Tuesday Things

 1) Just to update you on the mundane dreams of my life, Sunday night I dreamed that Dr. BB ate one of my yogurts and it threw off my entire breakfast for the week. I was pretty mad at him in my dream.

2) On Saturday morning I donated blood. I ate what I thought was a hearty breakfast of yogurt and granola, tea, and fruit (two giant strawberries and a pear). Things went well at first with my Sprite and orange stress ball.

But when I went over to the snack table, things went poorly. I had a bag of delicious potato chips and a bottle of water and things started...circling. I flagged someone down and they put me flat on the ground with my feet on a chair with an icepack. Then I slowly sat up again and the world was spinning and eventually I was back on one of the fancy chairs where I stayed with some Gatorade for an hour. I finally texted Dr. BB to come get me. LOL.

I honestly was miserable for the rest of the day.

The phlebotomist was horrified at my breakfast. "That ain't hearty, girl. You need some eggs, bacon, and peanut butter toast." Lesson learned, I guess.

3) Guess who came to my office yesterday for an hour while her person was in a meeting. If you guessed it was Blanche the Puppy, you're right! She's 8.5 pounds now, which puts her at just about the size of Zelda. Also, she's a little rascal and I hardly got any work done while she was hanging out with me.

4) I hosted book club on Sunday night and Hannah did an amazing job. She expected everyone to give her sweet potatoes and they did and then she laid down next to me the whole night. Thumbs up. Next, we'll have to find some time to do a game night where we have more than three people over. Maybe some men. Let's see how that goes!

What do you consider to be a hearty breakfast?

  1. Oatmeal lands as “hearty” to me, or maybe peanut butter toast with fruit? I’m sorry about your circling but grateful for you giving blood. And, what a cute pup! I’d get nothing done with a dog available for hangs, I have a feeling.

    1. Right? There are oats in the granola! Why isn't my breakfast hearty? It's literally what I eat every morning and it holds me until lunch.

No work was done with Blanche around, I have to admit.

  2. Yikes! Yogurt and granola would not cut it for me. I've been eating mostly breakfast sandwiches with the occasional breakfast burrito and a very rare serving of oatmeal made with half milk/half water topped with brown sugar. I've found that I don't do well on low fat meals (yeah I know the oatmeal is low fat, but it's the exception to the rule and I don't have it very often which kind of proves my point).

Yay for a puppy visit at work! It's true that you can't get anything done when you're on puppy duty - ask me how I know - but who needs to get stuff done.

Yay also for house guests with sweet potatoes. They are a dog's best friend.

    1. But it's Greek yogurt. It's what I eat EVERY MORNING and it gets me through until lunch. I knew I didn't even have to get through lunch because I would get a snack after donating. I find actual oatmeal pretty gross, as I do most hot breakfast cereals.

  3. Great job Hannah!!! Lol, I love that she's just like "where are my sweet potatoes, ladies?" That would be Rex too, he can recognize the older ladies on the walking path who carry treats for random dogs from so far away. Like, I won't be able to recognize them until I'm closer and suddenly he's pulling like there's no tomorrow.
I have the same breakfast every day and - is it hearty? It feels hearty to me. It's a spinach smoothie. I use a cup of cashew milk, two heaping tbsp nut butter, usually some cinnamon, a frozen banana, and like seven cups of spinach.
But importantly, you reminded me I haven't donated blood in a long time. I have super low blood pressure so it takes forever, and I've put it off a lot. I should just mark off an afternoon and go!

    1. Yes, she was nudging their hands waiting for a treat. I thought it was so cute, although I guess it's not behavior we really want to encourage. I just think it's better behavior than growling and lunging!

I really only donate blood when it's at the church behind my house AND someone calls to ask me to do so. But I do feel like it's an easy enough ask to save lives.

  4. Really- you felt that bad because your breakfast wasn't "hearty" enough? I would have thought your breakfast was fine! I usually have oatmeal, or right now I'm eating a Dave's Killer Bagel with "breakfast tofu" (recipe from No Meat Athlete).
Hannah is such a good girl! And, Blanche... yes, I would have trouble getting much work done with her around too.

    1. Thank you, Jenny! I thought it was fine, too. How much heartier do I need to be?!

  5. Yay, Hannah! The way to any dog's heart is through its stomach. Zydrunas also dislikes men, but he finds them far less threatening to World Security if they present him with treats.

I am not a breakfast person, and before I retired, I didn't eat breakfast or lunch. I can't really eat first thing in the morning, so I just had coffee. Lunch at school was only 20 minutes, so I used that time for prep. Now, I eat a slice of Dave's Killer Bread, toasted, with peanut butter and topped with fruit, like berries or banana at about 10:00 or so every day and have coffee.

    1. Wait...you didn't eat breakfast or lunch while you were working? I cannot imagine this. I get grumpy if I have to go more than two hours without food!

  6. I thought chips were good on any occasion.

    1. I only allow myself chips on special occasions because otherwise I would be an addict. But giving blood seemed like a special enough occasion and they did hit right.

  7. I love PB toast with banana or yogurt/cottage cheese with nuts/nut butter/seeds raisins. But more often than not I don't eat breakfast.
Blanche is actually too cute. I don't have a dog and will likely never own a dog, but I want to hop in my car and drive to your office immediately and hang out with her.

    1. How are people not waking up absolutely famished? If I skip a meal, it's not going to be breakfast. I generally haven't eating for more than twelve hours when I wake up and I want to eat EVERYTHING.

Blanche IS cute and sweet and perfect.

  8. A hearty breakfast to me includes protein, so some scrambled eggs and toast would be hearty. I haven't donated blood in ages as I assume all the drugs I am on would make me ineligible. I should probably find out if that is actually the case. Phil only donates during the winter months. It wipes him out for several days so he doesn't donate when its running season for him. I never got dizzy but my bp is so slow that I would run the risk of not getting the donation in within the time limit. I found that holding a warm object would help speed things up!

    1. It's Greek yogurt, so there's plenty of protein! We don't do toast in our house. LOL.

I only donate a couple of times a year. I guess I could donate every eight weeks, but it really does wipe me out for DAYS.

    2. I was told I can’t donate anymore since RA, Lisa.

  9. Hearty breakfast? Eggs and toast/bagel. A piece of fruit. Black coffee. I've never given blood, my scrawny veins wouldn't be amenable to doing it, I am told.

    1. Because we don't have bread in our house, I sometimes forget that bread/bagels are a good source of carbs! Duly noted that next time I donate blood, I should probably eat breakfast out and eat earlier than 45 minutes before I donate.

  10. I would probably have been as horrified as your phlebotomist that that was all you had to eat before giving blood. Although I guess it matters how big the portions were. I often have yogurt and fruit for breakfast. I do put nuts on it to up the protein. And then I'll have a hard boiled egg and a banana if I'm still feeling hungry. Still, I don't know that I would call that a "hearty" breakfast. I feel like a hearty breakfast is bacon, eggs, pancakes, waffles, hash browns and I don't feel up for eating (or cooking) that every day.

    1. I guess I think of my breakfast as hearty because it's what I eat every day and it never lets me down. LOL. But I see what other people are saying. I could definitely scramble up an egg or two and add some cheese to my regular breakfast before I donate again. Although, to be honest, this has made me nervous about donating in the future.

  11. A hearty breakfast to me would include a ham and cheese omelet. Bonus if there are potatoes. I do a protein bar and oatmeal with fruit and a protein shake usually, but the omelet if we go out to breakfast. I pass out so easily, thanks to vaso vagel issues. I had to scroll by the photo of your arm 'hooked up' - my hands started to get weak just looking at it. The last time I gave blood - it didn't end well. I started to faint and wanted so badly to fall asleep. The people wouldn't let me. I had other issues, like almost not making it to the bathroom - unable to walk at first. I was told not to donate blood - maybe ever? But I applaud you for doing it.

May the force be with the family member who decides to eat my last yogurt. Hooray for Hannah being such a good girl. Sweet potatoes motivate me too.

    1. Potatoes!! That is the answer. People keep talking about toast but that's not really a good option for me. LOL.

  12. I'm so sorry you did something virtuous and got zapped with a dizzy spell, Engie. No fair!
(Your breakfast sounds fine to me, BTW. Are you afraid of needles and things?)
I make the human and puppy kids eggs every morning, but it's just tea for me. For years, my new year's resolution was to eat a hearty breakfast, but I've just decided to listen to my body.

    1. I don't love needles and things, but you actually see very little of it when you're donating (unless you're interested and look - but I think you know that I look away and let them do their thing).

I am FAMISHED when I wake up and feel like a good breakfast is my reward for not eating for hours and hours.

  13. Your breakfast is fine for every day, but not when your body has to give up a PINT OF BLOOD, MISSY. Also, make sure you drink a ton of water first. I can’t donate anymore since my RA diagnosis, but I used to give often. It always made me tired and I would come home and take a nap, and Ted would make steak for dinner.

Once when I was about 19 or 20, I went with a friend to give blood, and they had us at this counter like a diner to eat our donuts (DONUTS ON SATURDAYS was the big draw to go in, for sure). I felt woozy, and turned to him and made a weird noise and fell against him. He thought I was kidding, laughed, and shrugged me off, where I collapsed to the floor. I haven’t fainted many times (unlike you! Hey, maybe that breakfast really ISN’T enough for you?) but that was one of them. The nurse was HORRIFIED and thought he was an ass.

Funny note, we were telling that story and laughing about it, and he said, “That’s maybe the weirdest date I’ve been on”, and I thought, “Date?” Apparently we were on a date.

    1. If you were on a date, that was NOT the way to handle you falling against him! What an interesting reaction on his part - I might agree with the nurse that he was an ass.

Maybe more water is the answer. I had a glass of water and a mug of tea, but maybe that wasn't quite enough.

  14. Unpopular opinion perhaps, but (shhh), I don't eat breakfast anymore. Changed my life.

    1. Definitely an unpopular opinion with me. Breakfast is life.

  15. I had that same experience when I gave blood a few years ago. I didn't fully pass out, but I couldn't get out of the chair for 2 hours. I watched people stroll in, give blood, and walk out like it was nothing. People were doing it on their lunch hours and going back to work! How?
Also, I have "difficult veins", had to be prodded several times, and ended up with a huge bruise that really hurt. I'm sorry to say I haven't given blood since then...I donate money instead. Anyway, bravo to you for donating blood - it's truly a gift of life.

    1. Right? People donated, walked over, grabbed some water and baked goods, and left. Meanwhile, I was sort of out of it for the rest of the day. Sheesh. Human bodies are weird. Oh, well, I think it's worth it to save lives. When my mom was in the ICU she had several blood transfusions and she always joked that they made her feel like Superwoman, so I'm all about giving back as much as I can.

  17. I would have thought that was a decent breakfast to give blood too. Sucks that it threw off your whole day, but giving blood is such a cool thing to do - you just sit there and then get a treat and feel like a Good Person. But then PUPPY AT WORK. And Hannah at book club! Lucy does pretty well at book club, after the initial bark-fest when everyone arrives.

  18. I agree with your thoughts on skipping breakfast. I know it's a cliche, but that really is the most important meal of the day (for me, at least)! Your breakfast sounds pretty hearty. If you ever do go the bagel route, you can pick up a bag of frozen Bagels Forever for like $2. They're delicious and not gigantic like so many bagels; I find them the perfect size really.
