Bestest Friend and I are doing a podcast project. Every day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the eighteenth day of the month is "Winner."
****************
Some of you may recall the Great Chicken Encounter of 2022 in which my darling husband gave the cat some chicken when I was out of town and Zelda, who had never had human food before, determined, naturally, that human food is the best food and became an addict who begs for table scraps all the damn time now. I'm obviously not bitter about this mistake AT ALL.
Anyway, we're pretty diligent about making sure she doesn't get human food, but it's a struggle. If there's any food on the dining room table, someone has to be in there supervising it, which can make things a bit of a struggle if there's also food somewhere in the kitchen. Zelda regularly sits at the table eyeing the food like so:
She did it, you guys. I left the dining room for ten seconds when I thought she wasn't paying attention and she got on the table and started scarfing down some popcorn.
Zelda is your winner of the month. Human food is delicious, you know.

Too funny! And look at those eyes. She's giving Hannah a run for her money.
ReplyDeleteAlso...you might sound *slightly* bitter about the Great Chicken Encounter of 2022?!
*whisper* ...maybe a tiny bit bitter about the Great Chicken Encounter of 2022.
DeleteI didn't realize cats did this! I know that dogs usually eat food if it's left alone but I always though cats preferred more liquids than solid food haha! I'm lucky that my dog doesn't touch our food..I can leave it sitting on the couch beside her and she won't do anything to it.
ReplyDeleteOh, Zelda wasn't like this until she had to put on a diet. I think she's honestly a little/a lot hungry all the time now and she's definitely changed into a food motivated creature like no other. Our dog generally leaves people food alone, but not the kitty!
DeletePopcorn??? That's a new one! Since we don't eat meat, our poor cats are deprived of that sort of human food. But our calico will try all sorts of things like peanut butter, tofu, potato chips... I'll let her try them, but she doesn't eat much of it. Obviously cat food is more delicious to her.
ReplyDeleteYes, we don't eat meat at home and only cook chicken for the dog. It was a huge strategic mistake to let her try it in the first place and cats have memories like no other, so now she thinks ALL people food must be this delicious.
DeleteYou never know about cats, but this is not usual behaviour in my experience.
ReplyDeleteHer behavior definitely became more food-motivated when we had to put her on a diet. We've discussed it with the vet and apparently it's pretty normal for cats who are weight-controlled diets.
DeleteWhile I love both cats and dogs equally, I have to admit that cats have certain advantages. A dog might be able to reach the edge of the table, but it can't jump up on it. A cat can be wherever food is in a heartbeat. I bet she really enjoyed the popcorn.
ReplyDeleteShe's so quiet! When she was a tiny baby, she wore a collar with a lot of bells on it so we can see when she was coming because she was an aggressive hunter. Maybe we should bring the bells back!
DeleteI'm reading the book "Socks" by Beverly Cleary right now which is about a cat named Socks that gets to eat human food - until his humans decide he is gaining too much weight. So Zelda is giving me strong Socks vibes!
ReplyDeleteOscar used to be so interested in human food and she would like stalk you while you were eating. But she has lost interest in it now! When she's with us, Phil does share cheezits with her, which he breaks into really small pieces for her. It's a very sweet tradition. She also tends to get some tuna when I have tuna sandwiches.
Awwww...cheezits!! That's such a sweet image. It probably doesn't hurt if it's just an occasional treat, right?!
DeleteOh, Zelda! Who could resist that face? But popcorn is an interesting choice. Did she just take it because that's what was there, or do you think she actually liked it?
ReplyDeleteI think it was just there so she took her opportunity. Hard to tell if she liked it since she probably only had one or two kernels before I came running in to yell at her!
DeleteOMG, your cat is adorable. ❤️
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! She definitely knows it!
DeleteZelda wants to try it all now. My female cat, Marlowe, goes nuts when we get the butter dish out. I've never given her butter, and my husband refuses to give either cat any table food, ever. I have no idea why she's a Butter Fiend. Was Zelda's popcorn buttered?!
ReplyDeleteNo butter! I made it on the stovetop with coconut oil and popcorn salt. I can't imagine it was delicious, but at least she was able to try some, I guess.
DeleteExcellent taste in snacks, Zelda.
ReplyDeleteYou are not helping, Kae!
DeleteSeriously, look at that face. Just the right amount of cuteness to overlook the misdemeanor. It must be a bit annoying though to have to be so vigilant.
ReplyDeleteI mean, this behavior is our fault, so we can't be too mad when she's naughty!
DeleteHa! Like a regular little dinner guest at the table.
ReplyDeleteIt's LOVELY when she's polite and keeps her paws off the table because then it's exactly like she's a house guest!
DeleteHa. The food stare. I've seen it from (other people's pets) LOL but I am a bit surprised that Zelda will eat popcorn....
ReplyDeleteShe'll try anything at least once! Not a picky girl, our Z.
DeleteOh Zelda. That face!! She's ruined and we can all blame your sweet husband....I too would be bitter!
ReplyDeleteWe had a boxer, Cocoa who was a notorious Counter Surfer. Nothing was off limits if you turned your head.
Fortunately, Hannah the Dog doesn't seem to care much about human food. If we had two little beggars, they'd probably collaborate and I'd lose my mind.
