1) Last weekend we went to the Wisconsin Dells with my husband's family. There were twelve adults and eleven children in one VRBO. It was an eight bedroom, four bath building with a kitchen that was smaller than it probably should have been, but there was an arcade with old-fashioned game cabinets in the basement. If you aren't from the upper Midwest, you might not have heard of the Dells, so let me describe it to you. It's a weird tourist-y area with lots of theme parks, especially water parks, and duck boat rides. There's also anything your childlike wonder would like to do - go-karts, ziplining, mini golf, whatever.

Our niblings are aged nine to nineteen and every single one of them had a fabulous time.
If anyone wants to know, we went to Noah's Ark on a Thursday. It was a typical water park with long lines, but the kids had a good time. We rented a cabana and there was always an adult there for the kids to check in with. On Friday, we went to Land of Natura, which is not a typical water park. It's a man-made salt lake with huge inflatables that you climb on and because the lake is deep (up to 25 feet in places), our boys spent most of the day practicing dives, backflips, and somersaults. It was also COLD AND RAINY when went (what do I mean by cold? mid-60s! in July!), so that kept down the crowds. I swear our party made up about a third of the people there. Regardless, most kids said Land of Natura was their favorite part of the weekend, so if you're in the Dells and you have confident swimmers, this is a good option.
2) Dells Escape Rooms - We had two big groups do different escape rooms. One group was a bunch of the kids with their grandfather and his wife. The rest was our oldest niece (19) and people of my generation. Both teams managed to escape, although I have to admit our room only had like twenty seconds to spare. LOL. If you like escape rooms, these ones are pretty fun. (You might note that I'm wearing a hoodie and my husband is wearing pants. WE WERE ALL VERY COLD. None of us were prepared for how cold it was that weekend.)
3) Where were the girls when we were in the Dells? I'm glad you asked. Zelda stayed at home and our neighbor came by every day to give her wet food and clean her box. ALSO! SHE READS TO THE CAT. No wonder Zelda ignored us completely when we came home.
Hannah? Hannah was at the swank boarding place just outside Chicago where they take 80 pictures of her doing nothing every day. Maybe I should have put all these photos in some sort of collage, BUT NO, you have to scroll by each one.
Nicole talks about how Rex comes back from boarding like he was at a frat party with messed up fur and fleas or whatever. Hannah came back with a powerful thirst, a smell like she has never had a bath in her life, and refusing to eat food. So, that's something, I guess.
4) Our side and backyard recently became deer daycare. I cannot stress enough to you how crazy this is because WE LIVE IN TOWN. ON A BUSY ROAD. The deer overpopulation here is nuts.
5) Anniversaries - Earlier this week was the one year anniversary of my mother's death. I am, in a very healthy fashion, ignoring this fact.
6) Giveaway winners - The giveaway winners are Lisa and Jenny! Congratulations! I'll send those packages out in the mail sometime in the next week or so.

The Dells: what a place! Never been and also ‘No’ to escape rooms and fawns in backyards.
ReplyDeleteNo one does entertainment like the Dells, that's for sure.
DeleteThat all sounds very fun! I mean, except for the cold part. I do love a waterpark and haven't been to one in eons. Also! I'm glad Hannah had a good time at the fancy boarding place. Rex always loves his place and yes, it's like a wild frat party. He's always kind of tired when he comes home, so that's good. Tired and filthy! We have deer around here but mostly they don't come into our yard. I think they can smell Rex. We have a deer fence around the vegetable garden but one did walk through the flower garden one night, judging by the prints in the soil.
ReplyDeleteI mean, those photos do not show me a Hannah enjoying herself. She's whale-eyed and stress panting in a lot of them! But she's safe and kept alive, so I think it's okay for her to go there once or twice a year when we can't really avoid it.
DeleteI think that's what surprised us about the deer in our yard, too - can't they smell Hannah? She's out there three times a day!
Yes to fawn daycare, many times. No to the others although I think an escape room would be fun! The Dells sounds like my personal nightmare, although it sounds like it was perfect for your crew. Definitely seems like you had an epic time.
ReplyDeleteAnniversaries of loss suck, full stop. Sending you love.
Hannah looks like she had a wonderful time. I hope she returns to normal soon!
(This is Suzanne.)
The Dells are fun! For real! You just have to be in the right frame of mind.
DeleteHannah's eating does seem to have settled back into normal behavior, so I've noted that for next time she goes to boarding - her food will be off for a bit, but she'll bounce back.
80 pictures a day is pretty close to the right amount, and heck yes I scrolled through every one. We've had fawns in our yard a few times. When they're really young they have no scent, so both Stepdog and Doggo were totally oblivious to them.
ReplyDeleteNeither Hannah nor Zelda seemed to recognize that the deer were in our yard. It was crazy! Zelda, in particular, notes all sorts of animals.
DeleteHannah is SO SMILEY in the photos. She had the time of her life, clearly, and she is now protesting upon returning to her Real Life.
ReplyDeleteI live in a town as well, and we once had a deer WALKING DOWN OUR STREET, ON THE SIDEWALK. I was enthralled (and speechless, for once). I also awoke one morning to a mallard strolling down our driveway; another time I found a wee, bitty owl in our front yard. I know deer can be pesty, but I'd sacrifice a few plants to see them regularly in our yard.
Despite the cold, it looks and seems as if everyone had a great time. How awesome that a big family can get together like that and have so much fun.
Hugs to you at this difficult time, my friend.
I don't know, friend. I think it's clear in those photos that Hannah's pretty stressed. Her ears are pinned back, she's licking her lips a lot, and she's super whale-eyed. I mean, that's FINE, as long as she's safe and eating at least a little bit.
DeleteI would LOVE it if the deer ate everything in our overgrown yard. For realz. Come back, deer!!
It sounds like you had a blast! What a great place for a family gathering. I've never done an escape room. Is it scary? What happens if you can't escape? It looks like Hannah had a great time at her boarding place. It's nice that they send lots of picutres so you can see what she's up to. Congrats to Lisa and Jenny!
ReplyDeleteEscape rooms tend to have dark themes, so their scariness can depend on your level of comfort. We were trying to escape a Russian camp and it was dark in the room (we had lanterns) and there was a chest freezer with body parts in it (fake, obviously) and a mannequin that had been decapitated and the fake blood was pretty gross. In the room where we were, we could always go back out the way we came in (if you got claustrophobic, needed to use the restroom, etc.). If you don't make it in the time allotted, someone just opens the door!
DeleteYES to the fawn bedding down. Many times! I was chatting with a neighbor last week, and she remarked how crazy the deer population has gotten. They don't even bother trying to keep deer out of their yard anymore.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Natura, but then again, I don't really have any reason to get up to the Dells, unless it's for a supper club. When my adult daughter was visiting a couple of weeks ago, we drove past Noah's Ark and all the other fun places, and she was amazed. I told her if I'd lived here when she was younger, we'd have been regulars.
I didn't even know we needed deer deterrence. I don't mind if they hang out, but it's not very safe in our yard, you know?
DeleteYes, the Dells are excellent for kids! There was never a shortage of things to do!
Oh, that picture of the fawn and mom is adorable. As are the pictures of Hannah, of course.
ReplyDeleteAnniversaries are rough, I’m glad you’re ignoring it.
I don’t think I’ve seen deer in our little complex (maybe? Probably not) but they occasionally are in our VERY crowded part of our Metropolitin area. I once saw one LEAP into traffic, 4 lanes each way, early in the morning. Somehow it made it across all 8 lanes without getting hit or causing an accident, which was amazing because there were a lot of cars. I’ve also walked past a dead deer in that same spot though, so not always happy endings for sure.
Right? Dr. BB took the photos of the deer and the one of the mom and the baby made me squeal with delight.
DeleteWhat what what!!! ME! I won the giveaway??? WOOT WOOT! I'm excited!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo the funny thing is, I have been to Wisconsin Dells, when I was a kid. I don't really remember it, but there are photos of me and my sister in some weird theme park, and we were wearing jeans and sweatshirts (in the summer). So it's basically exactly how you described it, right down to the weather.
I was going to ask how Hannah did at the boarding place. It looks like she was happy!
I know you're ignoring the anniversary, but I'm sending you a virtual hug anyway <3
You did win the giveaway! I put it in the mail yesterday, so hopefully you should get it by Friday or Saturday.
DeleteGoing to the Dells with kids is awesome. It really truly is.
Even the idea of an Escape room makes me tense up so I don’t know if that will ever be on my bingo card.
ReplyDeleteThe Wisconsin Dells sound very fun.
We have a lot of deer here, very bold deer that wander through our yard. I’m not sure I would want them to bed down here. They are cute and all, and I’m always struck with a sense of wonder when I see them, but there is one part of my brain that just screams TICKS TICKS TICKS!!!!!
If you go to an escape room with the right people, it's great fun.
DeleteWe have a possum that lives under our porch, so I don't worry as much about ticks, but you do raise a good point. I just like that they were eating our (overgrown) yard.
That sounds like a fun weekend with family. I've never heard - or been to -Dell's.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Hannah and Zelda were well taken care of. I am happy to hear you are able to board Hannah - I would have thought that it might be difficult with her, but it sounds like she had a blast.
Yes, I guess if you're not from the Midwest, the Dells aren't as well known. It's like Branson, but with less music and more waterparks.
DeleteHannah is not an easy board, which is why she has to go to a place that is 1.5 hours in the opposite direction of where were were going. She needs to be separated from other dogs and not deal with men. *sigh* I'm glad we found a place that would take her, though.
I've not had a fawn bed down in my yard. We've had several sightings of a coyote. He's in the neighborhood often. I've never done an escape room. I don't think I've ever been to the Dells. A few of the kids have gone with friends. It's not that far from us, so we should go sometime. The family gathering sounds like it was so much fun.
ReplyDeleteOh, I bet the girls would love the Dells! Can they swim? Maybe they wouldn't like it if they aren't good swimmers.
DeleteThat sounds like a mighty big VRBO! And loads of fun. I've never done an escape room and I'm not sure I'd like it but it might be worth a try just for fun. If I can pick the people I would like to be in it with! I'm headed off for a couple of days and my cat sitter is a cousin I don't know terribly well whose head injury has led to serious memory issues and confusion. So far he's called multiple times and I have postit notes for each feeding moment that he can peel off the counter when he's done. I just hope he remembers the litter box. I may regret not boarding!
ReplyDeleteYes, you definitely need a good crew in an escape room or it's not as much fun.
DeleteOh, no! Your cat sitter situation sounds precarious. I hope it all works out for you! We boarded Z once and it DID NOT go well. She was so stressed out that she just hung out in the litter box and they weren't able to clean it the whole time she was there. We've just tried to make it work so she can stay at home since then. Fortunately, cats are relatively easy compared to dogs, so hopefully your cousin can do it.
Yay! I won something! Hurrah!!!
ReplyDeleteI am glad the family meet up was fun. I have heard of the Dells but have never been to the Dells. I don't think I could convince Phil to go but maybe I will at some point. Our boys are very into swimming and have gotten to be quite competent at it, especially Paul, so they would love a water park. Heck, I would, too. I love water slides! we had a similarly large house in January of 2020 when we met up at a resort in Minnesota to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Paul was almost 3 at the time and a VERY EARLY RISER so it was kind of stressful to keep him quiet enough to not wake up the whole house. And it was January and very very very cold out so we were trapped in doors. We have some challenging personality dynamics so I was just glad to get through the weekend with no arguments/conflict! The next time we will all be together will be next June when my nephew gets married but we will all stay in our own hotel rooms which I much prefer as I need some personal space!!
You are the winner! Congrats! I put it in the mail so you should get it by Friday or Saturday.
DeleteWhen the niblings were younger, they were ALWAYS up before us. It was fine. No one was mad about it. Now the youngest is 8 or so (I really should figure out how old he is) and they all sleep in later than the adults. It is a lot easier now that they are older, to be honest. Little kids are fun, for sure, but the bigger kids are easier because they can tell you what they want to do and opt out of things if they won't think they're fun.
I've never done an escape room — honestly, I'm not an anxious person at all, but this gives me the heebie-jeebies. Like, what if I can't get out, ever?
ReplyDeleteHannah's photos made me giggle. So, you drove her how far to board? Did I read that correctly? Chicago?
The family vacation sounds like a lot of family fun, for everyone. I can't even imagine a temp of 60's in July.
At this one, the door you entered is always unlocked so you can exit anytime you need!
DeleteYes, Hannah's boarding place is in a Chicago suburb. It is about 90 minutes away, but they can handle her weirdness AND it always has open spots.
Wow... what a family trip. I can only imagine the noise and then add in theme parks. you are brave.
ReplyDeleteThe deer look adorable. Do they bother you in the yard?
