I know it seems crazy, but the February edition of Cool Bloggers Book Club (CBBC) starts NEXT WEEK. Remember your assignment to read
My Brilliant Friend is the Prologue AND Childhood (pages 1-85 of the paperback Europa edition, up to location 1029 on a Kindle). When we did CBBC last summer, I had read the pages and written the posts a week in advance and, as of when I'm writing this, I have not even started reading the book yet because life has gotten hectic. If I can read it AND write up a post, you can read it, I promise!!
****************
Do you remember when I was doing that project where I wrote something on this blog every day for a year? The very first post was me posing with a bison sculpture? It made me chuckle when I saw this bison sculpture in a random rest area in Indiana.
******************
What's the last bison sculpture you saw? Have you ever seen a real one?
I don't remember any bison sculptures in my life, but we did see some bison up in Yellowstone one summer. Just yesterday I learned that the destruction of bison herds was a colonizing move to deprive indigenous people of sustenance.
ReplyDeleteAnd to make up for that seriousness so early in the morning, here's something just for you:
What did the buffalo say to his son when he dropped him off at school?
Bison. 😛
Yes, the history of why bison were endangered for so long is so sad. I mean, basically anything tied up with the indigenous population of this continent is sad, really. :(
DeleteI just messaged my husband that joke. I love it so much.
maya! That's a great "dad joke."
DeleteI just texted this joke to my sick daughter away at university and she asked me if I was okay.
DeleteMy husband responded "HA." He's apparently more willing to humor me than your daughter is willing to humor you!
DeleteBison! Maya, I am taking that joke to the kiddos!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it is already time for CBBC! I need to get my keister in gear. I will be ready though, never fear. Thank you for the prod/reminder!
We have Bison in Golden Gate Park. Maybe that is not what you meant, but they are there and I love going over there to look at them. Other than that, I have seen them in the wild...I think in Wyoming. They are pretty ugly, shaggy creatures, but are fascinating.
I don't think they're ugly! I think they're glorious and designed to endure such harsh weather it's amazing.
DeleteI have never seen a bison in real life or sculpture life. Apparently, I haven't lived life yet. New goal: see a bison statue :)
ReplyDeleteYikes. I need to start reading!! I have the book and will dive in this week.
I need to start reading, too. I don't know when I'll have the time, but maybe it will just mean some late nights!
DeleteI have seen bison! There is a bison, um, what do you call it, reserve? I'm not sure. Anyway, there are bison near Waterton National Park and they are truly cool animals. They are also at the Calgary Zoo in the Canadian Wilds part, and they are gigantic. And very stinky.
ReplyDeleteI am just back from Mexico so I need to get started on the book!
Oh, I guess I didn't know they were stinky. It makes sense. Who even knows what gets in their pelts?!
DeleteI have never seen a bison sculpture, nor a bison. But, that makes sense here in the northeast US. The university next to where I live used to have these bear sculptures across campus decorated by different artists; my daughter and I used to do a walk from bear to bear (a "bear hunt") during our quiet COVID years... I am #2 on the hold list for My Brilliant Friend - I have hopes of it arriving this week, but I may be starting a week late if it doesn't.
ReplyDeleteOh, wow! There's a hold list for it?! I just assumed that because it was more than ten years old, you wouldn't have to wait. Well, fingers crossed it comes in time for you!
DeleteI'm pretty sure I've never seen a bison sculpture or a real bison. And, I'm excited for the book club! I'll start the book tonight. My husband loved it so much, he got the second one!
ReplyDeleteWow. I guess I'm realizing how lucky I am to have seen so many bison!
DeleteBy the way I like the new book club graphic!
ReplyDeleteElisabeth designed it and sent it to me and I love it so much!!
DeleteBook club header looks awesome. I will not be reading the book again because I am deep into what I'm currently reading and the thought of rereading it in February scares me a little - my mental health tends to be fragile right now. I will follow along though, I remember it very well.
ReplyDeleteElisabeth deserves all the credit for the CBBC logo!
DeleteYou know what? I think my mental health is fragile, too, and that's why I have been putting it off. But no more procrastination! I shall read some pages tonight no matter what.
The last bison sculpture I saw was on our way to and from Ontario, CN. We drive through Buffalo, NY, and there are buffalo sculptures along the highway. There used to be more--even a baby or two--but maybe they've met with burglars or something.
ReplyDeleteI've seen them IRL a couple of times, and I'm always amazed at their size and appearance.
My pages are read and I'm ready to go.
Oh, of course Buffalo, New York would play up the bison connection! That makes so much sense. New bucket list item: see bison statues in Buffalo.
DeleteI have seen real bison. I have seen real bison sculptures as well, though the last time I saw one is eluding me.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the CBBC! I need to order my book or I will be behind before we even begin.
Yes! Order your book RIGHT NOW!!
DeleteThe book is on its way! Thank you for leading us again. :-) I'm excited.
DeleteWoot! MBF is still available on Libby so I am set for right now. I figure that the worst that can happen is that I'll have to check out a hard copy if I can't renew the Libby - or just buy it.
ReplyDeleteThe last time that I saw a Buffalo statue was...wait for it...in Buffalo NY last spring!
I honestly have never thought about Buffalo, NY and its ties to bison until this post. I shall have to get there someday!
DeleteI've never seen a bison sculpture nor have I seen a bison in person. I do like to use ground bison in chili. So there's that.
ReplyDeleteOh, interesting. I've heard bison is good meat, but I've never tried it.
DeleteI started reading it at lunch today and ... it's not grabbing me, so I may be a watcher and not a participant in this round again. It's not you, it's me!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe I have ever seen a bison or a bison statue. Down here I've seen cow statues and alligator statues!
Yeah, I'm rereading it and I think the first part is so confusing with all the names and the main characters are children and it's sort of slow. But I remember it getting good, so I'm persevering.
DeleteOh my. I do not have a copy of the book yet. I'm reading something else at the moment, but I might be ready to set it aside.
ReplyDeleteI flew to Colorado Springs Friday morning and there was, low and behold, a bison statue as we departed the airport. I've seen bison in Yellowstone before AND I happened to be at the zoo today with my tots and I saw some there as well.
Yes! There were so many bison in Yellowstone when I went decades ago - I bet there are even more today! And it's nice of you to expose the little ones to bison.
DeleteI've seen many a bison statue when I was working in Colorado, I can't remember any here in DC, but there must be some. There are bison at our zoo. Funny story - bison are my Husband's favorite animal, and years ago, they got rid of the bison at the zoo because they were expanding the panda exhibit and it made him so mad. To this day, he calls pandas, "Giant Racoons" with a hint of scorn. Anyhow, the bison did eventually come back to the National Zoo and we go see them every so often.
ReplyDeleteI still have to get my copy of My Brilliant Friend! I was thinking of picking it up at the library's used book store, so I'll put that on my to do list for this week. And then reading!
I'm going to start calling pandas giant racoons. Although that's really a disservice to racoons since racoons are smart and enterprising and pandas are lazy and accidentally kill their young. I'm on your husband's side!
DeleteAhhh, thank you for the reminder! I just ordered the Kindle version of the book and will start it over the weekend. Yay!
ReplyDeleteYay! I can't wait to get started.
DeleteThat is one colorful Bison. We saw them in Wyoming years ago; they're interesting beasts who appear that they don't give AF.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing the AUDIO version of the book and for the life of me, I can't tell where I am Chapter-wise. I might have to finish the entire book before we start the club....but I know I'll forget stuff!
Oh, no! I didn't even think about the audio version. Let me do some research and see if I can borrow the audiobook and maybe add some timestamps. This is great feedback for me!
Deleteyes, there are bison EVERYWHERE in yellowstone. including parking lots.
ReplyDeleteI was there decades ago and they were everywhere. I always imagined that's what it was like all though the Plains pre-European immigration.
