Remember when NaBloPoMo was a thing? It feels like ages ago. I've never successfully written every day in November, but I feel like if there's a year to do it, 2020 is that year. There's no traveling for Thanksgiving. There's no excuse that I'm just so busy trying to get stuff done before we take off. On the other hand, life is the exact same every day, so I don't know exactly what I'm going to write about. I mean, world events are huge and scary, but my personal life is deadly boring.
But. Here's my goal. I want to write in this space every day. I have a vague goal of writing at least 300 words a day. That seems reasonable to me, but I reserve the right to change that goal willy nilly if it seems too ambitious.
On Saturday, I went to the last Farmer's Market of the season. I stocked up on honey and butternut squash and triplechecked with the honey seller that I could call at any time and get more. We go through about five pounds of honey a month, which is insane, but we've had the same bag of sugar for ages, so you now know about our sweetener of choice.
And then we got ready for trick or treating.
Hannah is a free elf! |
Our town does this bizarre trick or treating ritual from one to four in the afternoon of the Saturday before or of Halloween. Lame. So we put out our jack-o-lanterns, turned on the outside lights, and put out bowls. We had a bowl with KitKats and Reese's peanut butter cups, a bowl with Skittles and Starburst, and a teal pumpkin with mini bubble wands, stickers, and bouncy eyeballs. We put out a sign that suggested people take their favorite and I sat on the couch and watched.
It was a beautiful day, sunny and warm. But we only had 29 kids come through. On one hand, it's nice to see everyone taking Covid precautions. On the other hand, I feel like this method of trick or treating is pretty safe and I was bummed. Regardless, we have checked Halloween off the list and I feel like we did our community a solid.
I made a couple of goody bags and drove around town dropping them off at the homes of people who I know have kids (signed, so they don't think they're from some creeper) and we still have tons of candy left. Maybe Dr. BB will take some of it to school to pass out to his students, but I'm pretty sure we'll still be eating Halloween candy at Christmas. So be it.
