What I Spent: March 2026

As a reminder, my husband pays the "big bills" like mortgage, phone, car, and electricity. I pay for groceries and the pets and that somehow evens things out. However, at some point last month, my credit card was used by somebody that wasn't me and they cancelled my card and I had to get a new on and that meant I couldn't pay for the big Costco trip. What that means is that the groceries this month look miniscule, but that's because my husband paid for a big chunk. Muhahahaha.

Entertainment ($13.70, <1%) - Spotify membership.

Fitness ($15, <1%) - One fitness class.

Eating out ($30.79, 2%) - I got coffee once and had dinner out with friends when I was in Michigan.

Cars ($31.63, 2%) - I filled up one car with gas once.

Personal care ($80, 5%) - Face lotion and a hair cut.

Gifts ($85, 5%) - Some birthday gifts and greeting cards.

Savings ($200, 12%) - I tried a system earlier in the year to increase this and it worked for exactly one month.

Bills ($300, 18%) - Water/sewer, home and car insurance

Pets ($420, 25%) - Food for both, litter for the cat, probiotics for the dog. and I had to buy a card for Hannah's baths. Hannah's probiotics are literally like $2/day, so they add up!

Groceries ($490, 30%) - We spent almost this at Costco last month, though, and Dr. BB paid for that.

April's going to be a bit different, though, because I'm going on a trip with Bestest Friend, so the entertainment number will be much higher! And groceries will definitely increase. I'm not mad about that, though! What's the last thing you bought?

  1. Yay for bestest friend trip! Boo to getting your card hacked but that's life and at least it brought the grocery bill down this month.

My last buy? Lodging for my next trip! I'm spending this week at home and then I'm getting back out on the road.

    1. Ha! Well, my husband did have to pay, so the money will come out of the household budget one way or another.

Woot! Another trip! You're quite the traveler!

  2. Ooooh bestest friend trip! I am so excited for you! Last thing I bought...probably groceries? I haven't had a spendy week, but I am going to Costco this week so that will change.

    1. I went to Costco on Saturday. It was brutal. Oh, well. We gotta eat.

  3. A bestest friend trip sounds delightful! Having your credit card hacked is not delightful, but nice that it was caught and canceled. The last thing I bought was groceries, and I spent almost $70.

    1. We went for a "little trip" to the grocery store last night and it was $70! Everything is so expensive. Sheesh.

    1. I'd be drinking out of the sink at the price! Wowza.

  5. I am continually outraged at the cost of our groceries. How can tomatoes be this expensive? Why did pasta suddenly jump 35%? And cucumbers! What are they, rare now?

The last thing I bought was groceries, but I included some Matchbox cars and a whole set of little construction vehicles for Theo, so it wasn't entirely boring and hellacious.

    1. I imagine Theo has quite a collection of fun things to play with at your house.

  6. A "Guide to Arizona Cacti" book. If that sounds random, it is! Part of a "Phoenix Survival Kit" I'm putting together for my son, who is moving out there next month.

    1. I hope you're including some hats and sunscreen. I can't imagine living somewhere with so much sun!

  7. Excellent silver lining to having your credit card stolen, getting out of paying for groceries. I went to Staples and bought myself some pens and notepaper on Friday, and I also mailed a couple of things at the post office. Plus I bought bananas at the grocery store, and carbonation for our SodaStream. Friday was a spendy day I guess. Today will be the grocery store, which will be expensive because everything costs more in California. I generally ignore filling the gas tank and leave that to my husband, because he drives more than I do. I think the cheap place is $5.65 a gallon right now.

    1. It seems that my husband fills up the gas tank a lot more often than I do, too. I think he drives more, but also I tend to get nervous if it's below half a tank, so when I do fill it up, it's less than he who allows the gas light to come on! That is a lot of money per gallon!

  8. The last thing I spent money on was gas. Normally, I can fill up my tank for $35 or less, but this time, it was $54! I'm so glad I don't have to drive a lot. I can't imagine how people with families or who work outside the home are doing it!

    1. Right? Our commute is not a big deal, but we're still spending $40-50 a week in gas for the pleasure of going into the office. I don't know how hourly workers are getting by.

  9. Nice job of getting out of grocery buying! Jk, I'm sure that was a huge pain. Let's see, the last thing I bought... I guess it was some candy and other snacks for Easter baskets! Have I really not been shopping since Saturday? I guess not.

    1. I mean Saturday - Tuesday doesn't seem that long of a time to me. Are you normally getting groceries more often than that?

  10. I'm excited for you - the upcoming trip with bestest friend sounds amazing. The 'bestest friend' travel bit alone is a positive. My mastercard has a suspicious purchase for like 29 bucks and while I was in Florida, they wanted me to order a new card - but we were on vacation and I needed my card. Now that I'm home, I need to fill up the cars with gas and get a new card. Such.a.pain.

The last thing I spent money on was thank you notes for the girls to write their thank yous for the gifts they received when they received their sacraments. Lots and lots of cross or saint necklaces. ;)

    1. I did think about what would have happened if that fraud alert had happened when I was out of town! It's so inconvenient! But maybe I shouldn't rely on cards so much? I don't know. It seems insane to have that much cash in hand.

  11. Oooh, a trip with your best friend! I am excited to hear where you are going! I love girls trips!

The last thing I bought was some asparagus at Aldi on Friday. Phil had got some earlier in the week but when I went to cook it, it was all slimy. :( So I had to buy another bunch. That is a lame purchase so a more fun purchase earlier that day was lunch at a Mexican Mercado place in Minneapolis. Phil and I went on Good Friday for a lunch date since we both had the day off work. It was much busier than the last time I was in there when my friend was visiting in Minneapolis so I am hoping that the businesses are bouncing back. They were really struggling during the ICE surge. :(

    1. She'll be at my house for one night and then we'll go to Chicago. It's going to be fun!

I'm so proud of Minneapolis for chasing ICE out. It really says such good things about the city. I do hope all the businesses will be able to rebound.

  12. I'm impressed that your entertainment category is so low, but also happy that it will increase for a fun reason this month! Have a great time with your friend!!

  13. Yay Bestest Friend trip! The last thing I bought is quite random: I had to get a bundle of canes to replace the ones my daughter accidentally keeps bringing home from the dance studio. I also bought a new harness for our pup, Maysie. (Yet another, but working so far!)
