation.

  13. I would love a beach getaway where you don't need to worry about sunscreen, sand and high tide? sounds fantastic. sunscreen especially I find a real pain, and you can't really getaway without it usually. Can I add in some good food and some walks/hiking with stunning scenery and safe wildlife?

    1. Sure, you can add your hikes and great scenery! Those are ideal elements to add to the dream.

  14. My dream winter getaway is to get out of Michigan winter! But this year, it has felt OK to be here -- we've hardly had any snow or frigid temps, apart from a very short spell at Christmas. Of course, it's only March 2. One never puts winter away in Michigan till mid-May! I suspect you know that well.

I'm so glad I found your link again -- I'd had it and lost it; now it is bookmarked. I love your challenge. And in your comment (thanks for coming by) you said you were a Spartan too? When and what did you study?

    1. I am originally from Michigan (western Michigan - north of Grand Rapids a bit). I was not a Spartan, but two of my best friends from high school were, so I visited a fair amount in the late 90s/early 2000s.

  15. Hey, I recognize that place! :) The greenhouses hit on it for me, too. And get this - there is one near my office! Apparently I can just go in there and... sit. And work, if I want. Huh. The things you learn! I would love your sand-less, sunscreen-less, and can we make it gusty-wind-less, too? beach trip. Without the travel. We'll all just be far, far from each other - would that work? :)
