If I get skin cancer, it will obviously be on my feet. I wear sandals and flip-flops all summer long and what with regular walks with the dog and errand running, the tan lines on my feet are something special. But I take care with my face and wear a sunscreen under my daily lotion that also contains SPF protection. Since I'm now well and truly entrenched in my 40s, I recently decided that I would find a sunscreen that I love after years of settling for just whatever was on sale at Walgreens when I ran out of what I was currently using. Here are the results.
Cerave AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 30 ($12.19 for 3 ounces at Target)
Pros:
Easily available at drugstores
Relatively inexpensive
Does not irritate my skin, including the eczema on my hands
Cons:
Does not sink into skin particularly well, leaving a white residue that occasionally stains clothing
Sweats off like crazy during the summer if you start to glisten
Must be put on twenty minutes before makeup application unless you want your makeup to be bumpy
Overall:
I used this in my 20s and 30s and I still think it's a good product for the price. Now that I've tried fancier sunscreens and know that there are other options out there, though, some of those cons bother me a lot.
Pros:
Scentless
Perfect weight - it was just a slight bit oily at first, but it sank right in to my skin and felt like it moisturized
No white residue
Great primer for wearing makeup
Cons:
It's cost is ridiculous
It's made in Japan, so it hasn't gone through the rigorous FDA approval processes
The packaging makes it challenging to use all the sunscreen - I had to get out a pair of scissors and cut away at the top to get to the product at the bottom
It's hard to find to purchase - I'm nervous of buying skincare products through Amazon (who knows how old they are?), but it's not available at Sephora or any drug stores in my town - recently it's even hard to find it on Amazon
Overall impression:
I love this sunscreen, but the cost and difficulty of obtaining it are honestly big factors. I felt like I was ordering it every two weeks and maybe that's okay investment for long-term health and vanity, but I'm not sure.
Pros:
UVA/UVB protection (both!)
Great for folks with challenging skin issues - it did not irritate the eczema on my hands when I was applying it
Not greasy
Cons:
The smell is medicinal, although once it is rubbed into the skin, I didn't notice it
If I thought the price of the Cancake was ridiculous, this is more than twice as expensive
Overall impression:
A perfectly fine sunscreen and much better than what I was buying at the drugstore. If I'm going to spend that much money, though, I'd rather get the Cancake.
Supergoop! Glowscreen Sunscreen SPF 40 ($36 for 50 milliliters at Sephora)
Pros:
Slight tint will make you look less like a ghost on Zoom calls
Do not need an additional moisturizer
Cons:
Smells absolutely disgusting and that smell will linger all damn day
Made my chin break out during the first week of usage
Slight tint looks ridiculous in person if you are a pasty white person
The crazy price is the exact same exorbitant amount as the EltaMD
Overall impression: This sucked terribly and I felt obliged to finish the tube even though it smelled awful and the tint was maddening, especially since I wasn't wearing makeup to cover it up. Also, that tint made its way onto masks, my yoga mat, and everywhere else that incidentally touched my face. Thumbs way down.
Supergoop! Superscreen Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 40 PA+++ (
$38 for 50 mL at Sephora)
Pros:
Goes on cleanly with no white residue
Moisturizes
Cons:
The smell is absolutely terrible - the smell lasts all day
Leaves an oily residue - this lasts all day
Overall impression: I got this as a free sample from Sephora and thank goodness I didn't buy a whole container. The smell was incredibly off-putting and I'm super pleased that I was able to wash it off at the end of the day and know that I never had to smell it again.
Overall winner(s):
In general, I try to buy the Canmake. It's perfect for my skin and I like how lightweight it is. However, it's hard to find. In a pinch, I just go back to CeraVe, although I used some points from Sephora to recently help me finance the EltaMD recently when my Canmake was running low.
What's your daily sunscreen? What are your requirements for what makes a good sunscreen?
I just had a spot removed from my head this morning. They’ll let me know in a few weeks.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed for some good news!
DeleteFor me, I want something that is a mineral sunscreen, doesn't smell, blends in well and is easy to apply. I use a tinted moisturizer by beauty counter that has SPF protection. I have also bought a mineral sunscreen that you can spray on from beauty counter. I remember it being expensive, but worth the price since it was so easy to put on. I will also use my kids' sunscreen. I was using babyganics, which has a squirt nozel thing which means the sunscreen is fairly thin which is ideal for little kids. But I bought a different brand last summer that I heard good things about - Blue Lizard. And then Will got an allergic reaction to it which is bizarre because it's mostly zinc oxide! I am fairly certain we put babyganics on his last summer and had no issues so we will go back to that. I'm always paranoid that my kids are going to get burned, especially the older one who has white blond hair. He tans surprisingly well, though!
ReplyDeleteI have tried the Elta stuff for myself after hearing a podcaster say she liked it and I did not care for it. I don't know if I had the same kind that you bought but I found it hard to rub it in before applying make up!
It feels like the perfect sunscreen is a unicorn and is so different for everyone. I read such good things about Supergoop, but I just did not like it. Everyone's skin and scent reactions are so different!
DeleteI hate that white ghostly look from sunscreen. I tend to not wear it unless it is included in my foundation (it is). This is a mistake, my face, chest, hands have a lot of sun damage. I need to get better about it. I recently bought some CC cream (color correcting) that has sunscreen in it, and I like that. I may give your CANMAKE a try. I do wish there were a way to know how old it is online. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI wish the Canmake sunscreen were easier to find. That would really make it the PERFECT sunscreen as far as I'm concerned!
DeleteDuring the winter, I wear a CC cream that contains a 50 SPF. It's from It Cosmetics and it's called Your Skin But Better. I love that name. When spring springs, it feels a bit heavy though, so I switch to putting on Neutrogena 50 SPF, I think it's called Face Sheer or something like that. It's such a nice fast-absorbing sunscreen. Then I put a BB cream over top that is lighter than my CC cream, but contains no sunscreen. I hate a heavy greasy sunscreen, which is why I like the Neutrogena.
ReplyDeleteI normally use a neutrogena moisturizer that is 30 spf. When I'm north and out more in the sun, Neutrogena 70. (However, I did note that it stained the inside of my swim suit orange, although it doesn't look it.) Or Coppertone 50.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I need to get better about wearing sunscreen on my face. I have a morning moisturizer that has SPF but I've heard that it's important to wear ACTUAL sunscreen, not just a moisturizer with SPF (especially for me, living on the surface of the sun that is Florida). So I need to find a good facial sunscreen. When I know I'm going to be out in the sun I slather on some Hawaiian Tropics face sunscreen but it definitely smells like sunscreen, lol. I'm pretty religious about using Paula's Choice skincare products, so I will likely try their face sunscreen at some point.
ReplyDeleteI liked this roundup!
I've never head of Canmake. Now I want to try that. Does it smell like sunscreen? I try to find something more neutral. I've been using the Aveeno Facial SPF for a couple of years and it's been my favorite so far. I heard good things about the La Roche Posay, but it's pricier.
ReplyDeleteCanmake has a very mild, almost entirely scentless smell. It also feels really moisturizing to me. I really like it, but have been having quite a time finding it recently.
