How Often Do You...?

1) Go to the office/place of work?

I go to the office five days a week. It says in my contract that I can work from home one day a week and if something comes up that means I have to be at home, I do occasionally work at home. However, I hate working at home because it means it's harder for students to do walk-ins and I don't have an extra monitor so it's hard to do some of my work.

2) Text your best friend? Your parents? Your siblings? Your children?

My BFF and I usually text 2-3 times a week. I text my mom at least once a week. I don't talk to my sister. I have no children.

3) Vacuum the floor? Clean the shower? Completely replace the litter?

I vacuum the floor once a week. I probably should do it two or three times a week, but I need natural light to do it and I just run out of natural light when I'm at home during the week. Hmm. Maybe this is making a case for me to work from home once a week. It's generally a Sunday chore.

I rarely clean the shower. Maybe every few months? It's gross because we have hard water and it's impossible to get it to look clean even when it is clean. We use Scrubbing Bubbles Daily Shower Cleaner after every shower to increase the amount of time between cleanings.

We rarely completely replace the litter in the litter box. We scoop the box once or twice a day.

4) Read a book?

Every day. I generally spend at least an hour reading every day - at least half an hour first thing and at least half an hour before bed. Most days I fit in reading whenever I can.

5) Go "shopping"?

Two weekends ago I was on State Street in Madison and I found myself just wandering around adorable stores and buying funny greeting cards and stickers about being the grammar police. It occurred to me that the last time I leisurely walked around stores was pre-pandemic. I'm very mission oriented and always have a list when I go to any store. I went to Walgreen's the other day and my list read - fish oil, magnesium, water, Dove scrub, and ELF (I wanted to see what ELF products I could buy there instead of going to Ulta). I looked at nothing else.

****************

What about you? How often do you do these things?

  1. 1) I don't have a job, so never.
    2) It kind of depends. I call my mother once a week. I text friends fairly regularly depending on the friend. The kids, that also depends. Jake still lives with us but sometimes I text him when he's not around. Mark I probably text a couple times a week. I very, very rarely text my brothers.
    3) I have no cat, so never on the litter. The floor gets vacuumed every couple of days because Rex's paws are giant and always track in dirt no matter what I do. I clean the shower every other day. Probably if my answer for 1) was different, my answer for this would also be different.
    4) Every day
    5) Does shopping mean grocery shopping? Then at least once a week, twice if we do a Costco run. I only go shopping for other things when the need arises (i.e., birthday or something, my group of girls are really into birthday gifts and so I will shop when we are having a lunch for one of them)

    1. Wait...you clean the shower every other day? This does not compute in my brain. It's like the people who change the sheets every week or the towels every day. How does that even work? I need more details, Nicole.

No, I don't mean grocery shopping. I mean leisure shopping. I almost never do it!

    2. I change the sheets weekly, and the towels every three days or so. I find more frequent cleanings of the shower to be easier, because it's easier to just spray and wipe with a scrubbie than to really scour everything. Also I have three glass doors on the shower, and I don't like the water marks to show.

  2. 1) Go to the office/place of work?
    I'm blissfully retired, thank you.
    2) Text your best friend? Your parents? Your siblings? Your children?
I text with my BFF about once a week or so. My mother and I text about the same. My sisters and brother--it depends what family news/crisis/need is happening. I text with my children pretty much daily.
    3) Vacuum the floor? Clean the shower? Completely replace the litter?
Vacuuming happens every other day; shower cleaning after every shower; I use clumping litter, so I never completely replace it.
    4) Read a book?
I read every day unless I have a headache.
    5) Go "shopping"?
Like for something other than groceries? Hardly ever. I need new glasses and am dreading looking for frames (I miss wearing contacts SO MUCH). Today, I'm going to get birdseed--does that count?
Sometimes, I do go to a shopping centre and browse stores like TJ Maxx and Home Goods, but I usually have a mission (new summer tops, peppercorns, unusual flavours of jam for my mother).

    1. Ah, you are one of those parents who text their children daily. Interesting. I sometimes wonder if my mom is upset that I don't text her all the dang time about everything I do.

I think we are very similar shoppers. I rarely go someplace unless I have a mission in mind. But that trip down State Street was fun! Maybe I should have more aimless shopping in my life.

  3. 1) Five days a week! It's the nature of my job- you can't do massage remotely.
    2) It varies. The funny thing is, I probably text my daughter at least once a day and she LIVES WITH ME. My son- several times a week. Lots of times I'll send him photos of the cat. And I text back and forth with my sister on a regular basis, but once again that varies. Sometimes we'll send each other photos of food.
    3) I would prefer not to answer this one, on the grounds that it might incriminate me. I was glad to see your answer about the litter box. I haven't cleaned the whole thing in... a while.
    4) Every day!!!
    5) If you include grocery shopping- several times a week (sigh.) I do think it's fun to just browse around a store (like Marshalls or TJ Maxx), or the mall, occasionally, but I don't do it often.

    1. The experts say you're supposed to put brand new litter in ONCE A WEEK. What? Who does that? I might do it two or three times a year. Maybe. But I swear we scoop it daily!

I think the thing is that there aren't really place to just go shopping in my town, so I'd have to drive somewhere and I hate leaving my town. LOL. But it was fun to just go by myself for a couple of hours.

  4. I love posts like this!
    1) Go to the office/place of work?
I work from home part-time so...never AND always?
    2) Text your best friend? Your parents? Your siblings? Your children?
I text my BFF an average of 5 times/week? I text one of my sister's regularly (1-2x/week), my other sister + my brother VERY infrequently. I used to text my mother every day but then we got out of the habit - long story! - and now we rarely text. Though 1/3 of the year they live within easy walking distance so I see her at least once a week over that period. Neither of my kids has a phone yet.
    3) Vacuum the floor? Clean the shower? Completely replace the litter?
I vacuum when I feel like I have the time. It might happen 7x one week, and once the following week. I hate cleaning the shower and refuse to answer this. I don't have a cat so, thankfully, NEVER.
    4) Read a book?
I'd say I read 4/7 days. But it really happens in spurts. It depends on my schedule, if my husband is home or travelling, and the time of year. Definitely NOT daily.
    5) Go "shopping"?
I shop for groceries several times a week and love it. I generally browse at at least one thrift store a week while I wait for one kid to finish an activity in a neighbouring town. But just browsing regular stores and/or buying clothes at a retail spot makes me recoil with horror. I loathe malls.

  5. I am here for this post!

Sigh, I work 5 days a week but thank heaven I have not had to go to an office since 2020. I understand why your job is better in person, but mine is not. I work with confidential information, so I was always trying to find conference rooms every time I needed to talk to someone, having to lock my computer every time that I walked away, and having to "look busy" when I just needed a five minute break after finishing a project.

Hubs is the #1 recipient of my texts. Everyone else is pretty infrequent.

1x/week with cleaning! When I catsit for our neighbors, I scoop every few days. They have clumping litter so I've never had to do a full change.

I read most days, usually right before bed.

My last grocery store run was last night! Last week I got influenced by a Hungry Runner Girl post and hit up Amazon for an origami book and packing cubes. I love the origami book, and TBD if the cubes turn out to be the game changers that everyone swears that they are.

    1. Grocery shopping is boring, though. Most people do it every day or once a week. If someone told me that they only go once a month or something, I'd be into hearing about that!

I also work with confidential information and that's why it's easier for me to go into the office! I have an office with a door that can close and I can access the shared drives with files that I need. I probably could set it up so that I can get the shared drives through a VPN at my house, but then I'd have to talk to an IT person. LOL.

Right now, I go to work 5 days a week. I do not like teaching virtually. And for a small liberal arts college, it's best to be in person. I used to do the "lab" day remotely - problem solving and homework questions- one day a week, but my recent classes needed more direct attention, so I come in. However, this year I'm actually getting paid for the lab hour, so I guess it's fine.
I Skype-text my sister/BFF every day . We share wordle and waffle scores if nothing else. My parents are dead, but I used to call at least once a week , if not 2 or 3 times. Most of my kids text or Skype about once a week. We share cat photos a lot.
I vacuum a few times a week, and it should be every day. The shower is weekly. I scoop the poop daily and completely change the litter and scrub out the boxes monthly.
I read every day- and I can fit a lot of reading in the week if I have good books and free time.
I go shopping a lot. I usually do a Sunday grocery run, a few trips midweek to get things like milk or bananas, another trip if I need to get something at Aldi's or the more expensive grocery store, and then if there are prescriptions to pick up, hit the pharmacy. I also try to get to the warehouse club about once a month. I like shopping, but I wish I was a little more efficient at it. But right now I fit in short trips on my way home from work before the kids are home from school, so it works well.

    1. Wow! Your house is considerably cleaner than mine. It would never occur to me to change the litter monthly!

What you are describing is getting groceries, not shopping. LOL. My husband and I are very efficient grocery shoppers. Our list is in order by aisle. We have a system for the checkout. We're really good at groceries. LOL. I'm inordinately proud of this.

  7. Like Birchie, I am HERE for this post!

    1) Go to the office/place of work? I've worked from home since 2020, but before that I was 5 days a week at our main office. Now I go in maybe once every couple of months maybe, if we're doing a team get-together for lunch (Very food-motivated lol). For our Open Enrollment period in November, I'm in every day, either at the main location or one of our branches. It's bittersweet to be there because my old office was given to my new manager, so I have to find a spot to hotel. I'm in HR, so most of what I do is confidential, which means I get very, very little actual work done when I'm in, but the occasional social contact is nice.
    2) Text your best friend? Your parents? Your siblings? Your children? I guess you could say my best friend is my husband, and we usually text several times a day, even though we live together. Sending memes and cute pictures of our cats, mostly. I try to text my mom at least every other day or so since she lives alone, and usually text with either my dad or my stepmother at least once a week. My youngest brother just doesn't respond to texts and never has, so I only text him a few times a year. My other brother is busy with a young child, so he also doesn't really respond but I reach out to him more because I know he's just overwhelmed right now and needs support. I text my sister once every weekday for accountability once I've completed my exercise for the day, and also randomly about something else once or twice a week.
    3) Vacuum the floor? Clean the shower? Completely replace the litter? We don't actually own a vacuum, but I run roomba upstairs (bedrooms/offices) and in the kitchen every weekend. I have not roombied in the living room or finished basement in a really, really long time, since that's where the majority of our cat toys end up and there's other stuff to get off the floor and it is just a huge pain. When we could afford a housecleaner, they would vacuum when they came every other month. Same with cleaning the shower. So, it's been awhile. I scrub out the tub prior to taking a bath, which happens a few times a year... Litter boxes get fully replaced maybe two or three times a year? We use clumping litter, so it's not really necessary more than that, but even with clumping litter eventually there comes a point where it's just old and the box needs to be scrubbed, etc.
    4) Read a book? Every day. I'm a very fast reader, so that's pretty much literal, if it's a book I've read before. If it's new to me, I can usually finish one in a few days, depending on how late I stay up (which, with a new book, is almost always past an advisable bedtime)
    5) Go "shopping"? I don't shop very much, except for groceries. I probably go to the grocery store two or three times a week. I like browsing Marshalls or TJ Maxx, but usually only go once or twice a year around the holidays.

  11. Fun post!!

    1. I'm required to be in 3 days/week but my work travel counts. I did not go in for 2 months while recovering from surgery/dealing with the splint so I got some nastygrams but my boss said to ignore them. Phil goes in 4-5 days/week. He does not enjoy working from home but he does not have a good set up - he just has a small surface laptop. In the office he has 2-3 screens and that is the ideal set up. I have a monitor in my office and put my laptop on a stack of books so they are level with each other.
    2. I message friends several times/week. I text my parents when I have photos to share of the boys. I text my younger sister at least once/week but it varies based on what is going on in our lives.
    3. Phil does the cleaning in our house since he refuses to hire a cleaner. We had one at one point but he didn't like paying people to "clean up our mess" so the agreement was that he would do the cleaning since he didn't want to pay for that service. When we had a cat, he also cleaned the litter box.
    4. I read a book every day. I cannot imagine a day going by without reading! I wonder how long streak of reading every day is? My kindle tells me I've read on my kindle or the kindle ap for 1,112 days in a row. But my streak is much longer than that since I didn't always exclusively read on my kindle like I do these days.
    5. I loathe shopping so have not gone shopping in quite some time.

  12. -How often I go into work depends on what is going on. We work 6 day weeks, so when I'm working on a show, I'm in six days a week. If I'm between shows and on contract, I go in 3-5 days a week depending on how I use my hours.
-I think I text with my parents a couple times a week. I don't know who would be my BFF, but I have some friends whom I text a couple times a week. I don't think I have a "text every day" person - maybe my Husband? Though my sister in law and I talk on the phone two or three times a week. d
-We have biweekly cleaners who run the vacuum/ swiffer. We don't really have carpets, just a couple runners and rugs. Ditto the shower. We don't have a cat.
-I try to read every day. Sometimes I scroll instead. Sigh. I should just read more.
-Shopping as a recreational activity? Or as a "I have to pick something up" activity? I tend to get very distracted when I shop - I think I'm very much the opposite of you with your list. I'm the person who goes to Target to pick up pads and socks and leaves with mixing bowls and Post its and Cadbury mini eggs and whatever else shiny I see. It's kind of a problem, so I try to avoid going to the store unless I have to. Say what you will about Amazon, being able to order just the things on my list and have it show up without me buying anything else works really well for me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is a really good point about Amazon shopping!

      Delete
    2. The thing is that I would never go by the Post Its or Cadbury eggs or whatever because I am on a mission when I am in a store like Target. I am there for X items (let's be honest, it's usually greeting cards and/or stickers) and I just don't go anywhere else. As I'm getting older, I'm also finding fewer and fewer things I want to buy. Like, I don't need anymore mixing bowls or Post Its? So it's less about willpower and knowing that there's no place to store those items when I get home.

  13. 1) Three times a week. I would love some at-home work. I love my job, but I have sensory issues and chronic pain, and having to be 'at' a place is bad for these.
    2) My husband daily, my daughter daily, my son weekly, my sister monthly (we are close but she's a phone talker and I'm an emailer, so it's awkward), and my group chat of friends daily.
3)We have a cleaner every two weeks.
4)Every day, two hours or more

    3. I vacuum once a week, but I have a cordless upright (that was recommended by Elisabeth) for little touch-ups, and it's awesome! For the shower, I use an O'Cedar microfiber cloth mop to dry it out after every use. I know...every use? But, it only takes a minute, I don't even have to bend over, and it really helps keep it from growing things. I give it a more thorough cleaning once a month. (And I can wash the mop heads in the washing machine.)

  20. 1) I'm lucky to only have to make the commute to Madison 2x/week. I WFH the other three days.

    2) I send a handful of texts a week. My parents, one or two. My kids or sibling, rarely (though if the occasion permits, we end up with lengthy conversations). Tara, once a day. I count her as my bestie.

    3) I'm more likely to vacuum the ceiling than the floor (at least when there are bugs crawling around up there). Litterboxes average every other day, though I should probably make that a daily chore.

    4) Ideally, three times a day: in the morning on the treadmill, at lunch, and before bed. This works out to 1-2 hours most days (but less for about six months out of the year, when I trade in the treadmill for the great outdoors).

    (1) N/A

    (2) I have a weekly video call with my parents and brother, and probably text them 4/5 times per week. I text my friends a few times a week and usually have at least one phone call per week with various friends. Unfortunately due to traveling, I also am in a lot of FB and WhatsApp groups with a lot of texting about various activities and events, so I probably communicate with these a few times a week as well. However, as a general rule, my texting is like your grocery shopping; I don't really do it just "for fun," it is more of a way to provide information or plan things. I have had to flip that script a little since I am no longer seeing people in person.

    (3) Never x 3. (but when I was home, no vacuum, but I did sweep pretty much every day. I cleaned the shower/tub once a month, and made the cat poop outside, so cleaned the litter maybe once per year).

    (4) I used to say every day, but recently I would say 6x per week. I normally listen to audiobooks when I run/walk (but have been slacking with that a little) and read my ebook when I am about to go to bed, but that is happening about 4x a week these days.

    (5) I hate shopping. I am like you; if I need something I will get it, but I am not going to wander/browse. No thanks. However, I have been going grocery shopping about 4-5x a week, buying just a few things each time due to travel and tiny fridges.
