18.1 Hat - Easter recap

Endless Days

Easter was delightful. There were lemon Kit Kats, a super fun egg hunt, my niblings tolerating my "pretend you like each other" as the camera was aimed at them, a birthday cake, and too many squishmallows to count.

We have not yet had time to go through the camera and figure out if I took any decent photos, but let me leave you with two hilarious photos that I took on my phone.

My husband was wearing his sunglasses inside. Why? No one knows. I thought that was hilarious.

My FIL's wife has this creepy (very large) rabbit and we all sort of avoid the entire room where it lives. This year I decided my SIL and I should have our photo taken with it. It's so creepy. My SIL and I were joking that we should definitely include this one on our 2024 Christmas cards.

Favorite memories (in no order):
Joking with my nephew about his idea of parachuting people out of planes above their final destination cities when they have to fly over them for connecting flights
How some of the oldest niblings were the last to find all their hidden eggs
When a bunch of the kids were having a concert in the piano room (this isn't as pretentious as it sounds - my FIL's wife is a semi-professional musician), I was chatting with one of my nieces at the kitchen counter as we both kept slamming pound cake and leftover egg casserole
My BIL talking to me about whether or not he should read the newest Robert Galbraith even though he just finished The Ink Black Heart

Oh! Good accidental segue (good job, NGS). My BIL has been newly promoted to a judgeship. His investiture is in early May (I will not be able to attend; hopefully my husband will be able to). What gifts does one get a new judge?!

I have seriously considered a personalized bobblehead, but I'm not sure it could get here in time. His wife has vetoed any gavel-themed items. Maybe some socks? A snarky journal? I have never had this particular challenging gift-giving occasion before and probably never will. I have to live up to my gift-giving reputation! (I'd never actually give this to him because he's a lovely man who I've never heard swear, but this candle made me laugh a lot.)

How was your Easter? What would you buy for a newly minted judge?

  1. Oh Engie, I love those photos of you! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the one with you and Dr BB, I think he should now wear sunglasses inside, start that trend! Or channel his inner Corey Hart. Wait, that was at night, not inside. Anyway, love that photo and the one of the rabbit cracks me up. It's as big as the giant Costco bears, and I've always wondered who buys those things. Now I know, it's your FIL's wife. As for the gift, I have no idea, but judge socks would be amazing.

    1. I am NOT suggesting to my husband that he forever wear his sunglasses inside. I fear I'd never see his lovely eyes ever again.

I wish I knew about the quality of the socks. I'm hesitant to get him crappy cotton ones he'd never wear - that violates all my principles about buying things people can use!!

  2. I like the candle, seriously. But you could always opt for a biography of a really great SCOTUS member, like Justice Thurgood Marshall or Justice RBG. Or the Jeffrey Toobin book about the inner workings of the Supreme Court (disregarding his fall from grace a couple of years ago). But believe it or not, you can just plug in "gift for a judge" into Amazon, and a bunch of stuff comes up that's not all crap.

I love that photo of you and the Really Big Bunny. (It's bigger than the Eiffel Tower! It can swat down helicopters!)

    1. OOohhhhh...a book is a great idea because he's a big reader. I'll have to think on that. Maybe a book with a consumable? Nice call!

  3. Wow, Nance had some good suggestions! I want to hear what you decide to get him.
So, does that rabbit live in that room always, or is it just for Easter? Just curious!
Sounds like you had a really nice Easter and yes- your BIL should definitely read The Running Grace.

    1. The rabbit is just an Easter thing. If it were there year round, I think I would revolt and never go visit them again!!

  4. Your Easter sounds lovely, Engie. And I love those first two photos so much! The one of you and Prof. BB has perfect smiles and you're both so good-looking (wow), and that first picture makes me feel like I'm in summer mode just by looking at it.

Nance's idea is so cool, I plugged the search into google and got some nice Etsy hits too.

  5. What a lovely holiday! I totally LOL'd at "this isn't as pretentious as it sounds" ha ha ha. And what you were doing during the concert ;)

    1. Look, it was lovely listening to the concert from two rooms away! And I enjoyed eating with my niece as if we had not just had a giant brunch. LOL.

  6. That candle!!

Also, that bunny. Um, yikes! Also...where does she store it all year?! And please, please, please don't tell me it out all year round?

    1. I sort of want to buy him that candle. Maybe I'll text his wife and see if it's too inappropriate for him.

I don't know where the rabbit is stored the rest of the year, but their basement has more square footage than our entire house (this is a true fact), so I suspect it's in the basement somewhere.

  7. Oh, what a lovely Easter! I can't imagine what I would get for a judge; probably something that makes a decision for them (here's dinner for a Friday) since so much of judge-ing seems to be about decisions (but that might just be my indecisiveness!)... PS: I've had "he wears his sunglasses inside" to the tune of "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night" in my head since I read this, haha!!

    1. Ha! I love the idea of giving someone a day free of decisions. Wouldn't that be lovely? Someone else picks out the clothes, the food, the plans for the day...what a dreamscape.

  8. Oh man-- my cousin is a judge and I can't believe I haven't sent her that candle yet!!

    1. I asked my SIL (the new judge's wife) and she said it would be fine! Yay! I think he's going to get the candle and a book.

  9. Of course, I’m one of those people who would love a giant bunny, and I’d make him some new eyes, and probably some bunny clothing! I love the photo. Your Easter sounds like it was lots of fun!

    1. I have a thing about rabbits, which is to say that I sort of don't like them. It's not quite a phobia, but it's not NOT a phobia. This giant rabbit scares the bejeesus out of me.

  10. Ok, yes, my first thought was also "Where do they store that bunny??!" I would not want to deal with that!! But it sounds like they perhaps a lot more storage space than we have. lol.

Cute pics! That one of you and your husband is adorable. :) The candle is funny and as I am sure he is not likely to keep a candle in his work office, anyway, you don't have to worry about it being something work appropriate. ;)

    1. I wouldn't want to have to store that thing, either. Even if it was in the basement. Could you imagine running into that thing while you're innocently looking for the tote with the winter clothes in it? Argh!

The issue with the candle is that he wouldn't keep it in his work office, but he has small children, so home isn't awesome, either. His wife gave it the thumb's up, though, so yay!

  11. Those bunny eyes are creep-tastic.
I didn't know Lemon Kit Kats were a thing and now I am so intrigued.
We spent Easter in California, where we went to Mass (lovely, but empty. I guess Berkeley is not a huge Catholic community), looked for eggs (which we left in California, much to the 4 year old's chagrin), and then went to the park and then the emergency room.
When I think of judges, I'm reminded of a story that I read once, about judicial fashion, where there was this one judge who would run down the hallways, flapping his robes, declaring, "I'm Batman! I'm Batman!" I think if ever I had a judicial robe I might do that. Maybe just once.

    1. The lemon Kit Kats were sooooo good. I mean, I like a regular Kit Kat, too, don't get me wrong. It's best there were a limited supply available over Easter or I'd be eating on the hour.

I'll have to see if my BIL will let me do a Batman meme of him in his robes. LOL.

  13. You and your Hollywood husband are too cute! That big bunny? not.so.much. :)
Hmmmm....I'm a big fan of the Candle as a gift; other than that, I can be of no help!
