Happy National Love Your Pet Day!

Today is National Love Your Pet Day. Every day is Love Your Pet Day in my world.

Zelda Belda is our alarm clock most days. She stands at the bottom of the stairway and meows under the door. She's the tiniest person in our house, but definitely is the loudest and hungriest. She is my soulmate. She is cuddly, fuzzy, and loves nothing more than to stick her entire face in my mouth. She is a constant source of amusement when she jumps and lands like a brick so that we can tell Zelda has jumped from entirely different floors of the house. She loves to play for about thirty seconds and then begin grooming, as if she is embarrassed that you caught her chasing a ball. She's twelve now, but you wouldn't know it. She still runs around with the zoomies, stands up to Hannah (thwack thwack thwack on Hannah's muzzle makes Hannah come to us for comfort), and has enough sass to carry the whole household.

She's also beautiful. Look at those crazy whiskers - they're all different colors and go in all different directions. Her eyes have the most perfect makeup and the green is the deepest you can possibly find in nature. She doesn't like being brushed, but tolerates me swiping at her with a Furminator once a day for twenty seconds. She's unbelievably soft and loves chin and tailbone scritches. She's the most flexible creature in the house and loves to show how long her spine is, bragging to the rest of us. She is my bestest kitty friend in the world.

Hannah Banana is, temperamentally, the exact opposite of the cat. She is frightened of so many things and would never dare to bop a creature four times her size on the nose. She loves to chew sticks, sniff all the sniffs, and chase the cat. She hates baths, men, and other dogs in her yard. She loves to do training and while she's not going to win any trophies for her dancing, she winds between my legs and when she comes to a stop between my legs and looks up at me with those eyes, I nearly die. Her trust was hard-earned and I will never take it for granted.

Her health is so much better these days. Now that she is not in pain regularly, we are seeing bits of her personality we never saw before. She gets the zoomies on walks and there's nothing I can do except hold the leash and let her run around in circles while laughing manically at her. She regularly puppy bows to Zelda the Cat, a move that initiates play in dog circles, but is meaningless in cat circles, and gets confused when Zelda ignores her. But she can puppy bow! We are so far removed from the days when she could barely get out of bed without being in pain.

She still won't jump into the back of the car, but I think it's because she likes the fuss we give her.

What do you love most about your pet(s)?

  1. Oh ENGIE, this post is everything. I feel like I know your amazing pets. My eyes welled up when you wrote about how far Hannah has come in terms of pain -- what a fantastic development after such a difficult time. The zoomies and puppy bowing are delightful. And I LOVE the Zelda glamour shot. She is beautiful. I want to scritch her under the chin and tell her how magnificent she is.

    1. LOL. Any chance I get to wax about how much I adore our girls is a chance I'll take. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it, too!

  2. Awww this is so sweet! I agree, every day is love your pet day! I love everything about Rex, even when he's like having a giant toddler in the house! Maybe even especially then.

    1. The main reason to have pets is to laugh at them when they're silly. I love it when they are ridiculous and playful.

  3. I don't have pets, but yours are gorgeous. I guess the thing I love most about my pets is that I don't have them because I honestly can't imagine being a human mom AND A pet mom? It makes me beyond happy to have seen the progression of Hannah's health. What a testament to your patient love and care. She is simply wonderful and I want Zelda to come cuddle in my lap right this very instant (were I not allergic to cats, that is).
So if you'll indulge me, I'll tell you what I love most about my kids.
I love when they get a sparkle in their eye and are so genuinely happy with an activity that their face glows.
I love their laugh; especially when it comes from their belly and they can't stop it. Giggling, guffawing, snorting. I love it all when it's sincere.
Snuggling them at bedtime. It's when the best conversations happen.
Watching them sleep. Someone told me this was creepy once your kids were no longer infants. What now? My kids still LOOK like babies when they sleep and I just love seeing them peaceful and content and QUIET. Sleeping kids are like the best kids. Is that creepy? Really?! *Sob*
I love watching them do something I can't do. My kids are more creative and athletic than I am. It's great to see them do things I can't do. Cartwheels? They can do them. I have never done a cartwheel in my life. Go kids.

    1. You can't imagine pets and I can't imagine children! That's what makes the world go around.

I don't know if it's creepy that you watch your kids sleep, but isn't it weird that they don't wake up? I will wake up out of a dead sleep if anyone so much as glances in my direction. Hmmm...I'll have to ask my mom if I was always like this.

  5. WHAT. There's a whole national day for loving your pets??? Well, I don't know what I would do differently- I already spoil my pets terribly. I LOVE all the attention Zelda got in this post! And Hannah... she's truly special. She's come so far, and it's because of all the work you put in with her (not to mention the cost of all her meds when she was sick.)
I can't even imagine my house without pets- it would be so sad and lonely!

    1. My husband and I spent all morning saying "I love you" to the girls in a dramatic fashion. Because how else would they know? (Not the shelter, food, attention, etc. - that's for sure!)

    1. The cat is the loudest creature in our house BY FAR. She's not quiet in her movements or her demands. That's why they're the best.

  7. Yes, every day is love your pet day, so I guess today is "Love your pet a little extra" day.

I've always been fascinated by the combo of black and white whiskers on cats, the M on their foreheads and their eye "make up". Stepdog had a mix of black and white whiskers as well. So far all of Doggo's whiskers are black, and they were very short, but like the rest of her, they seem to be growing. Stepdog had very distinct "eye liner" and a beauty mark when she was younger, but over time all of the hair on her face faded from black to white.

Doggo's body is still small but she has large pointy ears and her tail is long in proportion to her body, so there are times when she looks like a large cat. She also cuddles like a cat - she's got everything except the purr. It will be interesting to see if she continues to cuddle with us when she gets older. I hope so.

    1. Hannah's whiskers are all black and very organized. I am curious to see if they go grey as she gets older. I love the subtle, gradual changes to dogs' faces as they age. Zelda's coloring has not changed a whit since she was about two years old, but Hannah's already getting some grey in her muzzle.

Oh, you'll regret it if Doggo is too cuddle and she's 80 pounds! LOL. Or maybe that would be the Best Thing Ever!

  9. I love your pets, Engie. Especially Zelda's eyes.
I love how my dogs follow me from room to room all day. AND I love how excited they get when I finish my chores and come to cuddle with them. It's the best part of my day, honestly. ❤️

    1. Oh, I love to hear that the best time of your day is when you cuddle your dogs. Second to getting into bed at night, walking H after work is my favorite time of day.

  10. Your pets are so cute! Isn't it fun how they have such distinct personalities? And I'm so happy to hear that your dog is feeling better and enjoying life! What a lucky partnership! I agree that every day is love your pets day. They add so much to our lives! I'm entertained every day by our dog and three cats.

  11. Hannah has my heart, but your Zelda is so beautiful! (And I'm not even a cat person!)

I am so grateful for my Huck and Max. I think of them as my forever toddlers. They're really good at cuddling and being silly. And then I'm in awe of how they figure out things like the birthday song or Christmas or what it means when the sad boxes (suitcases) come out. Scout was amazing at knowing when I was sad or sick. (Huck is too self-involved and Max is too much of a baby for that though.)

    1. I think it's funny how different dogs have different intelligences. Hannah does not seem to understand that suitcases are sad boxes, but she certainly understands when I don't feel well! Hannah can learn tricks relatively quickly, but she hasn't yet learned that if she sticks her nose in Zelda's belly, Zelda's going to thwap her. Smart, but also not!

  12. I love our cat for several reasons: (1) my daughter is in love with her, she accompanies my daughter to play piano, to read, to sleep, everywhere, loyal friend; (2) she's a people cat, she likes to be around people; (3) she reminds me to be chill and relax.

  14. They're both so cute!

Of course every day around here is Maggie Day. I wish she liked being picked up and cuddled, but my heart melts when she settles down on my lap with that little sigh that says she knows she's safe.

    1. Yeah, I don't personally know ANY cats that actually like to be picked up. Just ones that tolerate it better than others.

  15. What a lovely tribute! Zelda and Hannah sound like the sweetest pet siblings.
The only pets we have are fish. I think my favorite thing about them is that it makes my Husband happy to putter over them.

  16. YESSS, a whole post dedicated to Zelda and Hannah! Seeing their pictures just makes me happy ALWAYS.

What I love about my pets:

Eloise: I love the way she meows at me. I like to think we have full on convos because she'll meow at me, I'll respond, and she'll meow back. And she's just a very snuggly girl who loves to be around me at all times.

Lila: I love being her person! She doesn't give love freely and I feel so grateful that she chose me. And she is so fun to pet and snuggle (when she lets me).

    1. I love a vocal cat. I bet Eloise and Zelda would be best friends who never shut up together!

I love that Lila is particular about who she gives affection to and she has chosen you. It definitely says good things about you!

  17. So much love comes through here. I am happy you have such furry and lovely companions in your life. I only ever had a guinea pig when I was in school. It lived very long (for a guinea pig) and I was sad when he passed. Ever since I didn't want to have another pet. But I dream of having a tortoise. They are absolutely amazing. However I conciousely decided I wont get one. We are just not living in a good habitat for them I don't think it is really a nice thing to have them in the fridge during hibernation. It doesn't feel right.

  18. It fills my heart knowing that Hannah isn't in pain any longer. Be still my heart! Her face!
Zelda is the most gorgeous cat and I love that close up of her eyes and whiskers. I had a giggle when you said she will only play for a few seconds before she's almost embarrassed about it. What a sweet trip your two fur babies are!

    1. It has been pretty warm here and lately Hannah's true sassiness has really shown through on walks. She gets the zoomies and it's something I never would have imagined ever happening three years ago. What a change.

  20. Oh, my heart. <3 Your girls, as you know, are gorgeous, but the best best best part about this post is how your love comes through. You are their person (well, one of their two people, I suppose). I am so glad they found you and you found them, and that you are giving them the lives they deserve. Now, if I can just finagle an introduction one of these days... ;)
