A Couple of Days in Chicago

As you know, I spent a couple of days with Bestest Friend in Chicago.

We ate food.

We drank beverages that we paid way too much for.

We went to a museum.

But, I think we can all agree that the most important thing I did was get my nose pierced. I've wanted to do it for years, but there's no time like the present, right?

We spent a lot of time on the bus. Fortunately the weather during the day was perfect. It was not so perfect at night, but who cares? We were tucked away in our Air BnB.

If you've been to Chicago, what's your favorite thing to do there? If you've never been, what would you like to see or do there?

  1. Oooh I would love to see a selfie! I'm so excited for your nose ring. What kind of ring did you get? I will just be over here dying of anticipation.
I have been to Chicago, but it was a work trip. I was with colleagues, one of whom - Warren - lived in Chicago for several years. He gave me the history of the city in detail, every chance he got. IN DETAIL. I don't actually remember a lot of what he said, except that any time there was a conversation he would be like "Well, the first Mayor Daly..." and then there would be this very long explanation about...I don't know what? The trains? I have no idea. It is lost to the sands of time. What I do remember in detail was that Warren suggested we (me, him, and our male boss) go to a tapas bar for dinner and I thought he said TOPLESS bar, hilarity ensued.

    1. Chicago natives are INTENSE. Chicago politics are/were crazy, but somehow Chicago keeps ticking along. I wonder if that's what Warren was going on and on about. It's probably what I would do. Ha!

It's just a silver stud in my nose. I don't think I'll ever do a hoop. It's fun! If I get a flattering photo, I'll post it.

  3. Sounds like you had a great time! I want a photo of this new piercing!
One of my favorite things I did in Chicago was an architectural river cruise. I've also done an architecture walking tour and that was fun too.

    1. Oh, man, I did that architectural river cruise once. It was long and boring. Ha! I am not a lady who likes a tour guide. It's either a self-directed tour or bust for me.

  4. I did the same cruise as Jenny did, and I loved it. The weather was delightful and I really like learning new things that are outside my usual interests.

I did a ton of walking, and I shopped a few stores on the Magnificent Mile. Once, with the family, we took in a Cubs game because my oldest was a huge Cubs fan when he was little. We also had a great time at Goose Island Brewery.

It sounds as if you had a terrific time with your friend. Were you planning to get the nose piercing, or was it a spur of the moment decision? Did your friend get a piercing, too?

    1. I was sort of sad we didn't have time for the Magnificent Mile, but I've heard it hasn't really ever recovered from the pandemic, so maybe it's better that we didn't go?

I had been wanting a nose piercing for quite some time, so I asked her to make it a priority on our itinerary. She didn't get one, but her son was with us and he did get an ear pierced. It's tough to do the timing right with a piercing because I want to make sure I can do all the hygiene things as it heals, so I wanted to do it when you didn't have any possibility of pool/hot tub action for a few months. This was the perfect time!

What a fun weekend! And you got your nose pierced!!!! That is awesome and I can't wait to see it. I am also interested to hear about the piercing itself and the adjustment to having nose jewelry.

    1. The piercing was no big deal. He had me breathe in, breath out, and as I was breathing in, he did it. It was a sharp pain for a fraction of a second and then it was fine. It's a bit tender, but I actually rarely accidentally touch my nose, so it has mostly been fine. The weirdest thing is blowing my nose because I have to be pretty careful not to touch it!

  6. I also love the architectural cruise! I've done it 3 times - once with friends during marathon weekend, a more abbreviated one with Taco last summer when we did a mom/son trip, and then the 3rd time was as part of the team outing before our disastrous dinner at Navy Pier. How I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to ditch the dinner and go to my hotel room. I would have saved myself a lot of pain and misery...

Another thing I loved to do in Chicago is go to the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a guided tour but its so well done! I've done it twice!

  7. So many family members asked if we'd been to Chicago yet. Other than driving through or flying out of O'Hare, nope! But it's on our bucket list, and hopefully we can make it happen this summer. Glad you had a great time, even if the beverages were spendy. Sometimes, you've just gotta splurge!

  8. Yes please to everything except the nose piercing, and now I know if I ever make it to Chicago, I should do that architectural river tour! I’ve never been on an architectural tour. You know, I’ll bet they have a bunch of them in San Francisco, I should give one a try and see what I think. Though there won’t be any rivers involved, sadly. Your breakfast looks YUMMY, and I do enjoy an overpriced drink once in a while. I LOVE a good museum, so if I were to go to Chicago, I would want to eat, drink, walk, and see art and architecture. No interest in sports, so that would be off the table.

  9. Hooray for a wonderful visit to Chicago with bestest friend. My fav thing to do in Chicago is go to the beach in the summer followed by a casual dinner. In colder temps, I enjoy a play. We did a staycation in the city with the kids when I was pregnant with Curly. So fun. We’ve done the museums and Navy Pier but have never done the architecture tiur
