A few weeks ago we went to a fundraiser at the local community center. I think I've mentioned in the past that I have never actually paid to go to these fundraisers, but there's a board member who always pays for my tickets. Well, that happened AGAIN. Now that I not underemployed anymore, I can actually probably afford to pay for my own tickets, but this year I just forgot to buy them (I am overwhelmed by other things, as you can probably guess) and she emailed me that she put our names down for tickets. I am grateful to her, but I really need to start paying my own way.
ANYWAY, because of this, I felt obligated to actually donate money while I was there and one of the things I sort of went crazy on was the silent auction.
I won two items.
1) A monthly scone subscription! Every month I get three scones from a local bakery delivered to a small business just down the street. I get to choose the flavors and then just go pick them up. HOW FUN. My first order came in while I was in Michigan, so Dr. BB picked them up for me and I had a scone for breakfast for three days when I came back!

2) A decorative, handmade plate. Do I need this plate? No. Do I have any way to display this plate? No. Did I bid on it thinking someone would certainly outbid me? Yes.

Have you ever won a silent auction item? Did you ever win when you thought someone else would bid higher than you?

What a great photo of you with Dr BB! And a scone delivery - that is such a fun thing to win. I love subscription things like that ("It's the gift that keeps on giving, Clark").
ReplyDeleteThe scone delivery makes me giggle every time I have another email about it. I feel like it's not worth the effort for the bakery, but it is worth the effort for me!
DeleteI have bid on one silent auction thing in my life and I won it. A little painting and it still hangs in my son's bedroom.
ReplyDeleteA scone delivery is SO fun. I love that it's consumable and once a month. No extra mess, you have something delicious to eat, and it's rare enough that it will always feel like a treat.
It is such a treat to have gluten-filled things in the house. I immediately take them to work so gluten is never unwrapped in the house, but it's fun!
DeleteOoh! The scone subscription is a GREAT prize. What are you going to do with the plate? Can you call it your "scone plate" and eat your scones off it three days a month?
ReplyDeleteHa! I don't know what I'm going to do with that plate. Probably gift it to someone for a housewarming gift if I know myself at all.
DeleteHow fun to win! The scone subscription is such a fun treat. I remember when I was like 12 I won a microwave at a church raffle (I was hoping for the boombox). Still exciting to win, even though I had no need for a microwave at the time.
ReplyDeleteHa! The idea of a 12-year-old getting a microwave is pretty funny. Raffles are really chancey, aren't they?
DeleteI love the blueberry scones that we get at local cafe/bakery.
ReplyDeleteA good scone is always worth celebrating.
DeleteOMG, for a second I thought that picture was of you two and your NEW CAR! I’m easily fooled.
ReplyDeleteA blueberry lemon scone? Yes please!
If you don’t go with Jenny’s excellent suggestion to make that your scone plate, you could perhaps hang it on the wall, OR give it as a Christmas gift, if you know anyone who is into such things. It’s a nice plate.
Have I ever won something because I thought someone would outbid me? Maybe? I’m not sure. Last year I won some really nice wine which we had for Thanksgiving.
Imagine how impractical a car that would be for us! And yet it doesn't seem like a bad idea.
DeleteIt is a nice plate. I'll inevitably give it to someone as a gift because otherwise it's going to be unused, I think.
You and Dr. BB look fantastic in that photo! How fun that you won two of the auction items! I am excited to hear about your monthly scones (will they all be sweet???) and I am looking forward to learning where your decorative plate ends up.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever been to a silent auction. Probably good, as I would likely end up in a Joey Tribbiani situation. My in laws have been to a few, though. Once, they won a fur stole that they then gave to me. Not sure how or why they got the impression that I am a fur stole person, because I am not.
I think all the scones will be sweet. They gave me choices for October, November, and December and all of those were sweet options.
DeleteA fur stole! A FUR STOLE!! What do you even do with such an item?!
I love that plate- you'll find a use/ place for it eventually!
ReplyDeleteI always get stuck at silent auctions with things I won hoping to be outbid. Last spring I won the auction basket I put together and donated! It had a Halloween quilt in it that my sister had made, so I wanted to make sure the winning bid reflected her artistry. Oh well. I donated the basket to a different auction this fall ( for a non profit related to my daughter's disability) and I think the fall timing allowed it to go for an appropriate amount. I made sure I stayed away from that auction.
Oh, I hate it when you have to bid on your own item. That stinks. I'm glad it finally was rewarded for its awesomeness.
DeleteI'm so glad she bought your tickets again and what a generous way to pay it forward by spending on silent auction tickets. We won our family photo session at a fundraiser called the Violet Foundation last fall. Violet died of brain cancer at age 3. I used to babysit for her dad and I'm still friends with the family. Anyway, I hoped we would win - this was the drop a ticket in a bucket and see which name gets drawn thing. I put all of our tickets in this bucket as none of the other items interested us.
ReplyDeleteThere were a lot of trave/sports/garden/alcohol-related items that didn't interest me at all, so those were the ONLY two items I bid on and I absolutely thought someone would outbid me. Oh, well. I'm pleased with the result.
DeleteMonthly scone delivery?!?! Genius.
ReplyDeleteRight? It seems like this is a one-off for the company, though, so it's a bit of a faff. They email me and get my flavor choices and then they deliver to a local shop and then they email me that it's been delivered. I am not sure the business is getting their money's worth with all the hassle on their end!
DeleteA monthly scone delivery sounds like a dream! (Even if it is logistically heavy on their side.) I feel like my experience at every silent auction I've ever been to has been to bid on random somethings (because that is what one does) and then randomly winning the thing I never thought I'd win or have to have a plan for.
ReplyDeleteHa! I never really bid on things that I wouldn't use because I seem to always end up winning silent auction items. If I can't use them, that would be upsetting!
DeleteENGIE. Everything about this post! That is an AMAZING picture of you two! A MONTHLY SCONE DELIVERY? I really like that plate - if you don't want it I'm sure it will be a great regift for someone.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I've ever bid on a silent auction.
No silent auctions?! Wow! That's...making me rethink my life choices.
DeleteHell no, I'm rethinking mine. Monthly scones? I just don't end up a lot of places where silent auctions are a thing.
DeleteYou both look so glamorous! I have bid on several silent auction items, but have never won. One item I once bid on was a dumptruck load of gravel. I thought it would be so cool to win that! But I didn't win.
ReplyDeleteIf you have the right driveway, a dump truck of gravel is perfect!!
DeleteOMG, I absolutely LOVE scones but have trouble finding them in town. Picked up some from Jones Market recently that were pretty good, but otherwise, I have to hit up the Willy Street Co-Op in Madison to get my fix. What's the local bakery?
ReplyDeleteIt's Wood Street Bakery out of Whitewater. They don't have a storefront, but you can pick up their scones at Tuttle's downtown Friday - Sunday and Jones Market on Friday and Saturday. I bet the ones you picked up at Jones were from this bakery. Wood Street is also at a lot of farmers markets, including Fort at WW.
DeleteYep, those are the same ones. They were really good. I also like their granola. Thanks for the tips!
DeleteA scone subscription. Now, I could get on board with that. How delightful. Funny because I just went grocery shopping today and I am planning to make scones (cheddar-chive) next week. Also, you two look stunning :)
ReplyDeleteYes! So far they've all been sweet scones, so I'll be curious if any savory scones become an option.
DeleteThat scone subscription sounds amazing!
ReplyDeleteSo far it's been great! I'm happy with it!
DeleteA fun, fancy car. A wonderful picture of the 2 of you. MONTHLY SCONES WITH GLUTEN. And a plate that you can use, display, or regift. All good things.
