September Week Two Photo Roundup

My thirty day goal for September is to take a photo every day. I'm going to just do a quick photo roundup each week to keep myself accountable.

Monday, September 8
I wish I could explain to all of you just how much time Zelda spends on my lap. If I am sitting down, there is a very high likelihood that the cat is near me. Unfortunately, the two of us huddled up on the couch is super hard to get photo evidence of, so I did my best here with the two of us while I was attempting to eat dinner.

Tuesday, September 9
It is official. Hannah's days of getting all three walks in the sunlight is down to one walk in the sunlight. Poor baby. Soon it will be zero. This is our morning walk.

Wednesday, September 10
My friend's mom sent me a recipe for ricciarelli, a type of Italian cookie, that is naturally gluten free. I went ahead and made it. It was fiddly as fuck (notice that it was very late at night by the time I finished) and the results aren't perfect - I didn't use enough powdered sugar and I didn't let them dry enough, so they didn't crack as much as they should have, but in my defense it was closing in on eleven o'clock on a work night). ANYWAY. They are delicious.

Thursday, September 11
Someone took off work early to get her hair cut.

Hairstylist: What are we doing today?
Me: Cut it off. To my chin.
Hairstylist: No.
Me: Yes.
Hairstylist: Let's do shoulder length and if you want it shorter, we'll do that next time.
Me: Fine. Also, I want bangs. Sideswept bangs.
Hairstylist (squinting at me): Are you okay?
Me: Yes. I just want a change.
Hairstylist (stares at me suspiciously): How about we just do some long layers in the front and then if you want it to be more dramatic, we'll do that next time.
Me: Hmph.

The trees are changing. I am grumpy about this.

Saturday, September 13
I have a friend in town and I took her to a food truck festival that was happening in Nowhere. We got egg rolls and loaded fries and bubble tea and I got this cinnamon pretzel for dessert. Look, it's not at all pretzel shape, but it was perfectly baked and delicious.

Sunday, September 14
My friend is still in town and we went to a parade in a nearby town for their German festival. It was pretty lame, to be completely honest, but at least we went, right?

  1. Your haircut looks FABULOUS, and also I think you have a keeper of a hair stylist -- the gentle pushing back sounds like someone who really cares about you! For the record, you would also look great with sideswept bangs.

I have probably shared these before and they perhaps haven't sounded good, but these are my FAVORITE naturally gluten free cookies: https://www.christinascucina.com/zimtsterne-german-cinnamon-stars/

I love Zelda. And I am feeling the same way about the leaves changing.

    1. She really is a great stylist and she's been with me for years and years, so she knows me pretty well, which is why she pushed back on both of those things.

Yes, those zimtsterne cookies look pretty good. I, however, do not have a single cookie cutter, which is why I ignore those. Hmmm...I just searched. I have some Michigan-shaped cookie cutters. LOL. I guess that's what I'd have to use.

They do not have to be cutouts! You can use a glass and make circles! Or I will send you a shape! That sounds more like a threat than I intended.

  2. Your hair looks great and I love your stylist! The thing about bangs is that they require so much maintenance and trimming, although maybe sideswept are different? Idk I think you look great.
I made these GF no-bake cookie balls for my girls' party on Friday - I had made them before but forgot to put a note in my cookbook that they are super fiddly and crumbly and take FOREVER to "form into balls." They taste good but crikey. I need to note these things down!

    1. Sideswept bangs don't require that much maintenance - that's the beauty. If they're done right, they just sort of blend in to your layers.

Ugh. I have a note that this recipe takes forever. Each step is SO LONG. I'd need to start them in the morning next time, not after dinner ON A WORK NIGHT.

  3. Your hair is gorgeous! Length, shape, texture, and color are all absolutely beautiful. I’ve been getting my hair cut about once a year by first available stylists at local chains for … I guess my entire life, ha, and it’s … okay. I have had truly amazing/technically complicated haircuts (e.g., bobs) as a walk-in for like $30 and also … not-amazing very simple trims for also $30. Maybe one of these days I’ll follow through in pursuing a slightly more elevated/personalized and probably consistent experience!
This wkend I finally used a majority of the apples I picked a couple wks ago to make applesauce and apple muffins (w shredded apple and said applesauce). Another batch is likely bc they were good! (Yes, *were*!)

    1. My stylist has been with me for years. I have actually moved salons with her. It really does make all the difference with my comfort level.

  4. I love your hair cut, your stylist did a wonderful job! I like that she cares enough to slow your roll. I had you down in my book as anti-bang, so that bit surprised me.

We went to see the new Downton Abbey film this weekend, which I loved.

    1. I am historically anti-bang, but I just looked at photographs of myself over the Labor Day weekend and holy forehead, Batman. I need something to cover the huge expanse.

  5. Ha ha, I love your hair stylist- "Are you okay?" I love the way your hair came out! Are you happy with it, or are you wishing it were chin length with sideswept bangs?
Believe me, I know how hard it is to get a selfie with a cat on your lap. I've been trying and trying! So many cute moments, and I can't record them.
i wouldn't have had the patience to make the cookies perfect that late at night either- but i'm sure they taste delicious!

    1. Selfies with cats! Why aren't cats more cooperative?

They were good cookies, but they're more of a weekend project, not a weekend night project. Lesson learned!

  6. Zelda is such a cutie, and I love your hair! If you want shorter, that will be easy enough to do next time.

I had lunch with friends on Saturday, which was fun, and did get a fair bit of long-overdue office clean-out done yesterday, which is satisfying if much less fun. Not a bad weekend on balance.

  8. Your hair looks great! And I think you have a rockstar hair stylist. It's great that she pushes back a bit and has you take things slower versus making a drastic change you might regret. I think shoulder length hair looks great on you!

We had a fairly busy weekend. I had my 10 mile race on Saturday morning. On Sunday we had Sunday school in the am and then Paul had a drop-off birthday party at a minigolf course mid-day and then we had a family party at 4pm for a child of Phil's HS friend. It was SO FREAKING HOT. I am not ready for cool temps but I don't need temps approaching 90.

    1. It has been RIDICULOUSLY hot. You won't be surprised, but I am loving the return of summer. BRING ME THE HOT TEMPS.

  9. YOUR HAIR LOOKS MAGNIFICENT!

Ever since Marlowe died, Piper has been more and more needy. He is in my lap far more often, and I am not complaining. What kind of monster doesn't love a cat in their lap?

Football Sunday was at Theo's house this weekend, so I was Very Busy with all kinds of things. "Nana come" is his new favourite sentence.

    1. I don't know who doesn't love a cat in their lap. Those people who are "allergic to cats." I mean, don't those people know that Zyrtec and Flonase exist?

  10. Ditto Nance. Your hair really does look magnificent. You are so gorgeous Engie, and this haircut just highlights it perfectly. (For the record, I think you'd also look fabulous with sideswept bangs).

I used to make homemade pretzels but they were a bit of a faff so I stopped. This is a good reminder it would be fun to pull that recipe back out and do it again sometime. Then again, I've been pretty lazy in the kitchen lately.

Those cookies look delicious to me!

    1. I'm doing the bangs next time for sure. She can't stop me. (I mean, I guess she can.)

The cookies were delicious! Just too much work!

The hair looks so breezy and easy. So... are you going to lop it off to your chin next time??? And bangs! I love having bangs, but I don't cut my hair often enough to maintain them short as I would like, so they eventually become side swept bangs.
We had a chill weekend - i had to work one day and then we all went contra dancing on Sunday. That was fun.
I love fall colour! But I would like fall weather to go with the fall colour. I don't want 80 degree weather and fall colour. If the weather is 80 degrees and there is fall colour, I think the tree is sick or dying or some such.

I want no fall color AND 80 degrees. Alas, that is not to be.

  13. We went to that German festival our first year here. Haven't been back since. I guess that pretty much sums up how I felt about it.

We went up north for our anniversary and had a great time! No food trucks, but plenty of good eats regardless. Lots of fall colors though, so you'd probably be grumpy. :)

  15. I love your hair dresser and the conversation you two had. She's a keeper for sure. The lame German fest made me laugh as did Fiddly as Fuck. I've not heard of these naturally GF cookies, but fussy cookies don't really interest me at the moment. We were in Omaha and I didn't eat from a food truck but I did eat out a few times and it they were some awesome meals. Omaha is supposedly known as a foodie city.

  17. Your hair looks GREAT! I've always been the person who sits in my stylist's chair and is like, "We're doing bangs today!" And they just go along for the ride because I am basically fearless when it comes to my hair, ha. But it's always good to have a stylist who can make sure you're not doing something you'll regret. I love a good side-swept bang, so I'm excited you're going to do that next time!

    1. My stylist is a real keeper. She was so impressed when I grew out my hair during COVID. She knows me better than myself, but I do think I want sideswept bangs. Next time!

  18. Oh, your hair is GORGEOUS. I have the same kind of stylist, SO valuable. I have to have bangs, and I would always tell people not to have bangs if they don't have to have bangs.
Look at you, doing stuff! Were you grumpy by the end of baking those cookies? I would have been grumpy.

  19. Your new hair cut looks beautiful! How often do you usually go? I haven't been to a hairdresser again since... December? Oh, but I got a trim of my ends in June, if that counts.

Boo for fiddly recipes, but maybe you can adapt/simplify with additional attempts? Perhaps not at 11 on a work night? I mean, another GF cookie recipe you can turn to is nothing to sneeze at.
