Yoga Gear

For months now I've had a note that somebody asked me about my yoga setup at home. I don't remember who asked and if it was you, I'm sorry that I'm not organized enough to keep track of such things, but I appreciate the topic suggestion/question.

At home I have a yoga mat, two blocks, a blanket, a bolster, and a necktie I use as a strap that my husband will no longer use because it has a stain on it that's invisible to everyone on the planet but him. I also ALWAYS light a candle when I'm doing yoga. Yes, even when it's ninety degrees and seventy percent humidity. 

All of it gets put away in a plastic egg crate and is tucked under a table in our music/sewing/workout room when I'm done with it.


I've been known to grab pillows and blankets off of beds if I need more padding and/or elevation. What can I say? I'm a high-maintenance kind of yoga girl.

At school I have a mat, two blocks, an actual yoga strap, and a blanket (no bolster). I actually have THREE mats because I like to have extra in case someone comes to the yoga program I put on without a mat of their own.

How many yoga mats do you own? Do you have all the yoga gear or are you strictly a mat kind of person?

  1. I don't do a lot of yoga (usually only if I need a "yoga for stiff neck" kind of specialized routine), but I have three or four yoga mats! The cushier, the better. One of them is more of an exercise mat, I guess, and it's pretty enormous. I stack my Gaiam mat on top of it for floor work.

    1. Interesting. I don't like cushy mats very much because they make me feel less grounded. But I do regularly need the blanket under my knees because my left knee has a screaming nerve thing happening. That's where there are a lot of different types of yoga mats.

  3. I have three yoga mats, and my husband has one, so we are well-equipped with mats. I also use a cover on all my mats for easy cleaning and to keep hands and feet from slipping. I have blocks and bolsters and all the things, but unless I'm doing a restorative practice (weekends) I just use mat (with cover! Important to me) one cork block, and my eye pillow for savasana.

    1. I have a confession to make, Nicole. Unless I take my mat outside for a practice, I don't clean it. It's just me! And my own sweat! *shrug* I am not generally sweating profusely (I am so cold so much of the time) that it never occurs to me to wipe it down.
