3.25 Relationship - A Mirror!

Bestest Friend and I are doing a blog project. Each day we write a blog post on a pre-determined theme chosen by a random noun generator. The theme for the twenty-fifth day of the month is "Relationship."

*****************

When we moved into our house, we bought a bed frame and two nightstands from an Amish furniture maker that is local(ish). We were able to pick out the wood and grain pattern and we settled for a rough cherry.

Yes, we have a full-sized bed. I KNOW. I feel like a bigger bed would mean our marriage was in peril. Can you tell which side of the bed is mine?

Nothing else matches. We also have Dr. BB's grandmother's cedar chest and two dressers in entirely different styles and woods in this room. I think if we had an unlimited budget, we might upgrade to matching dressers, but in the meantime, we have two perfectly serviceable dressers, so why bother.

But what we don't have in our house is a full-length mirror. I have complained about this since the day we moved in. There's a mirror on the door in our downstairs bathroom, but the lighting in there is bad and you can't see your whole outfit, so I have done quite a bit of jumping up and down to see my whole body in a mirror or standing on the ledge of the bathtub. I am, obviously, the coolest. (Shoutout to Suz who knows that people who say they're cool are...probably not cool.)

Dr. BB surprised me by ordering a full-length mirror to match our bedroom set! And it took over a year, but it finally got here! What a good husband. I think it was intended as an anniversary present in May of 2021, but it wasn't finished until December of 2022, so if you have a young person in your life who is good with their hands, maybe you can suggest to them that learning carpentry and making furniture is a good career path.

Our mirror! And two mismatched dressers! And shoes!

The best thing is that I can see my entire body in the mirror. That is also the worst thing, to be honest.

And if you thought I was done with talking about furniture, just wait until you read tomorrow's post!

What piece of furniture is the most recently added to your household?

  1. Full sized bed! Wow. I could not even imagine. We have a king and if it were smaller, our marriage would certainly be in peril. Do the animals also sleep in the bed? Lovely mirror, worth the wait for sure.

    1. Our dog and cat are not allowed upstairs and have never been allowed in our bedrooms, so it's really just me and my husband in bed. No pets, no kids. We've only ever had a full-size bed and when we go to hotels and we get a bigger bed, I hate it because he's so far away!

  2. Funny thing. We don't have a full-length mirror in our house, on purpose. It's just better for my mental health. I agree that it's a bit of a disadvantage never to be able to see what an outfit looks like, ha ha. My kids have complained about this, and actually there's a semi-full length mirror in my daughter's room (which was there when we moved into the house) so she can kind of see herself. Once when the kids were younger we went to a hotel and they were exclaiming over all the luxuries- "Look how big the TV is! Look at the tub! And there's a MIRROR!" They weren't being sarcastic. I felt a little guilty about that. Maybe I should get my daughter an actual full length mirror?
And... my husband and I sleep in a kind size bed. I don't think our marriage could survive a full!

    1. The mirror is in our bedroom and I actually get dressed in our downstairs bathroom, so I rarely do check it. It's really only when I want to make sure that my entire outfit is okay that I run upstairs to check, so it hasn't really impacted my mental health, I don't think. If it started to become a problem, I guess I could cover it and remove the cover when I need to check it!

  3. Also a mirror! But our's was from IKEA and not nearly as GORGEOUS as yours. I am a huge fan of mirrors because I feel like they make every space look bigger. We have a shocking number of mirrors in our house (and I want to add one more)...even though I spend almost no time looking in them. I treat mirrors like art!

We started with a full, went to a queen, and have ended up with a king. I find it very hard to sleep in a queen now, and a full is horrific. It's so funny how we get used to the extra space. When we were shopping for a king, a customer in the furniture store overhead us and asked if it was going to be our first king bed. When I said yes she replied: It's going to change your life. And it has!

My parents only have full beds are their house, though, so we just go into those visits knowing we're not going to sleep very well.

    1. Whenever we go to a hotel and there's a queen or king bed, I just hate it. I get really cold when I sleep and rely heavily on my husband's body heat to keep me warm. In those huge beds, he's just so far away and I end up being cold and grumpy. LOL. Now we have this fancy frame, so I can't imagine every upgrading, to be honest. It's also JUST us in the bed, though. No animals or kids, so I imagine that makes a difference.

    1. It is pretty fancy. Maybe a bit too fancy for our humdrum four-square, but I love it anyway.

  5. What a lovely mirror. Well worth the wait.
I have a very small house, and there is nowhere to put a mirror like yours. I lived without a full-length mirror until several years ago when I got a cheapo one and hung it on the back of the bedroom door. I rarely use it, however; the light is terrible, and I can't stand far enough back to really get a decent view because my nightstand is in the way. Oh well.

    1. Yes! We have one on the back of our bathroom door, but there are all kinds of impediments to using it, so this one is perfect. I think I would give up an entire bookcase for our fancy mirror at this point if room became too tight.

  6. Hahaha - a bigger bed means your marriage is in peril. That cracks me up. My parents have slept in a queen size bed their 50+ year entire marriage so maybe you are on to something!

Newest pieces of furniture in our house are my daughter's craft "table" and my husband's music desk. I am sure it has another name; it holds a full size keyboard and his synthesizer and all his music producing toys. Otherwise, I am pretty sure we have had everything since we moved in. Except maybe our red cabinet, which belonged to my husband's grandmother. We inherited it after she died in 2014.

    1. I honestly thought we were done with furniture collecting until all this fell into our laps, but I think we're probably done at this point. When we get new furniture, it will be replacing what we currently have. Our loveseat and couch are starting to look a little gross, so those will probably go next, but it won't be in addition to what we already have.

  7. I have mixed feelings on full length mirrors!!! We have one in our hallway, right outside our bedroom. I use it daily to check shoes/ outfits/ etc. But I always walk past it many, many times a day and a week...and I inevitably look in it every time I walk by. Like Jenny said, this can be a bit of a mind trick. I have actually noticed that when we are on vacation and I do not have constant access to a full length mirror, I feel like I have decreased issues with being tempted to stand and kind of pick apart little things about my body in the mirror... which for some reason sometimes is hard to avoid when looking in a full length mirror all the time, sadly. I wouldn't like to NOT have one, because sometimes you just really need to see how those shoes like with that outfit! Or if something looks frumpy. haha. But I think it can be a double edged sword. I mean, I really don't have major issues with this in general, but I do notice I do less "checking myself out" when the mirror is not available. Ours is hung on the wall, but otherwise maybe I'd drape a throw over it and only use it when I really want to actually use it.

    1. This mirror is out of the way enough that I don't actually check myself out unless I'm going somewhere and want to make sure I look okay (an interview, a social engagement, etc.). I do NOT check it every day, let alone multiple times a day, but if I started to, I think I would cover it and only take it off when I needed to use it.

  8. That's a great anniversary present. I had the same problem when I moved into the hubs's house and just got a cheapo big mirror that hangs on the back of our bedroom door where I can see most of myself. There's a lot of room for improvement there.

Thanks to Doris for asking where Hannah and Zelda sleep because this enquiring mind wanted to know! We have a California king and we need it b/c before the lights go out it's us and the dog at a minimum and sometimes a kid of two stopping by. What can I say, our bedroom gets a lot of traffic.

    1. I think I'd lose my mind if our bedroom was a popular place for other people to hang out! Fortunately, it's not a problme for us.

  9. What a great and thoughtful anniversary present! Well done, Dr. BB! We have 2 full-sized mirrors in our house. Oddly one of them is in the guest room downstairs. The other is on the back of the door to our closet.

I am trying to think about what piece of furniture we added most recently?? I think it's probably Will's crib which we purchased in the spring of 2020. We had hoped he could use Paul's crib but Paul didn't seem to really NEED to move to a bed, so we bought an inexpensive mini crib - the same one we had for Paul.

  11. I think my marriage would be in peril if we were in a full sized bed. We have a king - we like our space!
I love a full-length mirror. I need to get one for our new house. We have mirrored closet doors, which is what I always use.

    1. Everyone always says that a full-size bed is too small, but we're not really large people and it suits us fine. Plus, if we had a king-size bed, there'd be NO ROOM in the rest of our bedroom for anything else!

  12. I really can't remember what the last thing we got was. We ordered a ton of new furnature when we moved in here almost a year ago. But the last thing... Maybe my custom made desk?! Or maybe the coffee table. Which wasn't the best investment...

    1. I want to hear more about how this coffee table was a bad investment!

    2. We had a custom made coffee table we loved but it was too wide for the new apartment. The husband found an exact version just half of it. However, the metal framing is just clicked together leaving gabs that aesthetically bother me and the table top is not fixed having really sharp edges. And the cost was almost as much as the custom made.

    3. Oh, no! That IS a bit of a sad story about the coffee table. :(

  13. It's beautiful! I fully agree that furniture-making is a valuable and commodifiable skill. Just before Covid really hit in 2020, we had ordered a new couch and chair for the family room to replace our couch when we realized it was as old as our son (20) and the four of us couldn't comfortably fit in the family room to watch a movie. They were beautiful, and we were so excited, and when lockdown started we weren't sure we'd ever see them. I think about four months later than the original delivery date they called and said they'd drop them off and we were delirious with joy. The couch is big enough for two of us to lie end to end with space in between, or for like seven people to sit on, and the chair is double sized and puffy. They make the family room feel so much more welcoming and they were such a great purchase.

    1. If I were a young person today, I would insist on learning plumbing and carpentry. THAT is future employment guaranteed! I'm so glad your family room fits your family and lifestyle better now - sounds like the couch was worth the wait!

  14. I would love a full length mirror! My grandfather always said that you need to check yourself in the mirror before you head out the door and he had a full length mirror in the garage so he could look before he got in the car. The only full sized mirror that came with our house is in the back of a closet, so I have to move things to use it and it's really inconvenient. The 11 year old has taken to using the glossy side of the upright piano to look at herself when she wants a full length view. It's sort of hilarious.
I don't know that we've added any furniture in a while. Bunk beds for the kids about a year and a half ago. Oh wait - my husband found a coffee table on the side of the road and is using it for his plants.

    1. A mirror in the garage sounds so decadent and exactly the right spot for one!! Your grandfather was obviously a smart man.

  15. I love that mirror! It's beautiful and what a thoughtful gift from Dr. BB.

Let's see... the last piece of furniture I added to my home was probably my sit/stand desk!

    1. Oh, yes! I am envious of you with your fancy desk. We have three desks and a dining room table where I could work and yet I always end up on the couch! I wonder if I'd use a sit/stand desk more.

  16. I love the bed set and the matching mirror. And it tilts! Bonus!
The last piece of furniture we added to our house was probably a rattan reading chair (which I have maybe used twice to read LOL).... I probably should look at bedframes next, as we don't have one right now. I feel like our bedroom looks like a college dorm room.
