Thursday, April 9
30-minute yoga video in the student union at lunchtime
60-minute Zumba class after work at our local church - I don't know if I've ever talked about this class. It's held at a local Methodist church and I usually think very mean things about Methodists (based on two weddings I've been to), but this church seems cool. Zumba is free - they ask for donations. They are always handing out free food and clothing. It also seems to serve our Hispanic population and when I go, I'm usually one of the only people there who doesn't speak fluent Spanish. I love the vibe and how patient they are with me (the white lady with no rhythm showing up). It's honestly pretty great and welcoming. I don't go every week because it doesn't always work with my schedule and all the impact hurts my leg, but it's so much fun and I laugh and always feel better after I go. Thumbs up, First United. You make me think that maybe there are still some Christian churches doing good.

Friday, April 10
Day off

Saturday, April 11
30-minute total body dumbbell strength workout
30-minute yin yoga

Sunday, April 12
30-minute walking workout
30 minute low back hatha yoga - I was sort of hoping for more twists out of this, but it was helpful.

Monday, April 13 and Tuesday, April 14
Days off

Wednesday, April 15
5-minute warmup - Maybe I've never talked about this before, but I think warmups and cooldowns are a scam. But it had been a minute since I'd lifted a weight, so I did a warmup. I do not think it did anything.
35-minute no repeat total body strength training
30-minute yin yoga

Thursday, April 16

Wednesday, April 22
15-minute stretch class at lunchtime
30-minute yoga total body stretch - I did something to my bad leg yesterday at class, so I did a mat yoga practice. But I did it outside! Why not? It was a beautiful spring day.

Thursday, April 23
30-minute yoga video at the student union during lunchtime
30-minute Zumba (I was there for an hour-long class, but I have to admit that my feet were killing me - I had new shoes and it didn't go well and whatever I did at the Tuesday night class is a thing)

Friday, April 24
Day off

Saturday, April 25
30-minute full body dumbbell workout - I really liked this video. Challenging moves without being impossible.
30-minute yoga cool down

Sunday, April 26
35-minute total fascia stretch - I was supposed to do cardio today, but I honestly ran out of sports bras. I had to throw one out and I didn't realize I was so close to the margins on non-yoga sports bras. I need to buy one or two more!

  1. I'm intrigued by some of these yoga classes and the total fascia stretch class. I've never done a yoga Kassandra video but I might check one out.
Sounds like you had a good month, other than the leg acting up a little more than usual? Anyway, sounds like you know when to push and when to take good care of it.
I do have a gym, but I haven't been there much lately since I've been doing Caroline Girvan workouts at home. i'll get back there eventually. Meanwhile they're happy to take my money every month.

    1. Oh, I like Yoga with Kassandra a lot. And Devi Daily Yoga, too. I think we sometimes get in a rut with the same YouTube channels.

My leg is a problem. I think it's mostly because I needed new shoes - it happened really suddenly. Then I didn't remember to order insoles for the new shoes. I had the new shoes with insoles yesterday and my leg is still a problem, though. I think it's anything with impact is going to be a problem. Oh, well. There are worse things.

  2. I always wondered about the value of a warm-up and cool-down. Maybe for hardcore jocks it's a Thing, but other than that, I'm with you.

Hannah doesn't seem very into yoga. I hope she got a good nap. 😉

    1. Hannah wants to be on my mat, which is why I have to bring out her bed. LOL. She does like to be near me when I do yoga, though, which I think is sweet.

  3. You had a great month, and perhaps I will branch out and try some of your workouts. I tend to stick with Caroline Girvan and Adrienne, but it might be nice to mix it up a bit. I don’t belong to a gym, I do all of my exercising in front of my TV (aside from my morning walks)

There’s a very inclusive Methodist church around here, and I love the Lutheran church that I drive by regularly. They have banners that they put up that say things like “Made in God’s Image - Black Lives Matter - To God and to Us”. They also had one about LGBT, and one for immigrants, but I don’t remember the wording on those. If I were going to go to church, I think I’d go there. I don’t know if they have any exercise programs though…

    1. I had no idea Methodists were so varied. I guess it makes sense - the Catholics are, too. I went to a hardcore Methodist wedding once where there was lots of talk of the wife as a "helpmeet" and "subservience to the man" and I made some assumptions. I am glad this church is a more welcoming place.

  4. I'm glad your Zumba class was a good experience!

The line about thinking warm ups are a scam SHOOK ME. I never thought it was optional?!?! But then again, I enjoy a good warm up -- sure, sometimes I'm antsy to get to the workout, and I definitely feel antsy during cool downs, but I feel like the warm ups do help me limber up. I am very old and stiff, Engie!

I have a home gym and that's where I workout. I would not like to go to a gym. The equipment is intimidating and I feel like I would be too self conscious, even knowing that no one would pay a lick of attention to me.

    1. They are option, Suzanne. I do enough yoga that I don't really feel that stiff. I just think they add fifteen minutes to my workout - fifteen minutes I don't have. I barely have time to get the 30 minutes in, you know?

Yes, I have a home gym, too, although I think I'll do a tour of my "gym" so everyone will know that what I call my home gym is a bench and some adjustable dumbbells. Ha!

  5. You had a great month and I LOVED the tidbit about the Zumba class. So amazing that you join because it's a) in a methodist church, b) full of people who speak Spanish and c) because you claim you don't have rhythm (although I doubt that).

Regarding the warm ups and cool downs - I am convinced that it - and other things - is what has kept me injury free for 10+ years of running. Do with that info what you will ;)

As you know, I run outdoors and I do have a neighborhood small gym that I use. I haven't taken any group classes in ages though (since before the pandemic), unless you count my virtual group classes with Peloton :)

    1. Oh, San, I've never gotten injured working out. Gardening? Sure. Walking across the dining room? Sure. Getting out of my car? Absolutely. Working out? No. I don't exert myself nearly enough for that.

I love a group class more than anything, it turns out. I feed off other people. If I'm by myself, I am just grumpy!

  6. Your workout schedule always impresses me! I’m in the my exercise is chasing my kids stage right now, but starting next week I’m going to be doing a stroller workout class twice a week for seven weeks. Kinda scared to be honest but also looking forward to it.

I’m curious about the Methodist weddings?! My only experience with them is hearing that my grandparents met in the 1950s because my granddad’s friend invited him to the better Methodist youth club where they had “pretty girls and dancing!” Apparently he’d been going to the strict Methodist church and my grandma was one of the pretty girls at the one with dancing.
