1) The biggest event in town in years was when a woman killed her grandmother in a horrific manner, set fire to the house where her grandmother's body was, and then took off with her two-year old. One Amber alert and an arrest later, the whole story was gruesome, horrific, shocking, and is absolutely the only thing our local Facebook page can talk about. It has replaced complaining about the state of the roads in our town and how this one guy who committed a double homicide last summer still remains at large.
(I was driving home from work that afternoon and we had an unexpected storm and the roads were flash flooding. I got into town and the whole area around our local museum was swarmed with emergency vehicles and I just assumed it was storm related. I was wrong.)
There's not much else to report on this front. I think both of these incidents reinforce to me that we really don't know what's going on in someone else's home and that we need to be very careful around family members *side-eyes her husband*.
2) The top guy at our university, who has been quite unpopular with faculty, is resigning because he has cancer. He's probably getting more support than he ever has before. It's sad, but it's also encouraging because maybe, just maybe, we'll get someone at that position who will be an effective leader. Or maybe not.
3) There are currently no local ordinances against open containers of intoxicants or public urination. The City Council is considering some ordinances in light of a request from the police chief. People are up in arms. Apparently not being able to have a can of beer while walking your dog IS AN INFINGEMENT OF BASIC CIVIL RIGHTS. Or whatever. It's Wisconsin. I don't see this getting passed.
Sordid news stories make me side-eye my husband, too. Love this small-town gossip!
