3.5 Drawing - About Town

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we will write a blog post on a predetermined theme randomly chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the fifth day of the month is "Drawing." I am such a bad artist that this month I took a photo about town and put it through an app that creates pencil drawings.

In our downtown area, there's a facade where a movie theater used to be. It now holds a couple of public restrooms and marks where our Farmers' Market is held. I took the photo because I don't think I've ever walked by it during business hours without there being lots of cards parked on the street. I'm standing across the street from it in front of the post office and there are usually so many cars parked!

Original photo

I used an app called "Sketch Photo" which was free on my Android phone, although it had a lot of ads. Here's what it created after I cropped the photo and uploaded it.

Which do you prefer? Maybe this will be the start of a series in which I download a bunch of these sketching apps and see which one rises to the top!

What's a local landmark in your town?

  1. It is fun to mess around with filters.

    1. I don't usually mess with filters because I don't know what I'm doing, but I will definitely check out more of these apps to see if there's one I like best.

  2. I think I like the photo better, and what a cool building it is! I'm glad it hasn't been torn down, it gives such character to the space.

    1. Apparently this is just the front of the original building and the rest of the building was torn down to make room for the parking lot just behind it. I do like that they kept it, though, since it adds public restrooms and a bit of history to the area.

  3. Wow, this is cool- I had no idea such an app exists. I'm a TERRIBLE artist- worse than you, I think. i remember you showed a drawing you did on a Christmas card envelope and I thought "That really isn't so bad!"
There are some historic places in Florida, but I really can't say we have any landmarks in our area. But your photo reminds me of some buildings in the town where I grew up

    1. I mean, calling this a "landmark" is a bit generous, but there are some fun historical places in town. I feel like I'm maybe exaggerating the importance of this building!

  4. This building is so cool! Not sure about local landmarks, but I will say that there is a building near where Carla went to camp that looked exactly like Ron Swanson. Every day while I was in the pickup line I would stare at the building and wonder, "How is it that this building looks so uncannily similar to a character in a sitcom played by a human?"

  5. I don't have an opinion on the pictures but I came here specifically to thank you for recommending Food News. OMGOMGOMG I LOVE IT. I am having a hard time not downloading the entire back catalogue and listening in one go.

    1. YES!!! I have listened to so many of the episodes in the last week. They are such a fun pair even though they are absolutely WILD in their food takes (Juliet's warm mayo is okay to eat will never kill me! Jacoby's inability to realize that people frequently take food on planes is hysterical). There was an episode that starts with an outtake with Juliet saying random words like "Canada snacks breakfast" or something and it pays off at the end and I laughed so much during that episode. I'm so glad you enjoy Food News and if you run out of these, go get you some episodes of Food News 1.0!

    1. I would sort of like a kid's book with drawings like that of places around our town. LOL.

  7. That's really cool that they kept the facade. There's a big grand 1920's movie theater in my hometown that's been preserved and it's always a treat to go there. Being able to keep part of a building and repurpose it for current use is the next best thing.

Photo>sketch but the sketch is cool as well.

    1. Yes, there was an old-time theater in my college town that used to show movies for really cheap and it was so much fun to go there. I just Googled it and apparently it's been renovated and reopened as a live entertainment venue, so that's cool that it's still around. I agree that keeping at least part of a building and making it usable is important for the historical landscape.

  8. We live in a capitol city so the capitol for sure. Also my campus has some iconic buildings. Love that photo and the app version!

  9. I love these old land marks - we have an old movie theater, Tower Theater, in Sacramento that is well-known.

    1. I just looked up some photos - what a gorgeous place! I'm glad it's still standing AND still being used.

  10. Filters can be fun to use on some photos; this one really made the original more interesting. We have an old cemetery that has about 20 gravestones; it's on a really busy corner (now) next to a CVS and a Car Rental place. I doubt those souls are getting rest.
