One Month with Hannah

We picked her up on the morning of June 23.  We went through a rescue out of our town that works with rescues and kill shelters in Houston, Texas. Her transport van had just come in that morning and she was tuckered out from traveling.  She excitedly hopped into her kennel in the car and spent most of that first day sleeping while we watched Criminal Minds episodes and talked about how beautiful she was.

She's a shepherd mix of some sort. She's just under fifty pounds.  She has no undercoat, so brushing her is easy and fun and she likes it. She'll sit on command most of the time, even without a treat being offered. She lets us touch each one of her toes, toenails, and teeth.

She's really, really a good dog. She's super sweet, patient with Zelda, rarely barks, and picks up training easily. She's okay on a leash (not awesome, but we'll get there), is a great companion on walks, and loves to chase a tennis ball and roll around on the grass. She's completely led by her nose and will sniff around the middle school for hours. She loves people - she'll lean her whole bodyweight against you and just expect pets and scritches. She's everything I've ever dreamed of in a dog and I'm not exagerrating.

Her issues are mostly related to her GI tract and skin. We've been in almost constant contact with our vet since the third day we had her.  She's had worms, diarrhea, rashes, open sores from stress licking (from before we had her!), and has been on five different medications in the one month we've had her. We had four perfect days with her when her stools were normal and she was just a dog with bad skin!  But mostly she's tired and lethargic because she doesn't feel well.  And damn it, I want her to feel better.

But we're getting there. Soon we'll figure out whatever it is that is bothering her and then she will be The Perfect Dog*.

Welcome to the family, Hannah Banana.  You're going to fit in just fine.

*Perfect for us. Your dog is perfect for you, of course.
