Heat Wave*

This past weekend, I left the house. I KNOW. Big steps. Actually, I'm going to be leaving the house a fair amount in the next month, so be prepared for a lot of these fun updates.

The youngest child of one of my best friend's from high school graduated from high school himself and I trundled myself off to Michigan to go to his open house. Some of you might not be aware, but it's been HOT here in many parts of the United States, including where I live and where I was going.

After a harrowing drive in peak construction season (at one point I texted my husband that I had gone four miles in 45 minutes), I was told to arrive at the house where the open house would take place the next day, which was my friend's parents' house. No one was there despite the dozen cars in the driveway. I started to imagine I was in the middle of a horror movie and was slowly making my way to the barn where I (obviously) assumed I was going to find a massacre when my friend texted that they were doing family pictures and would be there soon and I should make myself at home.

My friend's parents, who I will call Mike and Judy because those are their names, are a delightful couple. And Judy immediately put me to work in the kitchen chopping fruit for a fruit salad and I WROTE DOWN THE RECIPE. You're welcome.

1 watermelon
4 cantaloupes
2 honeydew melons
3 big giant containers of strawberries
Red and green grapes (I didn't get exact measurements, but roughly 2-3 pounds of each)
2 pints blueberries
Those big bulk cans (you know the ones? you buy them at restaurant supply places?) of pineapple, pears, and mandarin oranges

Anyway, I did some kitchen stuff and then we went to my friend's house where I slept on the couch like I am twenty-two.

The next morning, it was NINETY DEGREES BEFORE I ATE BREAKFAST. I thought I was going to help do things like chop more fruit and put up photographs, but instead I helped put up a tent and decorate tables and did I mention that it was like a gazillion degrees?

One of only four photos I took all day.

By the time the party started, I was a bedraggled mess and while my friends could go home for a quick shower and change, I did not have the wardrobe for that options. Anyway, the graduate was celebrated, food was eaten, and no one passed out from heatstroke.

BUT IT WASN'T OVER because Saturday was also Mike and Judy's 50th wedding anniversary! So later that night a whole new group came over to the house, the grandkids all did funny and/or cringeworthy performances, and more cake was cut.

I went back to my friend's house, took the coldest shower I've ever taken in my life, ate pizza, and slept on their couch again.

The next morning, I stopped at South Haven in Michigan to enjoy an hour on the beach. Unfortunately, it was still eleventy billion degrees out, so my brilliant "go to the beach" idea was not unique to me.

Lake Michigan is amazing. White sand beaches, shells, and all the trappings of an ocean without the annoying salt water.

I took three times as many photos in that one hour than I did the entire day before. Then I drove home.

Monday was actually Hannah's sixth Gotcha Day, but I missed it, so I made Dr. BB take my photo with her yesterday morning. This was the best we got.

Do you want to see some outtakes?

The tongue!

Ears flat, cringing away from me - this looks like I abuse her.

Then I came home from work to find she is once again in GI distress. Please send good thoughts to me while my husband is at a conference and won't be home again until Friday night. Let me make it through.

When's the last time you were at a beach? Do you have travel plans this summer?

  1. Well, funnily enough the last time I was at the beach was last weekend...in Michigan! I was north of you. My goal was Sleeping Bear Dunes but when I saw that walking over the dune was a very challenging, multi hour hike, I knew that it was the wrong weekend to take that on. I pivoted and did a lighthouse binge instead. Back at home, Doggo has been taking some time to bake in the sun each day. Hubs and I have been joking that she's storing up heat for winter. Yesterday was finally too much for her and she refused to go outside during the day.

    Happy Gotcha Day to Hannah!

    1. We were both in Michigan!?!? What are the odds?

Hannah does love to just lay down in the sun. I don't get it? Aren't they hot?

  2. Woof, that sounds like a very hot and busy weekend! Happy belated Hannah day! I hope the GI distress passes (that sounds like the wrong word, sorry, it's 4:30 am) quickly. I love love love that dress! It's so cute.
In answer to your questions, I guess technically I'm at a beach quite often as we walk by it on on of our routes. There are quite a few beaches around here on Okanagan Lake. But the last time I enjoyed a beach like a person should enjoy a beach (i.e., not just skirting it with a giant dog) was in Mexico.

    1. I love that you and Rex get to go to beaches. That must be a nice part of your routine.

I've decided that I want to retire to a white sand beach place that allows me to take my dog to the beach. That sounds like heaven.

  3. We are on a river, and there is a small beach on both sides opposite each other. SoI suppose we get to one side every now and then although I don’t think of the small area as a beach. My goodness is has been hot, but it will only go up to 81 today, which isn’t bad for summer. It did get up to 95 on Monday.

  5. Happy Gotcha Day, Hannah!

You are a superstar friend for a) sleeping on a couch and b) doing outdoor work in this heat. In, presumably, dressy clothing, omg. I cannot with this heat. I had to take a cold shower at 6:30 this morning because I was already a dripping mess. I cannot even CONTEMPLATE drying my hair.

I LedOL when I read this: "My friend's parents, who I will call Mike and Judy because those are their names" Also, your murder fears are super relatable.

    I hate the beach.

    1. Last night I took a shower late (see: husband out of town and sick dog) and I used the hair dryer for approximately 30 seconds before I just ended up sleeping with wet hair. Yes, it looks like I slept in wet hair this morning BUT I DO NOT CARE. It is too hot for me.

I wish I had taken a video of myself as I explored the empty house and yard and how I grew increasingly convinced someone was about to jump out of a shrub with a machete and kill me. I probably listen to too many true crime podcasts.

  6. I just don't get going to the beach when it's broiling hot outside. The beach has no shade and awful sand and tons of strangers. How is that good? I hate the beach.

You are a really good sport for attending two outdoor events during this horrid heat wave, let alone helping with both and sleeping on a couch (especially with your leg pain). Your friend owes you big time, unless you are paying back for a previous huge favour.

Hannah should be more grateful and loving after six years of your care and indulgence. Still, you did allow The Cat to steal her crate, so...

    1. NANCE! There's the lulling sounds of the waves on the shore. You can go in the water and cool down whenever you want to (Lake Michigan water does not get warm). The beach is the PLACE! Especially if you go really early and the only people there are families with toddlers and early morning beach walkers.

I was happy to help my friend. The child who just graduated has the masculine version of my name if that gives you any indication of our relationship. He would do the same thing for me!

  7. This made me laugh!!! ""My friend's parents, who I will call Mike and Judy because those are their names."
It is SO hot here. In fact, I let the kids stay home from school yesterday. We have an almost-new school building but it doesn't have air conditioning. What?? Why??

I went to a rocky (not sandy) beach on Saturday! I think sandy beaches are generally overrated.

Congrats to Hannah on her Gotcha Day <3

    1. Who builds in 2025 without including AC?!?! Climate change is real!

You and Nance and your hating of sandy beaches is making me sad. But seashells! And walking through the water! It's PERFECTION.

  8. Too hot to think straight here. You had a busy weekend and are braver than I to attend anything outdoors. Hannah is a star.

    1. Hannah needs some posing lessons. That's my July goal. Take a photo of Hannah every day until she learns how to pose correctly! (LOLz. She will not let me do that.)

  9. I am sending good thoughts your way, hoping that the Hannah's GI stress goes away. I love the outtakes of you & Hannah! Your dress is so cute! You are my fashion icon.
Now I have that song in my head!

    1. Maybe I should do a roundup of my summer dresses. That sounds like fun for me (maybe not for everyone else!).
