February 2024 Library Loans and Holds

It's been a bit since I let everyone know what books I have from the library. Let's dive in. I have too many books and have not been able to read fast enough before they are due, so I don't know how many of these I'll actually get around to reading before I have to return them.

Physical books checked out:
Cover Story by Susan Rigetti - Recommendation from Stephany
The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles (Mosa & Pleiti #2) by Malka Older - Sequel to this one
Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel - Recommendation from Anne
The Memory of Animals by Claire Fuller - Podcast rec
theMystery.doc by Matthew McIntosh - Podcast rec
Out of My Heart by Sharon M. Draper - Co-worker has a special needs daughter and was reading this to her and recommended it to me
The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon - Reading this in tandem with the one below for a great fiction/non-fiction pairing
A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
The Less People Know About Us: A Mystery of Betrayal, Family Secrets, and Stolen Identity by Axton Betz-Hamilton - Betz-Hamilton was on the podcast Criminal on two episodes, "Money Tree" and "The Less People Know About Us," and I was super enthusiastic about reading this book at first, but I've renewed it twice and I am less enthusiastic with each passing day. Maybe I'll just relisten to those episodes.
A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes - Book club book
Dover One (A Dover Mystery Book 1) by Joyce Porter - Birchie and Jenny rec

Audiobooks checked out:
The Feather Thief: Beauty, Obsession, and the Natural History Heist of the Century by Kirk Wallace Johnson - I heard an episode about this on This American Life - the book was slow to start, but at about a third of the way through it picked up and I can't stop listening
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante - Listening along for Cool Bloggers Book Club

Ebooks checked out:
None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell - I am riveted by this

What's in your library stack?

  1. Right now from the library I'm reading The Rachel Incident (loving it) and I have Carly Simon's memoir on my end table. It looks like I have a book in transit too, I think it's Roman Stories.

    1. Ohhh...Carly Simon's memoir. That should be interesting!!

  2. Ok, I'll have to come back to wade through your stacks of books... I was too distracted by Zelda's pretty eyes and bushy tail.

    1. Zelda obviously wanted me to make this post about her.

  3. It looks like Ms Z wants you to pick up a book and start reading so that she can snuggle up in your lap!

I'm so excited that you've got Dover. It's one of my lifelong favorite series - I loved it when I was 12 and I love it on my one billionth rereading at 48.

    1. I have been home all day on the couch and Zelda has ignored me! She is a fickle kitty, I guess, and only wants attention when I can't possibly give it to her.

  4. I'm wondering how you'll like Dover One- I'm loving them, but I think it's because I grew up reading Agatha Christies and I love the British Whodunit-style mystery.
i read something else by Lisa Jewell and enjoyed it (offhand I can't remember which one) so maybe i'll check out this one- it sounds good!

    1. Based on the afterword in this Lisa Jewell book, I guess it's different from a lot of her other books, but I really liked it. I mean, it's not going to win a Pulitzer or anything, but it was great for reading before I went to sleep.

  5. I'm a One Book At A Time girl, so until I finish MBF, I'm reading a bunch of New Yorker magazines that my son gave me. I have The Berry Pickers and Tom Lake (STILL) among my TBR pile.

Zelda is lovely. And I'm intrigued by that piece of furniture.

    1. That piece of furniture is a cedar trunk where we put some of our cycling supplies. It is beloved by Zelda the Cat for looking out the window into our backyard and for the humans because it's where we sit to put on our shoes before we go outside!

  6. I'm just the boring one off in the corner reading all sorts of non-fiction. Hey, the heart likes what it likes.
I finished MBF this week. I couldn't keep reading in smaller chunks. I'll admit I wasn't a fan BUT I wanted to see how the story arc played out so you better believe I read synopses of the other three books!

    1. Ha ha! I knew we'd suck you in the MBF world! I do hope you continue participating in the discussion even though you've read ahead!

  7. Cat and books!
I just put The Frozen River on my holds too. I can't remember why, though... I read The Change last year - I thought it was very validating and fun.
Currently - My Brilliant Friend (yay!), Funerals are Fatal (Agatha Christie), No One Leave the Castle (reading aloud with my kids), The Marquis who Musn't (Courtney Milan). And the Bronte biography, which has taken over a year and I'm about 200 pages from finishing.

    1. The Marquis Who Mustn't had to be a historical romance novel, didn't it? That title made me laugh.

  8. Kitty! Hello, Zelda.

I don't have as many books out as you, but I have a nice little stack right now, so I think I'll blog about them today--thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Oh, I love to see other people's library stacks! Maybe Maggie can photobomb your photoshoot, too.

  9. I just finished The Only One Left by Riley Sager and None of This is True and I enjoyed both of them. I think that when I don't feel like investing too much, i.e. I am busy or distracted, a thriller is the perfect genre for me. I have had other things on my mind lately so those really hit the spot.

    1. Oh, I'm glad you liked The Only One Left. I have no idea why it's on my list, so it's nice to have some confirmation that it's worth my time.

  10. I am going to pick up Yours Truly today also based on Stephany's rec! Some other holds came in, too: Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi, Hot Six by Janet Evanovich, and Critical Hits: Writers Playing Video Games...

    1. I think Yours Truly is going to be at the library for me to pick up tomorrow morning. Yay!

  11. Spectacular outtakes.

I just check out A Court of Thorns and Roses (I think that's it?) on audiobook because some friends and I are going to read it together... And I am halfway through The Mothers by Brit Bennett (so far pretty meh for me). I am really excited to read that Lisa Jewell but I have a bunch of other books to get through first!

    1. I knew that the Zelda outtakes were more interesting than the actual books!

  12. That's an impressive stack of books and such an adorable kitty! I'm mostly into ebooks and audiobooks these days, and I'm so grateful that my library has Libby so I can borrow them. I just finished reading Excuse Me While I Disappear: Tales of Midlife Mayhem
by Laurie Notaro. Parts of it had me laughing out loud, and other parts were depressing.

    1. My audiobook listening has gone up a lot recently, so I'd be interested in your favorite audiobooks!

  13. I read Longitude years and years and years ago in another life, and I remember I liked it, but not much else.
I want to continue that awkwardly yet charmingly titled series about Mossa and Pleiti!
I started The Memory of Animals but didn't finish it because it was a library ebook that disappeared.
I LOVED Vicious and have been meaning to reread it. I will be interested to hear what you think because for some reason I'm unsure that you will like it, but I'm not sure why.
Zelda is so fluffy! Is this winter growth? Or am I misremembering other photos?
Have you read all the J.D. Robb books? Do you like them? (duh). I always assumed a series that long had a high likelihood of low quality, but it looked interesting.

    1. Zelda is usually that fluffy. She's all fur all the time. Her tail is magnificent.

I have read all the JD Robb books. They vary wildly in quality, but I love the look a successful long-term marriage, successful adult friendships, and sort of deal with the quality issues. LOL.

  14. Two books based on my recs! I'm nervous!! Haha.

Right now, I have The Art of Scandal by Regina Black, Morbidly Yours by Ivy Fairbanks, and How to Be Yourself by Ellen Hendrickson checked out in print. On Libby, I have the audiobook of A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson checked out and two audiobook holds for The Final Revival of Opal & Nev and The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

    1. Oh, I loved Opal & Nev. Good call about listening to it - I bet it's a terrific audiobook!

  15. Nice stack! I haven't gone to the library and just browsed and brought home a big stack in a long time. I do love that. But I really don't read fast enough/ enough books to make it make sense normally. The boys used to bring home HUGE stacks, but sadly, as they've gotten older, they read much less than they used to. Kinda kills me..... I'm reading The Kite Runner (one I own- someone gave it to me and I know it's wildly popular but I'd never read it) and a non-fiction called The Art of Gathering for a virtual book club I'm in.

    1. I listened to a Kite Runner as an audiobook on a very long road trip more than a decade ago. There are still scenes that haunt me. I'm interested in what you think about it!

  16. I just finished a book I received as a birthday gift, 'Mika in Real Life', which I enjoyed. I'm reading MBF, and listening to it as well, and it is REALLY hard to not read ahead. I'm trying to stick with the schedule though. Since I have seen the TV series, I sort of know how a lot of it turns out, but my memory is pretty bad, so I'm trying to just reign it all in. Already a bit skeezed out about the part that I know is coming for NEXT Monday's discussion, though.

I don't currently have any physical library books, but am listening to Land of Milk and Honey by C Pam Zhang, which is engrossing.

It seems like I get most of my ideas from reading blog posts, but I just put the book on hold, I don't keep track of where I heard of it, so I'm impressed that you know who suggested what.

I really liked The Change. I hope you enjoy it!

    Audiobooks on hold via Libby:
You Could Make This Life Beautiful - Maggie Smith
The Vaster Wilde - Lauren Groff
    Yours Truly - Abby Jimenez
    Adelaide - Genevieve Wheeler
    Family Family - Laurie Frankel
    Wellness - Nathan Hill
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store - James McBride
    North Woods - Daniel Mason

    1. Line of note in Land of Milk and Honey, main character regarding her boss:
"I waited to see if I would tell him to fuck off."
      So relatable.

  17. Right now, the library book I am reading is Longthroat Memoirs: Soups, Sex and Nigerian Taste Buds (by Yemisi Aribisala) and it is fascinating. (I am reading plenty of other non-library books...)

    1. Wow! The juxtaposition of soups and sex in the subtitle is intriguing!

  18. Frozen River is my next book club pick and I am waiting for it to become available. I hope you enjoy "The Change" I really did.
Went to the new library for the first time this past week and gotten 3 books on sketching and artists to give me inspiration and guidance for my 100 day projects. So far only leaved through them.

    1. Oh, I really enjoyed Frozen River, especially in conjunction with the Diary non-fiction book. I hope you and your book club have a great discussion about it.

  19. Just fyi, I had to listen to Longitude to get through it. It is a good story, but I was doing the same thing I did with MBF, and focusing on the words, not the story. So if you struggle, you might want to try that. :)
I HAVE BOOKS ON HOLD! Audiobooks, mostly. I am so proud of myself for testing the library waters. It's all because of you, Stephany, Birchie, Kyria, Lisa... all the library loving cool bloggers! Now if they would just improve the collections... sigh. (Currently have audiobooks "Awaken your genius" by Ozan Varol, and "Becoming Wise" by Krista Tippett. I drive to MSP Wednesday and home Friday, so I know what I will be listening to in the car. :)

    1. Oh, I haven't started Longitude yet. It's tiny. I'll see if I need to resort to audiobook.

Yay for books on hold. Can you add your University library to your Libby account? I have my public library AND University library cards connected to Libby and while my University account doesn't have a ton, it sometimes has more than my public library for things like non-fiction.
