Happy Birthday to Nance!!

Today is Nance's birthday! Let's all head over there and wish her a happy, happy birthday.

Nance is from the same area where my Bestest Friend is from, used to teach English in high school, and one of my favorite things on the internet is her comment section. In a recent post, we went from a comment in which I was complaining about signs targeted at dog owners to discussing the ambiguities of the English language. Where else can you get such value in 2026? Only at the Department.

Available at Bike Parts on Etsy.

Because of Nance's influence, I try to bring up Moby-Dick once a month or so. Notice how Moby Dick isn't hyphenated in the above graphic? THEY DON'T KNOW THE RULE ABOUT THE HYPHEN. Nance knows.

Everyone go wish Nance a happy birthday! She's had a rough year and I just know this next year is going to be amazing.

  2. Happy Birthday to Nance! I always remember it because she and my Ted have the same birthday. I’m thankful for Nance’s friendship, she has been my blog friend since 2006 or so, and I can say that we met in real life, went to a botanical garden, had a lovely lunch at Ocean Beach, and toured an adult film studio, kink.com. Her friend / ex-student, who was (if I remember correctly) also a friend of one of her sons, lived in SF and was hoping to shock her. Nance, being Nance, was completely unflappable.

  5. Nance is a gem! She shared a bday with my fave SIL so clearly the best kind of people are born on May 3rd! My MIL is also a retired English teacher - she’s an excellent editor and someone I consult with grammar questions.

  9. Here's the crazy thing. I see Nance's name in people's comment sections, but I DON'T READ HER BLOG. WHY??? It makes no sense, because I just went over there and read a couple posts, which were hilarious (the inflatable Jesus... hee hee!) Anyway, this nonsense must stop- I will be reading her blog from now on.
