November 2025: What I Spent

As a reminder, my husband pays the "big bills" like mortgage, phone, car, and electricity. I pay for groceries and the pets and that somehow evens things out.

Something's that absolutely not included here is that we bought a new car and put down some serious $$$. That came out of our shared savings account. Still. It's on my mind.

Entertainment ($12.65, <1%) - My Spotify subscription.

Cars ($87.64, 2.5%) - Gas a few times. (LOL at the elephant in the room on this one.)

Clothes ($109.85, 3.1%)  - I bought new leggings and underwear and I'm still figuring out some new shoes. The saga of the shoes is long and maybe someday I'll regale you with it, but I paid for the shoes, had to return them for fit, and then they charged me more for the adjustments. This has been a literally months long process and I'm not even sure I love the shoes.

Gifts ($137, 3.9%) -  A birthday gift for my nephew and I ordered holiday cards and our Christmas ornament for the year.

Eating out ($147, 4.2%) - At the beginning of the month, I was in Michigan and the bulk of this is a dinner where I treated my sister and brother-in-law.

Savings ($200, 5.7%) - I mean, it IS something, I guess.

Personal care ($221.06, 6.3%) - Haircut, some hair product, and some makeup.

Bills ($256.01, 7.3%) - Water/sewer and insurance. This will go up slightly with the new car.

Groceries ($699.40, 19.9%) - This doesn't seem too bad.

Pets ($769.93, 21.9%) - ARGH. Last month this was under $300. Zelda had her annual exam, they both got food, I bought some birdseed, and Zelda had ALL her  medicine replaced this month.

Health ($877.05, 24.9%) - I'm still paying my PT and I had an eye exam and ordered new contacts and I had to pay $50 for pathology for that tortuous appointment. I have to admit that seeing that all this was more than groceries for the month has been a hard pill to swallow.

Normally I ask about fun purchases, but I'm switching it up.  What did you pay for in November that you resent?

  1. Hmm. I don't think there's anything I resent, although November is always a pretty spendy month around here.

    1. I feel like money is just spilling out of me for months and months now. Maybe things will change in January? (lolz)

  2. Hmm. Not sure if I resent anything, but November was SO spendy because of prepping things for Christmas.

    1. I just feel like December is going to be worse. But then it will rebound? SURELY IT HAS TO.

  3. Well- i can't say I exactly resent this, but we did have a $600 vet bill in November, and today we're going back for more! I guess I would say it's money I wish I didn't have to spend.

    1. Poor Charlotte. Sending her all the cuddles.

  4. I get resentful about individual items at the grocery store because there is NO WAY I should be asked to spend $3.79 for some Brussels sprouts. Or $4.68 for the good hamburger buns (Martinson's potato rolls). I have a small moment of outrage for almost every fresh produce item; it's very stressful. Thankfully, it prepares me for the rest of the store, where I don't even look at prices because I have already been desensitized and just get whatever I need, cursing the republicans at whose feet I lay all of the blame for this.

November is always expensive because of Thanksgiving, Theo's birthday, and the fact that we contribute to the Toys for Tots campaign locally. That last thing is fun--we shove all kinds of toys into our cart, then haul them to the local brewery to load into the collection box. Makes me happy.

    1. We went to the store yesterday for what I called a short list and it was $120. ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DOLLARS. What is even happening?

Oh, it sounds fun to just buy for Toys for Tots with reckless abandon!!

  5. I’m going to commiserate with Nance and say groceries. The prices are so damn high, and my company rarely gives raises. HUMBUG.

  6. The vet bills, even though they are not monthly, are usually BIG when they come up, so I can fully understand. (Knocking on wood that my two crazy dogs are healthy at the moment)

I'm a bit bitter at spending $500.00 for carpet stretching and then another $600.00 for carpet cleaning on the top floor of our GA house; it's wall-to-wall carpet that kept getting speed bumps, then my dogs would go up there and poop when I wasn't looking. (!!) It's crazy because it's the area of the house that is used the least, but it needed to be done before selling.

    1. Ugh. I always feel like home repairs are TOO MUCH. How can it cost that much? And why do we have pets again? They're so expensive.

  7. In November, I resent that I had to buy no less than 4 pairs of black business pants to find a pair that both fit me and did not go 8 inches past my feet because I need to wear “concert black” this weekend. I’m so glad I started early! (And, yes, I know I probably should have just found help hemming one of the earlier pairs, sigh…)

    1. Look, I had hemming a pair of pants on my to-do list for months and months before my husband finally paid someone else to do it. I get not wanting to do it!

  8. Ooooh I have a resentful payment to tell you about. Our accountants notified us that we underpaid our estimated taxes this year (and WHO, might you ask, advised us what we should pay????) so we had to do something fancy with my IRA to avoid paying a penalty and it was all very confusing and I'm super annoyed by it. I mean I am glad they caught it before there was a penalty and I'm glad we were able to do something about it, champagne problems lalala and all that, but I am still annoyed.

    1. Ugh. I guess you can't pay them any less because they told you the wrong thing, can you? *big sigh*

  9. We had a $400 grocery bill at Woodman's one time in November. I know we generally go there to stock up, but good hell, I have NO idea how it got so high. We typically spend no more than $150. Thankfully, the next several grocery shops were under $100, so I guess it all evens out?

    1. I don't remember the last time we left Woodman's under $100, so I guess maybe it even outs for you. LOL. For me it just keeps going up. Oh, well. You gotta eat.

  10. I took the girls to a thrift shop and they both found things that they liked. It was the day before T-giving. If I waited to buy those things that Saturday, I'd have gotten 40% off. I wouldn't say I resent it, because the thrift store funds a women's shelter (or something geared toward women in need) so it is for a good cause. But dang, that discount would've been sweet. Good thing I didn't wait though - we got dumped on in the snow department and I probably wouldn't have gone that day.

    1. Yes, I would have NOT left to go clothes shopping during a snowstorm. I have limits!

I resent that I have to pay for a damaged library book that I didn't damage. The pages were warped when I checked it out, but after I returned it the librarian sent me a picture of the warped pages and a crack in the spine. I didn't do it! It probably got damaged in the book return as the pages were warped. However, I might let it go as I love my library. (And goodness knows my kids have destroyed books in the past that I've paid for). But it wasn't my fault this time!

    1. WHAT? I am incensed on your behalf.

    2. That is RUDE. I guess I would just see it as a donation to the library on my end. It saves me so much money that I probably should chip in some money every year.

  12. Hmm...what's currently irking me more is that I'm doing technology training for a university course I'm teaching in January, but I'm not paid for the training. Grrrrrr.

    1. Ha! Our staff/faculty rarely get paid for training and it's definitely a bone of contention.
