What I Spent: January 2026

I waffled about whether or not to continue doing these posts, but I find them useful, so they're back!

As a reminder, my husband pays the "big bills" like mortgage, phone, car, and electricity. I pay for groceries and the pets and that somehow evens things out.

Eating out ($5.05, <1%) - I bought myself an americano on a day when I really needed a lift for being a grown up.

Entertainment ($12.95, <1%) - Spotify subscription.

Gifts ($42, 1.7%) - Birthday present for my niece and some greeting cards.

Donations ($50, 2%) - To the scholarship fund at my alma mater.

Travel ($120, 4.7%) - Friends, I renewed my passport. I thought it was going to take ages, but I was able to submit my photo online (we took it in our bathroom with me standing in our bathtub) and do all the paperwork online and I got it in the mail within three weeks. Since I'd been putting this off for months, this was a real win and took less than an hour all told.

Personal care ($224.93, 8.9%) - Haircut, stocked up on supplements, and I had to buy new face wash and face lotion.

Bills ($281.51, 11.1%) - Insurance for the house and car, as well as water/sewer.

Savings ($350, 13.8%) - This would have been more, except for...

Pets ($598.93, 23.6%) - Hannah had the vet appointment to get her bumps looked at and then I had to buy her fancyschmancy boots. As I'm typing this, the boots haven't even shipped yet and the daytime temps have climbed back into the 20s, so that was probably a waste.

Groceries ($848.78, 33.5%) - This is higher than usual, but it's because I took dinner over to a friend with cancer a couple of times and it's expensive to make a nice meal for four people. I definitely fed them better than I would feed us.

Did you buy coffee last month? Do you think it's crazy that I did?

  1. Yes I bought a Starbucks drink last month, which is very out of the ordinary for me. I kept seeing signs for Pistachio cold brew, and I knew that it would be my jam so I treated myself at the airport in New Orleans. I approve of giving yourself a lift for being a grown up.

Booyah on the savings! I came in at $400 for one pet - $300 for her annual checkup and shots and $100 in dog treats and toys for the shelter which we visited for her annual gotcha visit/dog license renewal. I guess you could say the treats and toys were a charitable donation, but it's a charitable donation that I would not have thought to make if we didn't have her.

    1. Man, dogs are expensive. It's a good thing they're cute and bring lots to our lives because they are definitely not a sound financial investment! That's a good reminder to me that I should see what the rescue who took of Hannah has on its wishlist!

  2. It’s CRAZY that you bought yourself a coffee Engie, how could you be so frivolous??? ;-)

I’m pretty sure I bought myself a coffee last month. And then another day I bought a coffee for a guy on the street, probably homeless. I had met up with Allison in SF, and was on my way to get the train home, and wishing I had some water. There was a guy asking for money in front of Starbucks, and I had $2 in my pocket (not my wallet - I don’t really like taking out my wallet on the street), so I gave it to him. He leaned in, conspiratorially, and said, ‘What I’d really like is a caramel frappacino’. HOW COULD I SAY NO? I could not. So I went inside, and in addition to his drink, I got myself a big old glass of water. We were both made so happy by the whole thing. I guess that counts as a gift?

    1. I am the most frivolous!! It was nice of you to buy that man a fancy drink. I'm sure it was the best thing that happened to him all day.

  3. I think it's astonishing that you only spent $5 on coffee!!!
I had no idea it's so easy to renew a passport- I'm going to see if I can do it online.
Don't worry- you'll have more cold weather! Not to be too pessimistic, of course. Maybe not this year, but next winter. Hannah's boots will be used.

    1. You can only renew online if your passport expired in the last five years. Mine expired last August and I just kept putting it off, but it wasn't too bad.

Yeah, we did the math and I'm pretty sure that it was not a wise choice, but if Hannah lives for another twenty years, maybe it will work out to dollars per wear. LOL. Oh, well. She deserves to have safe feet while she's here.

  4. I usually buy a coffee from Dunkin' on my way to work every Wednesday. It's a nice treat for having to drive 45 minutes into Madison twice a week (I'm really fortunate it isn't more often).

    1. Dunkin' is my coffee place of choice, too. I almost always stop at the one on the way out of town when I head to Madison.

  5. I don't think it's crazy at all that you bought yourself that coffee! I am a big believer in rewards for Doing The Things when I really don't want to Do The Things.

    1. Right? I have tried to wean myself off food and drink as rewards, but sometimes I just want a coffee treat when I've had a medical appointment.

  6. I think if that coffee made you feel better, then it was worth it. As my late friend used to say, "It's not like you bought a $10, 000.00 diamond necklace." Gosh, I miss her.

    1. Well, if I could afford a 10K necklace, that would be a great treat, too.

  7. I buy coffee every week. It's something that really boosts my mood and I savor every sip. When I am traveling for work, I get one every dang day and get an extra shot of espresso since I'm not paying for it. You should not feel guilty about buying coffee!

    1. When I traveled for work, I drank so much Starbucks. LOL. It's definitely something that makes traveling better, right?!

  8. I think it's lovely that you treated yourself to coffee. What a kind thing to do for yourself for being an adult. Sometimes being an adult sucks.

  9. Coffee is my guilty pleasure and a nice way to get to chat with the grad students in the lab as the go on a coffee run almost every day (I don't go every day, but from one's in a while). I am always amazed how often the " kids" eat out these days.
