Seventeen!

We picked the Saturday of Memorial Day for our wedding not because it was a holiday weekend, but because it was the only weekend in a three month window in which both the venue we wanted was available and we didn't have other commitments. When Dr. BB told his oldest brother the date, his brother said (and this is a direct quote) "It's a holiday weekend - I'm not sure I'll be able to make it."

A few weeks ago, we got an invitation in the mail to my oldest niece's (the daughter of this same brother) graduation party on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, we sort of laughed and the first thing my husband said was, "well, it's a holiday weekend - I wonder if we'll be able to make it."

Here's the annual photo, friends! It was too cold for me to be wearing that dress, in truth, but I refused to wear pants. Or real shoes. The ground we are standing on is filled with goose shit, directly to the left of us is an outhouse, and in front of us is the pavilion where the graduation party was happening. But I made my sister-in-law take a bunch of photos of us anyway. Even though we all probably will end up with E. coli infections.

The traditional gift for 17 years is furniture and the description was something about being sturdy and dependable and I nearly cried. Why can't the traditional gift be something like a musical instrument (happy!) or silk (sexy!) or a dog? The modern gift is shells and while we tried desperately to fill up at a Shell station, we just didn't run into one.

If anyone's asking, you should know that we had a fun day listening to Counting Crows, worrying about the dog's stool (seriously, don't get a pet unless you want to talk about poop all day long), and thinking about how very little my niece was when we got married and now SHE CAN VOTE.

Here's to seventeen more years.

For my fellow Americans, how are you spending your long weekend? For my non-American friends, are you doing anything fun on this lovely Monday?

    1. Our long weekend is Victoria Day, which seems to occur about a week before yours, We also got married on the Saturday, 56 years ago.

  3. Happy Anniversary. I love your annual photo tradition and great outfits. I was none-the-wise about the goose turd, but somehow that seems romantic in its own way. True love prevails, even when surrounded by (and, in your case, conversation is consumed by) faeces!
We are coming up to our 16th anniversary this summer. I cannot believe how quickly time has flown.
    Enjoy the long weekend.
We had LAST Monday off (Victoria Day) so today is just a regular Monday in Canada. And yes, it is STILL raining.

    1. It is raining again today. *sigh* It's cold AND raining and I'm ready to move to Florida. (JK - I'm a Midwest lady).

  4. Happy anniversary! Lol on the brother's commentary. My older brother got married on December 30 and let me tell you, that was a choice. I'd take a May long weekend wedding any day.
Great photo of the two of you, no one can tell at all that you are standing in goose shit!
Those traditional gift things are kind of wild. Furniture! I had no idea. We just had our 23rd and I looked it up - the gift was air. Well, done and done. Next year is stone, so I guess I'll just have to remember to grab a rock.

    1. I think that week between Christmas and New Year's is actually smart. A lot of people in my circles have it off. Did you not care for that choice?

AIR! AIR! WTF? I can't with these traditional gifts.

  6. Happy Anni! I can confirm that if you have a dog and a significant other, good poop = a good day, and bad poop = lots of discussion.

  7. Happy Anniversary! Boy your BIL’s comment is coming back to haunt him a bit. We didn’t have any grad parties this weekend but were invited to one every weekend in June. I am writing checks right and left for their cards. We can only make it to one of the parties, though.

Parents of young children also talk so much about poop - how often, the consistency/color/etc. It’s wild.

We have had a quiet holiday weekend. My MIL’s bday was on Saturday so she is coming over today for a birthday dinner. We always stay home Memorial Day weekend since her bday always falls around the holiday. The weather has been much better than usual with lots of sunshine - finally!!

  8. Aw! That picture is beautiful- happy anniversary! Yes, here's to 17 more years. To answer your question, I'm going to work today. SIGH. That's okay- my husband is off today so I told him he's in charge of dinner, muahahahaha!

  9. Happy anniversary! Given that it's Memorial Day weekend, at least it's doubtful either of you will ever forget.

My plan is to not do much of anything today, but the yard always beckons. Sausages on the grill this evening, that much is certain.

    1. Yeah, we ended up doing a lot of yard work. I hate it because we'll just have to do it AGAIN next week. *sigh* At least this week we could get to the compost because we were both off on Tuesday.

  12. Happy Anniversary! I hope you keep having them until your niece is old enough to qualify for Medicare.

Our family just left the lake house. Rick is snoring in the chair and I'm trying to recover from having an extra 5 people in residence, all of whom like it way colder than I do. Boat rides are significantly less pleasant if you have to bundle up AND cover up in a blanket--take it from me.

But I loved every moment of it and Theo had the time of his life.

  13. Happy Anniversary! One would never know about the goose shit and outhouse had you not told us. Thank you for keeping it real.

We bought a new bed for the furniture year, but we went with the modern list so it was 29. We really needed a new bed (our mattresses were on the floor, which is stupid, though Mulder liked being able to put his face right there and say hello in the morning, so the new bed was probably a mistake in his mind.)

We got married on July 3rd, so while we do not always have the day off, we always have the day after off, which is nice. And yeah, of course we always take our anniversary off. :)

    1. July 3! Did you get any pushback about the holiday weekend? I'm just trying to figure out if it was weird that his family thought it was weird or if it is weird. That's a lot of weirds.

  15. Happy anniversary. Anyone knows a good couple photo is worth a little e.coli.
I had a lovely day at work and a back deck hang in the sun with Lucy and my parents.
The furniture thing makes me think of the song I Love You Like a Table from Waitress, which I love.

    1. Right? I'll risk the e.coli if I can get a photo for the Christmas card.

I Love You Like a Table!!! Ha!

  16. Happy anniversary! You two look so sweet together, and no one would know you were standing in goose poop next to an outhouse! We have our 32nd anniversary coming up. Time flies when you're having fun!

    1. 32! The traditional 32nd Anniversary gift is bronze, an alloy of copper and tin that is stronger together than the two metals separately. That's actually really sweet.

  17. Happy anniversary! It's amazing how time flies by. I didn't know about furniture for your 17th. I like furniture, of course, but something a bit more meaningful would be better. Like ruby for 40th or sapphire for 45th. A goal for us all!

    1. We don't need any furniture, so it was sort of a dud year. My husband was talking to his brother who just celebrated his 20th anniversary and he got a very $$$ watch. I laughed and told my husband he was not getting that for 20.

  18. Happy anniversary! I'm glad you can both laugh (now, anyway) about that comment, because whoa. I enjoyed a lazy weekend, as having that extra day off makes so much difference. I should take three-day weekends more often.

    1. We do laugh about it now because it's sort of funny. *shrug* I also took off Tuesday, so I had a four-day weekend and I'm paying for it now at work, but I loved it! 100% recommend.

  19. Happiest of anniversaries. You look happy inspite catching an e.coli infection. (That made me laugh!).

Holiday weekends are big for folks get married around here. Is that not a thing in the US? No one needs to tae any time off. Its a win win. And you will always have a day of on your actual wedding date.

Anyways here is to another 17 years – at least.

    1. Thank you!

People do get married on holidays, but it is a bit controversial. Some people like it (three day weekends! no time off!), but some people have regular things they do on holidays and don't like it. We didn't do it purposefully, really, but that's how it worked out!
