4.1 Hat - Cold Snap

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the first day of the month is "Hat."

******************

(Not a complaint, but a bit of a conundrum. Twelve months on the theme of "hat" is going to be tough.)

Yesterday was glorious. Sure, sure, it never got above zero all day, but the skies were blue, the sun was brilliant, and Hannah deigned to go on a walk with me all the way to the park and back. Look at the snow and frost on her muzzle! Look at how OVER photographs she was. Look at my ridiculous winter hat. Also, note that I am wearing my Craft hat under the knitted hat because it is cold, yo.

What a majestic beast. She doesn't like it when I pull her coat up over her ears and tell her she's wearing a hat. She's shakes her head and lets her ears out even though you know she's losing like 50% of her body heat through those things.

I see photos of other dogs and they let their owners put hats on them. What's going on with girls that they're so protective of their ears?!

********************

Do you layer hats in the winter? Do your pets let you put hats on them? Do you like playing in the snow?

  1. My granddog Zydrunas is quite amenable to wearing clothing, but not boots. He has a dinosaur snood that is hilarious and many sweaters, football (Cleveland Browns) jerseys, and shirts. I got him a nice winter coat that he loves. He is a bully breed mix, so he hasn't fluff to keep him warm in the winter.

I loathe all hats because of how they mess with my hair and cause static. I wear warm fleece headbands over my ears and forehead. It's upsetting because I am a knitter and I could knit any number of cute hats for myself.

    1. Hannah will allow the coat, but really fights booties. That gets to be a bigger issue when there's a lot more salt out than we currently have, so I'm letting her out shoeless for now. I always feel so badly for the bully breeds because they are practically naked out there in the cold!! Poor babies.

Headbands don't cut it for me - too much of my head is exposed when I'm walking the dog for miles each day. I will suffer bad hair for warmth! Hey, if you want to knit hats, I'm a willing buyer!

  2. I think that hat is very cute! I think the colour is great on you. Also, that day looks gorgeous. We have many days like that, that are COLD but quite beautiful with sun, blue skies, snow. Hannah looks cute in her little coat. There is a dog at the offleash who has a little parka with a fur-lined hood and my god. It is just SO cute.

    1. Fur-lined hood!!!! Adorable!!! That would definitely be "hat" postworthy.

  3. I enjoy selfies and am happy to see the person behind the blog.
I have a collection of winter hats. They come to my rescue on bad hair days. I wish there was a summer option because I don't look good in ball caps.
I also love your doggie's bright orange coat.

    1. The coat is orange because that's what color came in her size. Ha! I wish I could say I'm trying to make some huge statement, but I'm not. I do think she looks nice in it, though.

  4. I have never seen a dog in a hat, but I really want to, now! Maybe you could start thinking of idioms and phrases that have "hat" in them, for future months? Hat trick, old hat, I can't think of any others so maybe this is a bad idea. Hannah really is majestic! And very visible in her orange jacket!

    1. I might start using these prompts slightly more obliquely, but I desperately want to have a photo of a hat every month. Ha! It's my own internal challenge.

  6. When we were dog sitting last week, there was an adorable rain jacket for Max (the dog), with a little hood and he looked so cute with the hood up with only his little nose visible. Of course the hood never stayed up. The physics of a dog in a hat baffles me - how does that even work? Don't the ears get in the way?
I've never thought to layer hats, but it makes so much sense. Usually I just pull my hood up over, but that gets in the way of visibility. Your idea is so much better.

    1. Oh, I wouldn't be able to deal without layering hats. I have never met a knitted hat that is strong enough to deal with the wind, so having a windproof beanie underneath a knit hat has been my winter default for a decade a half. It's really made a difference. If it's REALLY cold, I'll also put up my hood. I am shameless about staying warm.

  7. I think having to write on the theme of "hat" for twelve months will challenge your creativity in interesting ways! I can't wait to see what you come up with as the months go on.
Since I only have cats and guinea pigs, I'll never get a hat on any of my pets. Luckily we don't need it down here! Hannah looks very handsome in her orange coat.

    1. I've definitely put a hat on my cat! She didn't like it, but it can be done! Don't give up! I bet your cats would LOVE it.

  8. I look forward to seeing what you come up with for the hat prompt over the next 12 months!. Even humans only occasionally need a hat here in winter, so I don't face the problem of having to put anything on Riley. I don't know how you do the cold weather.

    1. Well, with the right gear, cold weather is fine. It's just that the dog doesn't necessarily like the "right gear"!

  9. I've never seen a dog wearing a hat - at least not willingly. Our dog is anti coat and anti boots so we have to keep her walks short when it's very cold out. Luckily we didn't get super cold so walkies have been good.

    1. Yes, even with Hannah's coat and boots, sometimes she just goes into the backyard and refuses to go further. Seems like good sense to me!

  10. I think both your hat and her coat look just fine.

    1. I'll pass this on to her. Maybe it will make her more willing to wear it.

  11. It's been sunny here, too, but BITTERLY cold. I don't love gray weather but I will take gray and mild over sunny and extremely cold! I haven't layered hats, but I do wear a different hat when I run than when I walk and I will layer a balaclava over my running hat when it's especially cold. I skipped another walk yesterday since my walk on Tuesday was really unpleasant... I'd have to bring snowpants to work to make the walks more tolerable and I don't feel like doing that as I"m hauling enough as it! But I'm going to try again today before we have another cold snap tomorrow. The forecast for the week ahead looks marvelous, though! Temps in the 30s. Wheee!!

    1. You and I are opposites in this then. I will take sunny and bitter cold over grey and mild any time. As soon as the sun is gone, I am basically unable to function. I just want to nap and pout! I can dress for the cold if the sun's out, but I can't do anything to motivate myself if it's overcast.

  12. I felt funny taking Mulder for a walk yesterday, as it was 32 degrees and he lost his undercoat from chemo. He seemed fine though. Seeing your dog with her feet in the snow, and happy, makes me feel better. To be clear, Mulder seemed fine yesterday. He didn't ACT cold. It was just me. Today it was a balmy 34 when we went out, so I felt better about it. (What? I know.) Mulder HATES clothes of any kind. He just stands there looking pathetic, and will sometimes whine a bit. I doubt we could put a jacket like that on him, though perhaps...he will wear his harness/seatbelt very happily because it means we are going for a ride in the car.

Somehow I thought these prompts that you and Bestest Friend are using were a new one every day, I didn't clue in that it is a certain word for the first of every month, etc. I have some thoughts on the Hat them. 1. What about the sorting hats in Harry Potter? Could you do something with that? How about sayings that include hats? Like, 'keep that under your hat', or 'pass the hat', 'hats off to you', 'pull something out of the hat', 'old hat', 'at the drop of a hat'?
