The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo is the latest installment in the delightful Singing Hills Cycle series of novellas.
Chih, our traveling cleric, accompanies a young bridge to her wedding to a ruler of a crumbling empire. Chih is without her bird, Almost Brilliant, and is quite alone. She and the bride-to-be find themselves roaming the estate at night, creeped out by what they find. And soon the question of who the monsters really are becomes real.
I think...I don't understand the plot of this book? I found it super confusing. I have not rated anything in this series less than 4/5 stars, but I did not care for this book. I think I would recommend people skip it if they were reading the series. You won't miss anything!

Lines of note:
It seemed to them like a poor guarantee for a young woman's happiness, but then, what in life gave guarantees? (timestamp 11:05)
...now they could see that the Phan's shadows on the wall sometimes broke from their casters to laugh and to dance before falling back in strict tendence to their duties. (timestamp 2:00:37)

Yes, this doesn't sound great! Good to know you could read the series but skip this one.
ReplyDeleteThe series is excellent and I highly recommend it!
DeleteThe series does look cool.
ReplyDeleteToo bad it didn't live up to the others in the series. Of course, a book with no hat mentions is bound to disappoint.
