4.18 Winner - A Muzzle Full of Snow

Bestest Friend and I are doing a podcast project. Every day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the eighteenth day of the month is "Winner."

****************

On Thursday, it snowed all day long. The public schools had already canceled on Wednesday afternoon and it was predicted to be cold, windy, and snowy. Well, Dr. BB canceled his classes and we just hunkered down and had a bit of a mid-week vacation day.

Hannah, for her part, is the real winner when we're both home all day AND there's snow outside. Her morning started with me crouched down beside for her fifteen minutes of restorative petting and Dr. BB sneaking her extra treats when I wasn't looking.

On our afternoon walk, she thoroughly enjoyed running around like a maniac in the snow and rolling around in it.

Unfortunately for her, after about half an hour, my coat was also caked in snow and I decided we should head back inside before it started melting through my coat.

Hannah's best life is winter life.

What's the weather like where you are? Do you also have a drying rack set up in your home just for wet weather outerwear?

  1. My dog lives her best life when it snows. She loves to eat it and then she'll get snow zoomies. The only time that I've seen her not like snow is last winter when we got about two feet of snow all at once. Something about the snow being as tall as her seemed to freak her out and honestly I can't blame her.

    1. Hannah likes snow as long as it isn't too cold or too wet. She's a Goldilocks with the snow! I feel like your dog is a better sport in many ways! But doggy zoomies in the snow is just the best thing to see.

  2. I am similar to Hannah, where I actually love running around in the snow, especially when I can come back inside and dry off and warm up. However, I now live in the SF Bay Area and we don't get that kind of weather very often! But my parents still live in the same place I grew up, where we had to do a lot of shoveling and had days off of school. I would say that I was glad we had no school, but see comment above re shoveling; it was not all hot cocoa and games! Currently it has been lows in the 30s and highs in...the 50s or low 60s but next week our highs will be in the 40s. That is about as cold as it gets here in the winter on most days! It's just cold enough for a beanie in the morning but not so cold that your nostrils freeze, like they do in the midwest.

    1. Lows in the 30s must feel SO COLD when you're not used to it. We went to SF one summer and I had assumed it would be warm and it was NOT and I was so cold the whole time we were there - it was definitely cooler there than it was in Wisconsin over the summer!

My secret is that I don't really mind shoveling. I don't LOVE it if we have to be somewhere and we have to hurry with the shoveling, but a leisurely shoveling on a weekend morning is pretty fun.

  3. Rex's best life is winter life as well, and happily for him, we are getting snow and really, really cold temperatures this week! He's going to be one happy pup.

    1. Rex is definitely made for winter. I'm so happy he's living his happy life.

  4. We've had an uncharacteristically warm and snowless winter here. Yesterday, we had some lake effect snow showers, but it was hard pellets, not really flakes. And it was COLD. We're rebounding today into the forties, with fifties tomorrow. I hate winter, always have: so much inconvenience in every way with the bundling up, the poor driving conditions, the shovelling, the struggle to keep warm, the limits on my walking outdoors. I'm glad Hannah gets some Joy from it.

    1. I can generally keep my spirits up about winter until late March. People start posting photos of their flowering plants while we're still getting snowfalls and I get bitter. I like the way the world looks when it's covered with fresh snow and I love how excited Hannah gets for snow, so I'm not entirely anti-winter, but it does get old long before it gets over. I'm super jealous of your 50s, but if we got that warm, all the snow would melt and then I'd be grumpy about how grim the landscape looks.

  5. We have hooks in the laundry room where everyone throws their wet stuff. I sort of hate winter for just this reason. But I am trying SO HARD not to be grumpy about it because seasons are short.

    1. Well, fall is short and spring is non-existent. It seems like winter in Wisconsin is quite long, imo!!

  6. Aw, Hannah! I'm glad she had such a good day (i love the thought of you petting her and Dr. BB sneaking her treats.) Good thing Hannah isn't a Florida dog- we're supposed to get temperatures in the upper 80s the week (ugh, ugh, ugh.)

    1. I would DIE if I had to face upper 80s right now. My body would NOT be ready for it. I hope you're able to get out before it gets that hot for your runs.

  7. We had snow which has been followed by a fairly cold spell. I am not a Hannah.

  8. We haven't had much snow this winter, but got the perfect amount today - not too hard to shovel, but enough the kids could sled.
We have a furnace/storage room where I hang coats/snowpants. But my FAVOURITE hack for drying winter gear is our over-the-heating-vent contraptions that look like giant plastic aerated spikes. Each drying apparatus has about 8 prongs, so I put a mitten or a boot or hat over each prong and the warm, blowing air goes right into them. They are amazing! If people don't have floor registers, you can buy ones that plug into the wall that blow heated air (kinda like a blow dryer). It's a gamechanger with small kids who go through so many hats/coats/boots/mittens on a snowy day.

    1. I can't even imagine how many mittens and hats you have to get dry. It also sounds lovely to have a nice warm hat to put on right before you go outside.

  9. We continue to have sixty and sunny weather. Well a day or two of rain. I know the grass is always greener, but I'm feeling a little jealous that Hannah gets to frolic in the snow. We're rounding to the end of February and I've kind of given up hope for snow.
Our snow stuff always just gets hung up in the downstairs bathroom.

    1. I think I'll take the snow right now, but in April I'll be jealous of everyone's warm weather when we're still getting flurries!

  10. Awww....Hannah must love snow days! Extra petting and treats? Running around like a maniac? Sounds perfectly lovely.
I think you know already that I don't have a drying rack for winter coats. I don't even own a winter coat! It's pretty much summer here already with the a/c running!

    1. Sometimes I'm envious of people who don't have to have as many types of clothing as we have, but then I remember I sort of like snow and would miss dressing like the Abominable Snowman sometimes.

  11. I want to be like Hannah, but I'm not... although I have embraced winter more now that I have kids and we can do things like go sledding. Plus we live in a great neighborhood for sledding - we can go to a decent hill that is only 1.5 blocks away! I am missing a huge snow event this week while I"m in Chicago. We might get over 20" of snow... Daycare is closed today, I imagine it will be closed tomorrow, too. I'm feeling pretty bad for my husband as he's juggling work and 2 young kids. :( So I'm really not team winter today!

    1. We were supposed to get some of that snow, but it seems like all we're really getting is sleet and ice. I hope you're staying safe in Chicago!

  12. Hannah is living her best life! I love it. I think it would be really hard to live in a cold climate and have a dog that hated snow.

It's already starting to get hot here in Florida, although we had an uncharacteristically cold weekend which was nice! Now I just get excited anytime the weather stays in the low 70s!

    1. Yeah, Hannah really only likes a particular range of temperatures from about 25 - 70, though, so she's unhappy because it's too warm or too cold A LOT of the year. Ha! I feel her, though. I can dress for cold, but she can't take off her fur when it's hot.
