Happy new year! Woot woot! We survived another rotation around the sun. (That's the thing, right? I literally never understood the Earth spinning around its axis versus traveling around the sun and which was day and which was a year and you could show me eight bazillion of those dioramas of the solar system and I will never understand.) I'm sure you'll all be thrilled to know that it was cold, snowy, and windy yesterday, so I spent most of the day curled up on the couch with my cat and a book and only venturing outdoors to walk the dog and frantically try to find a hat for this post.
It was this or a Christmas inflatable and I think we're all over the inflatables, right? |
We were in bed by ten o'clock and my big plans for my Monday off are to take the dog for a bath and figure out how to renew a prescription.
I lived for a brief period of time in a small southeastern city in Michigan when I was between undergrad and grad school. I dated a guy during that time and his family did New Year's Eve UP. Everyone dressed up, they had those silly headbands and beads to wear, party poppers, and they had an old vinyl record player that they used to play old skool jazz standards. They cleared an entire room of their house for a dance floor and we would eat fancy hors d'oeuvres, drink sparkling wine/apple juice, and dance until just before midnight when everything would turn quiet and there would be a reverent silence as we watched the ball drop on their giant late 90s television (on mute, of course, because it was QUIET). Then we would pack up the leftover finger foods, drag the furniture back into the emptied room, and go home before the madness came with closing time.
But I had never before, or ever since, been awake at midnight on NYE. Even in college when I was vaguely worried that the world was going to blow up when the computers had to deal with 2000, I just went to bed.
I do like the extra day off, though.

How are you celebrating the new year?
I was in bed but barely awake at midnight, so I texted family briefly and went to sleep.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year 🎇
Happy New Year! (I honestly would have been so upset if anyone had texted me at midnight. LOL.)
DeleteHappy New Year, Engie!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually awake at midnight, but Big A was working (he usually is--essential workers have the worst holiday hours) so I stayed up writing (doing a semi-formal "write-in") with some writer friends.
I've never been a fan of the inflatables, thank you for this handsome (if slightly startled) gent. I think he fills out his uniform rather nicely. lol
Happy New Year, my friend.
DeleteI hope you're able to get some amazing writing done and the holiday doesn't mess up your sleep schedule too much.
Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI think I've only been to one actual fancy NYE party at an event center. I was all dressed up in a mid-length, dark green velvet dress, high heels, sparkly jewelry. There was a prime rib dinner, champagne at midnight, and then a breakfast buffet a bit later. Big contrast to us last night in our jammies and blankets beached in the living room, watching Netflix and nibbling snacks, then going to bed at 10pm. No champagne, no toast, and us texting the boys preemptively so that they didn't wake us at midnight!
Ha ha! Right? It was nice to have ONE year of a good party, but it is a lot of effort.
DeleteWe have a coach boy statue in our neighborhood as well. There's no school like the old school.
ReplyDeleteLast night we stayed home with the boys. I headed up to bed around 10 but I kept reading just one more chapter in my book so I ended up going downstairs to watch the ball drop with them. Normally we have a big family dinner for NYD but for whatever reason we're not doing it this year so we've got a low key day on tap.
Huh. I honestly don't think I've ever had a New Year tradition. Maybe I should try to start something with my husband!
DeleteHappy new year!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear about your family's shenanigans in 2024!
DeleteI was in bed by 8 pm yesterday - whomp, whomp. I feel so lame doing this, but it has been YEARS since I was up at midnight. It makes me feel better to know that some other people prioritize reading and sleep on NYE. I *want* to be the person at a fancy party but would likely hate it and be exhausted - ha.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year my friend <3
I do NOT feel lame about it at all. If other people want to party, good on them. I have an excellent book to get to!
DeleteGoing to bed early would have been pointless for me because our neighborhood EXPLODES with fireworks at midnight on New Year's Eve. But I spend the time reading on the couch. After the cacophony died down, and we reassured the cats it was safe to come out from under the bed, i got in bed. It was a nice NYE! Today we're just being mellow, but there's some talk of a dinner tonight, and my son says he's making vegan cannolis. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteOh, man, I would be IRATE if there were fireworks here. There were a couple of pops, but nothing major. Hannah would never forgive me for abandoning her if there were fireworks. I guess it's a good thing it's so cold here!
DeleteI was briefly napping before midnight as a migraine craweld up but got up a few minutes before to watch the fireworks and kiss the husband. Then I was awake and read my book. I am no fan of NYE as it tends to be just loud, chaotic and scary. However last night I wondered if a party and some dressing up would be nice for a change.
ReplyDeleteHappy new year to you. May it be filled with wonderful moments, great books and lovely people.
Yeah, maybe a party and dressing up for NYE once a decade or so would be fun! :)
DeleteThat sounds like a really fun party! We celebrated Calgary New Year's with our friends - in that we cheered at 11 pm, which is midnight Calgary time. I often stay up until midnight on NYE though, which is a feat since I usually am in bed before 9. We celebrated early because our friends left yesterday morning and had a long day ahead of them.
ReplyDeleteWow! I am not sure I could stay up until midnight these days. I'm impressed you can power through!
DeleteOh, published too soon. Does the 15.1 mean that you are doing that blog challenge again?
ReplyDeleteOh, no! I'm just going to see how long I can keep the hat thing up on the first of the month.
DeleteThe tradition of your younger self's ex's family is fascinating. How fun? Maybe? Or weird? I can't determine. I actually was up till 12:17, but only because our freaking area was A LIGHT with loud fireworks and the dogs were not having it.
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of the few benefits of living in a cold place! We had a couple of booms and pops, but the fireworks were very limited. Poor little puppies getting scared of all the noise.
DeleteI stayed up for the New Year for years and years, but I'm happy to sleep. Waiting for kids to get home or driving them or picking them up from parties interferes with me NYE preference, but this year we were in bed a little after 11 - only because we had to pick up Rae from a neighbor's house. Your ex's NYE celebration sounds interesting. Good luck getting a perscription filled. I think everything is closed. I'm in a similar boat.
ReplyDeleteI never even left the house. Big plans for that prescription and dog bath that never happened. Oh, well. It'll wait until tomorrow, which is today. *sigh*
DeleteOh, those parties sound like fun ... just to go to once for sometihng different. We did not stay up until midnight this year. But the illegal fireworks started at 11:45pm and continued sparodically until 2 am which was very annoying and upset all the dogs in the neighbourhood including ours.
ReplyDeleteYes, the fireworks thing is a real problem. *sigh* This inspired me to buy some Adaptil for Hannah because she has found the noise to be very stressful these days. Poor thing.
DeleteI am not into New Year's celebration. The last actual NY's party I went to was probably 20 years ago in Germany with my old circle of friends. I do stay up for NY's though... and I usually got outside at midnight and stand in the middle of the street and look at the stars :) (also, my uncle and my mom call me for our NY's, so I have to stay up).
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed you were awake. You're doing a lot better than most of the rest of us!
DeleteI think I was in bed before Elisabeth... I am not a NYE person BUT one thing my family did was have "snack dinner", which was awesome. For the meat eaters, pigs in a blanket (ew) and for everyone, other appetizer-y type things. Cheese and crackers, spanakopita, etc. I loved - and still love - it. But I have never been to a party, nor have I stayed up til midnight anytime in the last 20 years. :) We can be non-celebrators together! There are a ton of us!
ReplyDeleteI used to regularly stay up until midnight. And then I got a dog. LOL. Hannah really did change our schedules around in a bit of a crazy way.
DeleteWhat a lovely tradition to do snack dinner on NYE! I feel like we need a tradition of some sort for the holiday, but we just treat it like another day. Hm. I'll have to think on that for next year.
I'll advocate for adopting snack dinner. Popcorn! Snacky things! And you can do it for lunch, or dinner, or both. (This year, I made my own layered taco dip that had the things I like but not the things I don't. :>)
