This is the last of miniseries on food. I have been loving the discussions in the comments!
What food did you think you would hate but end up loving?
The first time I had kohlrabi, I did not have high hopes for it. But kohlrabi is good, yo.
What food combo sounds weird but is actually amazing?
You know me and I'll always rep a Midwestern "salad." Consider strawberry pretzel salad or Snickers apple salad. Those things are legitimately delicious, even if they should never be called a salad.
What food should NEVER be eaten together?
Whatever the nastiness is that makes green bean casserole. Gag.
What’s your go-to dish when family or friends come over?
Oh, this is fun! I almost always have fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. I keep frozen dough in the freezer so I can have cookies whenever I want. I also will almost always make popcorn with my Whirley-Pop. There will always be a charcuterie board with cheese, nuts, and jam. If I have any date balls around, I'll pop those on the table. That's all snack-y stuff if I'm hosting book club or something.
If people are coming for dinner, I'll make my regular berry and lettuce salad and then we'll have a frittata or soup or something that can easily be made ahead of time and just heated up when people arrive.
For years I would serve turkey tacos with a Rachel Ray recipe we had, but since we don't cook meat in the house anymore, we've really steered away from tacos and burritos. I'd like to bring Mexican back into our rotation, though.
If you were dating and a potential partner was NOT a foodie, would that be a dealbreaker?
Obviously not. *sigh*
What’s on your food bucket list?
I want a bubble waffle cone again. I could probably make this happen by just going to Milwaukee, but it's not fun to go with my husband, so I need a partner in crime to do this.
But, not really. Since I've been married to my husband, I stopped having food-related aspirations. It's for the best.
Would you consider frozen food as good food? Why or why not?
Frozen fruits and vegetables are just as good as fresh. But after that...I'm a bit of snob.
On a scale of 1-10, how picky of an eater are you?
There are some foods I won't eat - pork, Brussels sprouts, and beets spring to mind. Drinking milk makes me gag. I find a lot of convenience food (think frozen dinners or canned soup) is overwhelmingly salty. I don't love to eat meat, but if I went to dinner at someone's house and something beef or poultry was served to me, I'd eat it. So, I'm not without particularities, but I'm pretty open-minded. 2.5/10 for pickiness? (Edit to add: I asked my husband how he would rate me over breakfast and he said 4/10. I don't know how to answer this.)

This or That?
Doughnuts or muffins? Muffins, but this was a hard call.
Pizza or ramen? Pizza and it's not even close.
Sushi or tacos? Oh. Wow. Tough. Tacos, probably, but if you want to go get sushi, I'll go with you.
Chips or popcorn? Popcorn, but I'm not a food snob. I'll take either.
Ice cream or cake? Ice cream.
Coffee or tea? Coffee, but I am a daily tea drinker who only gets coffee as an occasional treat.
Wine or beer? Neither.
Breakfast or dinner? Breakfast.
McDonald’s or Wendy’s? Wendy's.
Sweet or savory? Sweet.
Crunchy or chewy? Crunchy.
Sparkling or flat water? Sparkling.

What's your go-to dish when people come over? Are you picky? McDonald's or Wendy's?
Keeping cookie dough in the freezer is such a good idea. I can't do it, as we'd eat the frozen delight and never get cookies out of it.
ReplyDeleteI'm very picky- 9/10 so I generally never eat out. I never would have dated a foodie- misery for both of us would follow.
Doughnuts, pizza, neither, popcorn ( my dinner from the concession stand with kids sports), ice cream, black tea though only in winter or when I'm sick, neither, breakfast, McDonalds ( diet coke and fries, Wendy's has the nasty fountain drink computer which never gets diet coke right), sweet by a mile, chewy, tap water.
In the rare event people eat at my house, it's a cook out or taco bar.
In sushi or tacos you pick neither, but you have a taco bar as your go-to!?!? You are a complicated person.
DeleteOH!! You know what? I love the nasty fountain drink computer because it's one of the very few places I can get Caffeine Free Diet Cherry Coke. Imagine wanting your pop to be that specific. It's (obviously) not sold in stores.
Let's Go!
ReplyDeleteDoughnuts vs muffins is a hard call. I'm going muffins.
C'mon dub it's pizza
Tacos! But I like sushi too
Chips!!!
Cake
Coffee4Life!
Another tough choice. I'm going beer
Dinner!
McD!
Sweet
Crunchy
Flat!!!
I've gotten out of the habit of keeping cookie dough in the freezer, but it's a wise life decision. I really like setting up a taco bar when people come over.
I'm situationally picky. If it's just me, then I like things to be just so. But if someone else is cooking then I'm going to be cleaning my plate no matter what.
Yeah, if someone else is cooking, it's going to taste 100% better than when I cook it, so I will definitely be eating every crumb. I agree with this wholeheartedly.
DeleteI don't think I'm particularly picky, but I am a plant-based gal, so that can be a thing. I'm generally delighted if someone makes a vegetarian dish for me. I don't have a go-to dish when people come over because it depends on the people. I do love having people over for dinner though. I would also choose popcorn over chips, but only by a slight margin because I love both so very much. I am definitely a salty gal, rather than sweet, but I'll never turn down cake. I could take or leave muffins and doughnuts, I don't really care for either, but if there was nothing else I'd eat them. Wine over beer, coffee over tea, and I like flat and sparkling water.
ReplyDeleteYes, having some dietary restrictions can make it seem as if you are picky even when you'll eat anything that isn't part of the restriction! If I'm honest, I wouldn't turn down any of the food - give me your doughnuts, muffins, cakes, chips, popcorn, sushi, tacos. Give it all to me. I will eat it and be thankful!
DeleteThis is a fun series. I don’t like Wendy’s or McDonalds. I’m not picky but I am a vegetarian so that limits some of my choices. Definitely muffins over donuts and savory before sweet. My go to for having people over is a taco bar. Generally well liked and easy to adapt for dietary needs or preferences.
ReplyDeleteOh, baked potato, Cesar side salad, and Frosty at Wendy's is THE BEST vegetarian fast food meal that exists. I didn't realize taco bars were so popular for having people over. They're so versatile, I guess. But now I sort of want to do a baked potato bar!
DeleteCould you do meatless Mexican with beans? Our simplest Taco Tuesdays is a can of black beans simmered with garlic and cumin and then all the toppings. I also make tofu "ground beef", but it has soy sauce in it, which might not be Mr. BB friendly, I don't think? (This is the recipe we use: https://cookeatlivelove.com/making-a-tofu-ground-beef-substitute/)
ReplyDeleteI used to love McDonald's, especially an Egg McMuffin and Hashbrowns, but it's gotten SO EXPENSIVE lately that it's really not worth the money or the calories. But their fries.... A few weeks ago, we had a show set in McDonald's and the prop person had to supply two full McDonald's meals (cheese burgers, quarter pounders, fries, apple pies...) I got to take home the leftovers and let me tell you I did enjoy it - kind of in an illicit, but the food is free! kind of way.
When people come over, I often will either grill or do a big pot of Marcella Hazan's easy tomato sauce with pasta. It's stupid good for how easy it is to make. Often, I'll make meatballs on the side for folks who eat meat.
Is a bubble waffle cone made out of mochi flour? I've never had one before, but there's a place (actually several) near here that make bubble donuts that are made from rice/mochi flour, and I really enjoy those.
So much in this comment, Diane!
Delete1) Beans are okay, but my husband burns out on them really quickly. Like if I serve black bean enchiladas for dinner today, he'll not want black beans again until August.
2) Tofu is tough because it's soy-based. My husband can have *some* soy, but has to be very careful with it.
3) McD's fries are the GOAT. I agree with this. But everything else is better at Wendy's. I have heard McD's brought back the fried apple pies, so I'm wondering if that might be a game changer for me.
4) I wish we could do pasta. I just feel like that should be everyone's "I need dinner on the table in 20 minutes" meal.
5) I don't know what bubble waffle cones are made of to be honest. A quick google shows it's just all-purpose flour. I got briefly excited because rice flour IS gluten free. Oh, well.
Our go to dish depends on who is coming over and the season. If it's summer, we are probably grilling burgers and/or brats and have some sides. If it's winter, it's probably tacos. If it's the winter and someone is a vegetarian, I would make a vegetarian soup/chili type of dish. That said, I will outsource and get take out depending on my stress levels/whether I've traveled recently, and usually that take out will be Indian or pizza.
ReplyDeleteI would say I am not picky by choice, but since I have a gluten intolerance, I am picky for reasons that are out of my hands. I don't like being accommodated so would rather bring my own dish. But outside of things I can't eat due to being GF, there is a very short list of foods I won't eat, like anchovies and sardines are 2 things that come to mind.
If I had to choose, I'd choose Wendy's over McD's because I could get a baked potato and a frosty, I guess? But my choice would probably be neither!
We should grill out. I bet we could have fun with that. Bake some potatoes, throw some veggies on the grill. Maybe a portabella burger? I really should throw it out there as an option. I also want to start trying some GF frozen pizzas because I want Fridays to be pizza nights. I HATE having to cook on Fridays. I'll happily put together a salad or something if we can just have pizza.
DeleteOh, I like anchovies in the right place. I don't know if I've ever had sardines, but people suggest them as a good alternative to tuna if people are worried about mercury levels. I use Safe Catch tuna, but I do eat like two cans a week, so I'm *vaguely* worried about mercury and sometimes wonder if I should switch to sardines.
YES!! A baked potato, a Frosty, and a side Caesar salad at Wendy's is my favorite fast food meal.
Grilled veggies are so good! We have this handy grill basket thing that I use to grill peppers and onions. Grilled portobellos would be good, too! And there can be good veggie burger recipes but it takes some trial and error. But a baked potato and a bunch of veggies would be a great meal IMO!
DeleteMy family eats sardines as part of an appetizer course on Christmas Eve and they creep me out. I eat a good amount of tuna too. But I just sort of shrug it off and hope it’s not too much mercy. Surely something else will kill me first!!
Can I admit that seeing the question about a go-to gave me some anxiety. I NEED THIS and don't currently have it. In other seasons of life I did: chicken noodle soup, a chicken curry... but everyone in my family is over those and I need to reinvent myself. Mostly, right now, I am just feeling so grumpy about the fact people still need to eat three times a day. We're eating a lot of toast during our re-entry.
ReplyDeleteWendy's for the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger. Though McDonald's fries are better.
Doughnuts or muffins? Can't decide. Neither are things I eat often. Probably a really good sugar coated old-fashioned doughnut.
Pizza or ramen? Ooohh. Tough. Probably ramen.
Sushi or tacos? NOT HARD. Sushi.
Chips or popcorn? Chips.
Ice cream or cake? Depends on the kind of each. Probably cake.
Coffee or tea? Coffee. Ideally at Christmas time sitting in front of my tree and sweetened with a splash of Peppermint Mocha Silk Creamer.
Wine or beer? Neither. GROSS to both.
Breakfast or dinner? Breakfast (I love it at dinner time, too).
McDonald’s or Wendy’s? Wendy's.
Sweet or savory? Sweet.
Crunchy or chewy? Crunchy.
Sparkling or flat water? Both. I just love water. Probably flat would win on the whole because it's free...
I mean, if people are coming over, I'm making a go-to even if my family had it last night. I AM HERE TO ENTERTAIN MY GUESTS, NOT MY FAMILY. Ha. Now you know my life priorities.
DeleteI didn't even think to ask about ingredients in coffee/tea. I just get one cream or milk in my coffee and WOE to anyone who puts something other than honey in my tea. Hm. I do have strong opinions on this and didn't realize it until just now. Maybe I am a picky eater!
Speaking of food, I did purchase chips today, but still not All Dressed, perhaps because I didn’t see them in the shelves where I was picking. I tell myself that I am using them to celebrate Canada Day tomorrow. I haven’t indulged in chip truck fries for quite awhile, so I may do that sometime too. Can we talk about chocolate now? :)
ReplyDeleteOooh, food. I'm going to answer some of your questions at the end. BEER. TEA. TACOS. ANYTHING SALTY AND CRUNCHY. Sparkling water- yum. Let's see- I acn't remember the last time anyone came over to our house for a meal. The few times it's happened in recent years, I made curry (mango curry with tofu). Oh, I just read your response to Diane. You know they make tofu out of other things besides soy, but I'm not sure it's really worth it. I think it's kind of expensive.
ReplyDeleteGo to meal when people come over? Whatever The Husband feels like making. Most likely, I will make whatever dessert I feel like making or if I know their favorite, I'll make that.
ReplyDeleteAm I picky? I'd like to think that I'm not...but I really am.
McDonald's or Wendy's? MacDonald's for a diet Coke wins hands down every time. They also win in the fries department. But I do like a Wendy's hamburger over most of the McDonald's hamburgers. I mean the Big Mac is good but that is something I would only order rarely - like almost never.
