Uniform or uniformity?

Every year on the anniversary of our wedding day, I force Dr. BB to take a photo of us to post on social media. Some years it's the only photo that the two of us take.  On Tuesday, I published this year's photo. And the more I thought about it, the more I thought it seemed familiar.

And then I laughed because on our fifth anniversary, we took a very similar photo in which I was wearing the same basic outfit. Consider:

2013 v. 2022.

Oh, jeans, a grey sweater, and a scarf?  I think you have stumbled onto my Midwestern springtime uniform.  My uniform shifts as the season shift, but I'm surprisingly consistent in the basic look.

Spring: See above. The scarf and sweater and easy layers to take on and off because you just never know what the weather will be like on any given day.

Summer: A dress and Jockey Skimmies.  Generally I also wear a lightweight scarf*. It's basically like wearing pajamas all day. If I have to go into a highly air-conditioned place (like my office), I may wear some slacks and a shirt, but I try to just wear dresses.

Fall: See spring.

Winter: See fall and spring, with the addition of SmartWool baselayers.

*I wear a scarf a lot because my neck has a lot of deep wrinkles and grooves and I'm super self-conscious about it. Also, I'm always cold and a scarf helps keep my temperature regulated.

Do you have a uniform? Is it seasonably dependent?

Do you force your partner to take photos on a particular day or at a particular place?

  1. I think you guys are improving with age!
That's pretty funny- i just wish Dr.BB had been wearing plaid in the second picture. i wear the same things all the time- AND I wear a uniform to work (well, it's a required shirt and pants of my choice, but I wear the same style pants every day.) Now that it's summer, if I'm not in my work clothes I'm in shorts and a tank top. I don't branch out much.

    1. Dr. BB STILL has that same flannel shirt. Ha! The next time he wears it, maybe I'll try to recreate the exact same photo.

  2. Spring and fall are most unpredictable for apparel. In winter, I bundle, and in summer I wear shorts and tees. One never has to remind Sue to take pictures. She pretty well documents our days. You will see more if this on tomorrow’s post. 😀

    1. Oh, I take photos almost every day, but I rarely take photos of the two of us. Mostly the dog and the cat doing adorable things!

  3. I love your "uniform" - it suits you perfectly! Have you ever read I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron? I never think about my neck until I see photos of myself and realize it looks like an old tree trunk.

    1. I've never heard about that book, but you better be sure I'm adding it to my TBR now!

  4. Our "thing" is taking daily selfies with the dog before her lunchtime walk. It started as a pandemic thing and two years later it's a "because that's what we do" thing. My husband has joked that it's an exercise in seeing how many days in a row he can wear the same shirt.

    1. Oh, that's so sweet! I would never be able to get my husband in on that, but maybe the dog would let me take selfies with her on our lunchtime walk.

  5. Any photos we take are done by force, LOL. But my husband and I definitely have a similar look -- and in many cases, my husband is wearing the EXACT same button down. I think we have multiple photos over many years where he is wearing that same shirt. I tend to wear the same thing, too -- jeans and boots and a burgundy cardigan is a recurring theme!

    1. It's just easy to have something you know works for you! A burgundy cardigan is interesting to me - mine are exclusively grey or black, so maybe I need to branch out.

  6. I don't have quite as "uniform" a uniform as you do, but I definitely like the idea of simplifying that way, and am trying to pare my wardrobe down to the basics of what I like, so I don't have to think about what to wear. So much easier that way!

    1. It is true that I rarely spend much time in front of my closet trying to figure out what to wear. It's always the same thing!

  7. Hey, you like what you like! I think that's so fun. :)

I don't really have a uniform, unless we're talking about the loungewear I wear when working from home haha. If I don't have a meeting where I'm going to be on camera, it's loose-fitting shorts and a bookish tee for me!

    1. I have a real problem with shorts and don't really own any, other than for working out. I just get too much chub rub and prefer a dress with some Skimmies to help protect my delicate thighs. Ha. Maybe I'd change my mind if I lived in a warmer climate, but I suspect I'd just invest in more sundresses!

  8. I look so, so silly wearing a scarf. I have a short neck. I love how they look and, since I am cold, they would be a great practical addition to my wardrobe...but every time, it just looks silly. That said, I do wear some slouchy turtlenecks and they look slightly less ridiculous (but still ridiculous) on my neck.

I LOVE the idea of a uniform (I wish my kids had uniforms for school; it would make getting them ready in the morning so much easier).
In the winter I wear black or blue jeans most days with a long-sleeved sweater. A dressy knit sweater if I'm going out/going to be on a work call; I stretchy athletic sweaters if I'm lounging at home. I also get into my pajamas as early as possible.
Lots of dresses in the summer. But I think my fall - winter - early spring wardrobe is the most consistent of just jeans and a sweater.
Love the anniversary pictures - what a great tradition!

  9. Great photos and I also think you two are aging very very well! My husband LOATHES photos. So we have very few together. He will tolerate candid photos of him with the kids - usually. I get the best photos of him at the lake, like last summer I got some good pics of him catching a fish with our son's cars-themed fishing rod. He will put up with professional photos once a year so I am trying to make those happen in the fall each year.

I also have a uniform, too. My color pallette tends towards fall/winter colors, like navy, eggplant, black, etc. I will sometimes wear a pop of color but it's not typical for me.

  10. Love to see the photos of you too... but yeah, it's the same over here... I take a lot of photos, but I have to beg for a photo with Jon. Why is that?

I definitely have a uniform: jeans and basic shirts and cardigans. I don't need to use scarfs very often, but I do have some for the cooler months! ;)

  11. Oh, my goodness - that is too funny! You are both aging delightfully well, by the way. I suspect the same thing would happen with me, but I so rarely take pictures of myself (or allow them to be taken) that I don't honestly know. :)
I've written about my 'uniform' before, but it's pretty much the same year-round: leggings/yoga pants/joggers (only in summer, too lightweight for winter), oversized shirt (always long-sleeved) over a t-shirt (casual on weekends and most days in summer; gray/white/black). Layers/weight vary per season. Seriously boring. Oh, and gray/white/black for most everything, with a few exceptions for cobalt blue and forest green. :)
